GoodGym Elves do Christmas deliveries across Sheffield

Tue 21 Dec
Report written by Michelle

'Twas the week before Christmas, when all through the city; Some Goodgymers were stirring, even when the weather was gritty.

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care; In hopes that GoodGymers soon would be there.

The people were nestled all snug in their beds; While visions of frozen Food Works meals danced in their heads.

And GoodGymers in their trainers, or on their bikes; Had just read the spreadsheet of addresses for a long winter's hike; 'Live Well' whistled, and shouted, and called us by name:

"Now, Celine! now, Charly! now, Mike, Bee and Hannah! On, Seiko! On Max! On Cat, Chelle and Rach! To the top of the porch! to the end of the ginnel! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

So when out in the garden there arose such a clatter; People sprang from their chairs to see what was the matter. When what to their wondering eyes did appear; But a GoodGymer, a present and a meal very near!

And we whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: "Now, Margaret! Now, Peter! These are for you; Come answer the door as I've got 5 more to do.

Despite flats and absent folk. And people who were not awoke. And gates there were locked. And no one could hear despite how loud we knocked... (We left notes, spoke to neighbours and phoned them).

But then they did answer the door with such glee! And we felt happy we could give our time for others than me!

Some shed a lone tear; And were grateful to be near. To be thought of and seen when no one else may have been.

And after a wave, smile, chat and happy face; We sprang on our feet, to the very next place; To climb the hills of our fine Sheffield - the great cit of steel; Which is green, friendly and charming and has such appeal (particularly to Londoners in covid times).

And we heard all exclaim, as we went out of sight — “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

Thanks to all those that gave their time to deliver presents and meals to people across the city.

There was such lovely feedback from beneficiaries and volunteers and from the Referral agency (Live Well which is part of South Yorkshire Housing Association - SYHA) so thanks all so much. Great also to deliver meals lovingly made by volunteers at Food Works, our local food waste charity.

Phone calls were also made on Christmas weekend so well done to all those volunteers too as not necessarily an easy task. And lovely volunteers from other GG groups in the country signed up.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

A Clean Sweep for Sustrans on the National Cycle Network

Mon 6 Dec
Report written by Tom Mutton

A big welcome to Katie and Sam who came along to their first GG run tonight!

It was looking grim out today, but true to form the GG SHF crew would not have their spirits dampened, we had leaves to sweep!

After intros and photos we headed up up up (yes three) to meet SUSTRANS Simon who is the Sheffield Lead Ranger and volunteer coordinator for SUSTRANS and does a fantastic job with other volunteers in keeping the National Cycle Network (NCN) in good order for all types of users to enjoy.

We wanted to help so with good stiff bristled brushes in hand we got to work on the Manor Way section of the NCN where a huge amount of leaves have fallen onto the path, creating a slipping hazard for anyone using the path. We swept a huge portion of the path clear for future users to enjoy safely alongside some litter picking, branch moving and stone rolling.

Once we had loaded the brushes back into Simon's van and said our goodbyes it was time to go down down (in an earlier round) whilst taking in the heat from a rather dangerous looking front garden fire. Once at Ponds Forge steps we got a couple of rounds of stair based activities in before heading home via the Zebra crossings where we lunged and channeled our inner Beatles. Once back to base we stretched off and headed inside to the warm for some drinks and chats.

Bag it up, bag it in, let me begin...

Mon 8 Nov
Report written by Tom Mutton

HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Task Force member and all round legend James who was on his 300th good deed! Please give him a massive load of cheers!

After the now customary cloaking ceremony and photo we headed through the warmth of Sheffield train station and up the Steel city steps on route to meet Helen from Norfolk Park Walled Gardens at the top of the park where she gave us a brief of the project, it's links to Heeley City Farm and the task for the eve.

The nights task involved us bagging up as many tonne bags of dried leaves as possible which are going to be stored long term to compost down into material for high quality peat free organic compost to be used in the garden in the future.

We got straight to it, grabbing bags, leaves and rakes and before we knew it we had bagged up 10 big bags of the lovely rustlers!

Once we had brought all the bags back into the walled garden and said our thanks and goodbyes to Helen we headed back down the Steel City Steps and used the Ampitheatre as our fitness playground to get three good rounds of step ups in with three difficulty options:

  1. Regular step up on your choice of step height
  2. Regular step up plus a squat down
  3. Box Jumps on the steps

After three rounds the legs were feeling it and we headed back through the station and back to the Showroom for some food and drinks to finish the evening off.

Until next time, happy running! :)

Norfolk Park Walled Garden - Lots of Leaves: Raking bagging, dragging & stacking

Mon 8 Nov 18:30 pm
Showroom Cinema , 15 Paternoster Row, Sheffield, S1 2BX
Helping to create leaf mould to improve the soil on site

We will be collecting leaves on site to make leafmould. Fallen leaves in the vicinity of the walled garden need to be raked up and collected into bags then taken to the garden (very close by) & stacked onto an overgrown area ready to be stored for 1 to 3 years to make leafmould which is used to make a seed sowing or potting mix for seedlings & plants.

The impact of our leaf collection will be the provision of a valuable resource for Heeley City Farm's food growing activities. Leaf mould as a growing medium replaces bought in growing media which are costly & not always good quality. The impact will be a saving of funds but also better quality plants which leads to better quality produce for people eat. Furthermore plenty of learning will come from the process of making leafmould into growing media. The bags of leaves are to be stacked over an overgrown area so will also help to suppress weeds which will then allow the area to be turned into a more productive space in 1 to 3 years time.

Please bring your own gloves and headtorch and if you have a GG floodlight, please charge and bring with you. Thanks.

Paving the way for cyclists through Lynwood Gardens

Mon 1 Nov
Report written by Tom Mutton

Happy Birthday to us! We turned 5 years old!

This week it was Max's 50th deed so he got the honor of the now customary GG red bow tie (bit easier to run in than the 100 cape!). Congrats Max!

It was great to welcome Ivo (GG's founder) and also Levi Ashton from Sheffield City Council who came to see us in action and think about how we might be able to work together more in the future.

This week we were off to Lynwood Gardens to help Sustrans Simons to clear a connecting path of the National Cycle Network (NCN) that is a key link, helping cyclists to avoid the traffic on Glossop Road.

There was plenty to go at from slippy mud build up to overgrown trees and weeds, sweeping slippery leaves off the path and more. Within our alloted time, the path looked unrecognizable at the end becoming safer, wider and much more usable. Top work team!

On the way back we took in some strategic stairs where we took on the QUAD KILLER, which involved the following:

  • x2 sets of 1-2 stair squats
  • x2 sets of high knees
  • x2 sets of wall sits

After a fantastic effort from all we headed back to base to stretch off and get ready for the birthday celebrations!

We headed to Chakra Lounge for some delicious food where we were all filled to the brim!

BIG THANKS to Celine for fantastic organization and Rachel for making the fantastic GG cake!

Here's to another 5 years!

Like it or leaf 🍁 it!

Mon 25 Oct
Report written by Tom Mutton

Its getting chilly!

This week we did some meeting in a car park, but the good kind!

We met with Susan from Sheffield Litter Pickers who helped us to get tooled up ready for the task at hand which this week was weeding and litter picking a car park in Heeley used by the local co-op shoppers, medical centre visitors and general shoppers.

By the time we were done it was looking as good as a new car park can look...!

We thanked Susan and headed toward the U Mix centre for some paired fitness fun that involved leg/knee lifts and squats.

After a couple of rounds we headed home to stretch off and get burgers bigger than our mouths!
