Water way to help a community garden - no ifs, no butts

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

Another Monday night in Wandsworth, another chance to meet up with some ace people, make a real difference in the community and to knock out a few planks.

And it was a extra special one because we celebrated the 50th good deed of one Ms Morag - that's a huge amount of doing good and commitment to others. Way to go!

Hannah, Karen, Zoe, Emily, Hannah and Charlotte all came for their first GoodGym run last night - people, give them a massive cheer!

Before our task tonight we popped outside to knock out a warm up which fired up our muscles and got us thinking about coordination and balance ahead of the run. We also did a quick poll to find out which object we simply could not live with out. It quickly became apparent that food and drink topped the list (with beer, wine, cheese and peanut butter the hot favs) and as well as our indispensable phone, Helen's hugs, and trainers, we had a very sweet moment from one corner of the group who decided they could not manage without eachother. Ahh!

Our job tonight was at Bramford Community Garden, which is managed by volunteers and especially Sha - a tireless lady who can often be found gardening into the night with the aid of a headtorch in order to make the garden a nice place for everybody to be. So, after a 2.5 km run down there we found her waiting for us with gloves and a list of jobs.

While a big group got stuck into picking up the many, many cigarette butts (non-biodegradable!) and scraps of plastic around the garden, a few people used troughs to fetch water from across the road for the desperate trees and plants. Other jobs included crushing cans for recycling - universally agreed to be a great stress reliever and perfect for a Monday!

After half an hour of hard work, we got stuck into our fitness session, which last night focussed on conditioning exercises for three main parts of our body - arms, legs and core. Many press ups, plié squats, planks and bridge lifts later we left the garden behind and made our way back to the BAC. Great work everybody!

Next week is a bank holiday, but we will still be running to a local rooftop garden. What better way to spend it?! Sign up here to do good and get fit on your day off [https://www.goodgym.org/happenings/lending-a-hand-at-rooftop-community-garden]!

We're pretty sandy with a paint brush

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

Another beautiful night in Wandsworth, another massive task for a fantastic new community organisation, another fast and furious fitness session smashed!

A huge welcome to all the lovely runners who joined us for their first group run last night - give a massive cheer for Pablo, Marina, Lou-Ann, Sarah and Kay!

Well done to super speedy Chris who raced on Sunday in Richmond and getting not only a 10k but a 10mile PB for his efforts. Great work Chris!

Another massive congratulations goes to the lovely Judith who reached her 50th good deed last night - that's a huge amount of doing good for Wandsworth. Judith, we salute you!

A little reminder about the GoodGym Olympics. The sign up for events is now live! The deadline is the 3rd June, and there are a variety of events on offer, including egg and spoon, a pancake race, 100m, 400m and relays. The entry page has full list of the events and descriptions of some of the lessor know races (including the GoodGym relay, this year's theme is no one gets left behind...think human caterpillar race). If you haven't been to the GoodGym Olympics before it is a fantastically fun day of competition between the different GoodGym areas followed by a social. C'mon Team Wandsworth!

What item always appears in your picnic hamper?

After a rundown of the week's news we headed outside to warm up ready for the run to last night's task at the amazing Caius House, a youth centre in the middle of Wandsworth. While high knees, lunges, twists and bum-jiggling fast feet got our heart rates up, we debated what is the best thing to take on a picnic. While there was a strong booze contingent (wine, gin, tequila, Karen's mixers and Chi's Boston cocktail shaker), there were healthy options with plenty of fruit, sandwiches and houmous, plus of course Ella's essential cups.

Our task tonight was at the new Grub Club, an organisation which helps disadvantaged families get access to good food, nutrition advice and facilities. It was a short run down to Wandsworth Town, where we were met by the founder, Aisling, who told us a bit about her amazing initiative. It was a super organised start thanks to some great prep by Aisling and her designers, so we immediately split into three groups to tackle sanding, painting and rollering. With so many hands, we made light work and the room was a blur of action. Thankfully we were also treated to snacks, including frozen strawberries, fruit bars and even popcorn - 'best task ever', said Jordan!

40 minutes later, we downed tools - but don't worry, we'll be back again to do some more for this important place. Waving goodbye to Aisling and her team, it was just a short hop across the road to the park, where we embarked on 15 minutes of HIT training, focusing on getting our hearts pumping, working our arms and core. The idea behind HIT is that benefits of getting to cardio peaks continue after you've finished the exercises, and with an active recovery between each peak, it's a total body workout. After a short jog back to base, we only had that last hill to tackle, and by the looks of the power behind everybody's final sprint, you worked super hard tonight, team. You should feel proud of yourselves!

Next week it's DOUBLE TASK NIGHT, with half the group going back to Caius House to do more jobs there, and half the group running to empty a local church basement. Two runs, two different distances, double the fun! See you then, gang.

ps If you'd like to find out more and potentially volunteer for the amazing organisation The Mini Mermaid Running Club that Amy was telling us about last night, then let me know and I'll put you in touch.

Good wood, bad wood, wet wood, mucky wood!

Sheffield Report written by Tom Mutton

This week the Sheffield branch of Good Gym set off for our third visit to help Heeley Development Trust.

With a slightly longer run to the Thirwell Rd location it gave us all a chance to warm up on a nippy November eve. On arrival at the top of typical Sheffield steep hill we were warmly greeted by FANTASTIC FRANK who gave us a true to form fantastic brief of the evenings task which was continuing with lifting and shifting a huge pile of logs that are to be bagged up and sold in the future to raise much needed funds for HDT to develop the Thirwell Rd site for small business's such as Regather Bikes who do some fantastic work such as fixing bikes and providing them to Asylum seekers.

We split into three teams. Two human chains piling logs into a log stall and tonne bags and one crack team of suitably strong men and women to lift and shift some of the biggest logs ever seen by human eyes with a wheelbarrow! SCIENTIFIC STEVE set about improving our efficiency with some logorithmic algorithms, what wood we do without him? The human chain saw the pile quickly go down as the evening went on.

With all teams happily chipping away at the task under floodlight kindly provided by FANTASTIC FRANK the shout for the last minute was raised and the pressure was pilled on with some people starting to crack but we pulled it together in true @GGSHEFF fashion and got the job done!

Following a big log pile group photo we got warm before heading back into the night with some static sprints and paired arm rows.

On the way back we made a brief fitness stop in one of our fave parks parks for some quick fire fitness including:

  • Box jumps or step ups
  • Tri Dips
  • Piston Squats
  • Two up group sprints

To finish us all off we added some underpass squat shenanigans and Mobot sprint and return loops to keep us together and add some individual challenge before stretching off outside the hubs and hearing all the latest news including:

  • REGATHER XMAS SOCIAL - Tues 12 Dec - 6-10pm
  • PERCY PUD - This Sunday!
  • BUCHAREST RUNNING FESTIVAL - 12-13 May. Promised spreadsheet link here. Get signed up, not to be missed!
  • JANUARY CHALLENGE - Get STRAVA linked up to your GG account, if your not sure, ask.

Next week we are off to The Real Junk Food Project, get signed up today.

Until then, happy running :)
