Group Fitness Activities
Hi everyone and welcome to GoodGym Greenwich!
We're a friendly and social group who combine running with volunteering in the local community. We meet every Wednesday to get active and do a physical task for charities and community organisations in the area.
This week we'll be helping at Cook's Farm Allotment in Plumstead. Dee's Childcare have a lovely little allotment site which became overgrown and a little worse for wear during the pandemic.
They need some help with weeding, strimming the grass and potentially if we can, propping up the fence and mending the bug hotel so put on your insect repellent and come and get stuck in!
Our run this week will be just under 3km each way. Everyone is welcome at any pace - we never leave anyone behind!
Where & When
We meet at 6.45pm for a 7 o'clock start at the Equitable Pub in woolwich. There is space to store bags in the pub if you'd like to. The session will be about 90 minutes in total so we should be all wrapped up by 8.30pm.
What To Bring
Please bring some gloves, otherwise it's just yourself!
A lovely group gathered at the garrison church to one again tackle the brambles. We are working hard with these visits to help prepare the south side of the church’s grounds for a community garden they have plans for.
The group got stuck in with a hilarious mixture of tools, only some of which were ideal for the task of getting the brambles back. We all felt the sting of the brambles and contemplated on the ideal thickness of a gardening glove, I will be on the hunt for some!
After a concerted effort to clear more of the brambles and many trips with the wheelbarrow to the graveyard of bramble vines, we called it a day and sat in the sunshine and enjoyed coffee, sweet treats and some lovely chats.
Thanks all gang, it’s looking very promising after our regular visits! Make sure to join us again soon, we have another community mission litter picking tomorrow on woolwich common, and a group run Wednesday starting in woolwich. A quick and late - oh so late - report. Please do forgive my tardiness, friends!
We started and it was hot. Proper summer hot. And our glistening faces could first be seen in a large circle in the Naval College. Where we were - admittedly - a little silly.
Lassos, snakes in boots, bandits... the joy of an old drama game made us all a little silly in the sun.
And then we were off - down a rather wonderfully historic part of Greenwich - and through to the lovely garden at Christchurch on Trafalgar Road.
We weeded and tidied and (as you'll see from our photos) we grabbed up a fair amount of nature's excesses, and all in time for that lovely community to enjoy their garden over the summer.
Nice one, folks!
We're going to help out the Friends of Woolwich Common who work to protect this beautiful open space and keep it clear from litter.
They'll have plenty of bags and pickers so just bring some gloves with you. If you register to be an Environmental Champion at firstname.lastname@example.org you can also get your own pickers from the council.
We'll meet opposite the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on the common at 11am. This will be a recurring task on the last Sunday of each month to keep the common in tip top condition! The Friends of group will give you a good welcome. Make sure you take some snaps and nominate someone to write the run report!
The St George's Garrison Church was designed by Thomas H Wyatt and built between 1862-63 to serve the Royal Artillery in Woolwich. Today it is run by a local group, the Woolwich Garrison Church Trust who are committed to making it available for all to visit and enjoy.
They are planning to build a Commonwealth & Gurkha Garden on the land beside the Church and need lots of brambles cut back to prepare the space.
Bring some gardening gloves (if you have heavy duty ones these will come in very handy!), come and get stuck in and we'll enjoy a cuppa afterwards :)
