A bunch of intellects rivaled only by garden tools!

Tuesday 26th November 2019

Written by Esther

It is the last task in November and it turns out to be surprisingly warm evening as we gathering in the back yard at Daveena's.

This weeks planned run had some last minute changes as I was unable to park at the task as planned, so it was a new place to complete the fitness session and a last minute car move.

It was great to have 3 new faces with us tonight - Chris, Ian and Becky who was yet another friend of Nicola, our internal recruiter! Chris and Ian came along with a link to Bournemouth Goodgym with a twin brother over there as a regular.

Thanks to Andrea and Sarah for being back markers tonight!

Onto the fitness session first and a short run to a small close off Sandbanks Road. This was a spot picked to work on threshold pace for some short (approx 30 sec) intervals. The groups quickly divided into two (not sure if one group noticed they did an extra lap!) with the aim to get a pace that starts to feel 'uncomfortable' to try and hit that threshold. This enables a real improvement in fitness, even if just short distances! Finished with a approx 90 sec interval down the road, it was onto the task!

We visited this task two weeks ago to start clearance around the back of building, this week it was to work on the front bushes and trees. Richard was very soon in his element and found chopping down the biggest trees he could find and often found deep in a bush! Meanwhile Tim was found quietly cutting back a tree by the window on the other side of the car park.

Nicola was a runner with a story tonight as she had run with the amazing and inspiring Anna McNuff who has been completing marathons barefoot all over the UK (check out her story at www.annamcnuff.com). Thanks to heads up to Nikki also for the book being free on kindle currently so go and download it if you haven't already!

Congratulations to Patricia who completed her 10th Good Deed and this morning has already become one of the task force! Also it was deed number 10 for Sarah who quietly sneaked that one in!

Plenty of laughs tonight, not all of which are printable but Sian you did a great job of cutting and pulling!

Lovely to have the ever wonderful company of Ali, Jane and Hilary for bringing in the Irish!

It was a great task to really hack back and see the difference just 30 minutes makes, it was hard to tear away a few of the runners, but we will be back again in the new year before they move in. Lewis-Manning will be doing a lot of internal work in the new year as they have a new day service that will be operating from there.

There was no task owner there tonight was we already knew what we were doing and just needed the car full of tools to do it so today I will let Lewis-Manning know of the progress we have made!

Only 3 runs left for 2019! Next week I need your best singing voices, chatting lines and social sides as we go off to something very different!

Ps: My Photography skills are still needing work with the headtorches and flashes making it tricky!

Moonlighting as undercover gardeners

Tuesday 12th November 2019

Written by Esther

Fact of the day for you! (Thanks Hilary)

Tonights moon is called a beaver moon, the first in November. The time of the Beaver Moon was the time for both the colonists and the Algonquin tribes to set beaver traps to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. This full moon is also known as the Frost Moon because it's about the time of the first frosts.

It was a lovely moon too, dipping in and out of the low cloud cover through the evening giving an eerie feeling! It was a lucky 13 of us that met in the cafe ready to go!

It was even more dark than expected in the park as we made some attempts to play bulldog in the road, interupted by more than one car, no doubt locking their doors as they passed us running around, chasing each other wearing lights!

Onto a local cul-de-sac which quiet, large family homes who were also probably locking thier doors as they heard us running up and down! Kudos to Hilary and Tim who completed an extra sprint turn at the end. Every one worked an area of form and under the eagle eye of their running partner, looked to improve some part of their running form!

This weekend we have the Mo run at Upton country park where Ali will be completing her years challenge of 10 in 10 (10x10km races!) so good work Ali. Now time to think of next years challenge! Joining Ali will be Jane, Patricia, Richard and Hilary so I look forward to pics! Elizabeth will also be running the 5k as she waits till the Christchurch 10k in December for her debut 10k! Good luck to our Robert who will be racing his first 10 miler at Wimborne on Saturday!

Congratulations to Elizabeth for becoming Goodgym Poole's first task member! She completed a short online course now that she has completed her 10 runs - always a pleasure to have Liz with us! Tonight also was the 10th run for both Sarah and Richard so we are really being a great core team of awesome people now!

Remember Sian and other runners to check out Run Happy Dorset facebook page where you will find the most comprehensive list of races across Dorset (see the files section). Recommend this list put together by local running family man Ray so go check it out!

Onto tonights task! Lewis-Manning, which was our first ever Goodgym task here at Poole, are making changes! They are moving from their current location at Lilliput to moving to smaller premises next to the Hospital. They will be focusing on care in the community with day centres and satellite centres as oppose in house care and support. Their new premises will be renovated inside so we have volunteered to help clear the outside! It was pretty simple, clear bushes, cut back overgrown areas, clear up the paths and tidy it all up! The task owners weer unable to meet us at the task itself tonight but it had all been planned and prepared and with a bunch of experienced goodgymers it was not long before paired up teams were working in each area.

You can see the before and after photos what a difference 12 runners can make in just 30 minutes! We will be back in the next few weeks to finish off at the front and sides!

Christine get well soon - sorry you had to go but thank you for coming despite feeling under the weather!

Poole Goodgym finally takes the plunge!

Tuesday 25th June 2019

Written by Esther

It all started when buches of runners (33 in total!) starting gathering in the lovely warm courtyard of Daveena's cafe.

We were then joined by some official looking types with a little less lycra from the council including the Council Chairman, David Flagg! One of the councillors Mark Howell was however willing to join us for a run and his first for goodgym along with 22 other first time Goodgym runners! 9 runners who had previously completed a Goodgym task joined us from as far as Bristol and Swanage so showing fantastic committment to Goodgym!

After the pics and speeches, we headed over to the park for a quick warm up where most of us runners demonstrated our lack of balance with the flamingo stand and hopskotch as well as usual warm up drills!

Kirty Weston from Upton parkrun core team led the way through the park and whitecliff to cover 2.1 miles including the gradual incline up Evening Hill. We were met at Lewis-Manning by Sandra and Mark who had even had cold drinks and biscuits ready for us as a welcome treat!

We soon cracked on in 4 groups and everyone was super organised in their groups to get the tasks done. Painting crew included first timers Shelley and Kirsty (whose ankle is fine by the way after a huge branch came at her on the way back!) painted on with Ann, Aaron and Catherine amongst others to complete a rail within 15 minutes! Hedge cutters included Karina, Kristy and Mark who made some clearance for cars to park against the bushes Around the back, the team with a view had rakes and gloves to clear some woodland, leaving James to keep his mileage up by running back and forth with the bin. Gemma, Lisa and Rob amongst others cleared leaves and all sorts! Finally we had a bunch of sweepers who worked to the end getting moss off the car park area.

Amazing what was achieved in 25 mins and we hope to go back for a second coat of paint and a bit more garden clearance.

We took the opportunity to take a photo at the top of Evening Hill, after moving along Oakdale runners who photo bombed!

Finally we ran back down to the park and 3 runners took up the offer to finish up around the park with a short interval circuit as clearly they had not worked hard enough already!

It was hot, sweaty work in the muggy air but the chat was continuous and great to hear the chatter amongst many previous strangers.

We had also been joined by Ed and Nikki from the central Goodgym team who quickly scooted off for their train after, albeit a bit smelly!

Super atmosphere on the runs and all during the task so we can honestly say Goodgym Poole you rocked it tonight!

Next week we are over in Poole park but don't worry - we will still get a good run in before we crack on with the task in hand - It was truly a pleasure to be part of Goodgym Poole launch - I know we are going to be fantastic!
