Camberwell Arts Festival

Camberwell Arts Festival launch day on Camberwell Green with a Big Feast, Arts Market, arts workshops etc

We are a volunteer led organisation that organises an 8 day Festival of arts activities throughout Camberwell. The launch day on Saturday 4 June has a huge amount of free activities for all the family, and a very small number of volunteers to do all of the tasks. The most pressing request for volunteers are: setting up (8.30 - 9am) and taking down (5.30 - 6pm) of 4 gazebos (6m x 3m) requires 6 able bodied adults. Also helping to hang out bunting and other decorations around Camberwell Green. Also setting up and taking down trestle tables at beginning and end of the day.

The BIG FEAST free street party is targetting families of all Camberwell and reaching those in food poverty via food banks. We need volunteers to collect food donations (all arranged in advance) from local businesses and deliver them to Camberwell Green (between 8 - 10am). Also volunteers to help serve out food to those participating in the street party, and to help with a continuous regime of cleaning tables, bagging up rubbish, and ensuring a pleasant feast environment while allowing a continuous turnover of guests.

We have other volunteer roles that can be seen https://www.camberwellarts.org.uk/caf-22-volunteering which are of specific skill/interest scope and may extend longer than the launch date of Saturday 4 June.

5 GoodGymers have supported Camberwell Arts Festival with 9 tasks.

Collecting cakes

Saturday 10th June 2023

Written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)

Sam ran from Balfour Street co-op garden to Camberwell Green to meet Tori and Kelly (organiser of the festival) to collect food from local businesses that were giving away cakes and sweet treats for the free afternoon tea.

Firstly, Tori and Sam went to Lumberjack to collect a tray of cakes before using a shopping trolley to get cakes from Betty's Bakery, Spoloke, Grove Lane Deli and finally, FM Mankal.

The session was quick and easy. Great way to give back and engage with the community.

It's farewell for Camberwell Arts Festival (for another 6 months...)

Saturday 4th June 2022

Written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)

As 17:00 approached, all the stalls were still opened and selling, but one by one they started to shut up shop.

The team gathered around to take down and close all the tables and benches first. Michael had arrived just in time as Richard (the main lead for the gazebo), Sam and Zack needed an extra hand to take down all four gazebos and store them away. Yet, it turns out one of the gazebos got nicked in the process. Sad turn of events, but the storage room was so full by the end that it was probably for the best.

We finished up just before 18:30 and have a long day, we were glad to see another successful event completed.

A feast for Camberwell!

Saturday 4th June 2022

Written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)

As Sam went away to Thorlands for two hours, Zack helped out the CAF volunteers with the Big Feast as they served up a free meal to anyone who wanted or needed it. The feast was meant to last until 15:00, but the food was gone within the hour!

Litter-ally kept it clean

Saturday 4th June 2022

Written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)

As the festivities continued after the Big Feast, Sam and Zack roamed around Camberwell Green in search of any litter to pick up. They wanted to ensure the place was spotless and occasionally they took breaks (Sam more often than Zack) as there were things to see (Dog Show) and things to buy (arty presents). They litter picked from 15:00 (Zack from 13:00) until the very end!

We're hungry for donations

Saturday 4th June 2022

Written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)

After setting up the gazebos, Zack spotted Sam in the distance and introduced himself. It was Zack's first ever good deed! Welcome newbie! He signed up to help collect food donations from the local businesses, but as you will see in the following run reports....he stayed all day and collected 5 good deeds! Wow! Almost a record in GoodGym (as of writing this, 8 is the record), but he must take the record for most good deeds for a newbie....which I don't think we be beaten for quite some time!

Back to the task, Kelly, who was our lead coordinator gave us a list of 2-3 restaurants or bars in the Camberwell area to collect various food donations using a Morrison's trolley. We went to places like Irene's to collect many baked goods as well as Nando's to collect dessert and sauces, but our favourite has to be our journey to Falafel and Shawarma to collect 40 falafels and two trays of spiced potatoes and then heading to the Portuguese cafe to collect a box of egg custard tarts! Yum!

Unfortunately, not all the restaurants had prepared in advance / forgotten, but still there was plenty of food and the CAF organisers had prepared salads too.

Set up shop at the Arts festival

Saturday 4th June 2022

Written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)

Sam arrived half an hour earlier, but helped out at the main Saturday market to put up gazebos before spotting the Camberwell Arts Festival organisers and helped them instead.

Four gazebos were set up - two for the workshop, one for the dog show and one for the big feast!
