Fly Hard 2: Flyer Harder

Mon 8 Nov
Report written by Kim Parker

It was wonderful to see some familiar faces return to group runs last night and also to welcome new faces from our neighbouring boroughs!

We started the evening by distributing the flyers amongst the group as we had a lot to carry and warmed up with a game of rock, paper, scissors which is fast becoming my favourite warm up. The confusion between who wins and loses and the realisation that even the winner has to do some form of exercise...

Armed with my trusty paper map marked with the streets we needed to cover, we headed up the hill for a second time to deliver the rest of the leaflets. A couple of people tackled the streets at the bottom of the hill and the rest of us continued making our way to the top.

Julian and Miguel tackled a long street with multiple side streets and rejoined us nearer the top of the hill. No getting lost - they deserve big cheers.

Another group headed off down further side streets and rejoined us at the top, just in time for the final group to rejoin us as we made our way down the hill and back to the start point. Fantastic work everyone!

We have a community mission on Saturday at St Mary's Church, we'll be getting involved in planting the shade boarder and planting bulbs. Sign up here

Next week we are heading back to Hither Green to tackle the mountain of soil again - third time lucky. All the info here.

Spread the word about the Age Exchange Christmas Fair

Mon 8 Nov 18:45 pm
Glass Mill Leisure Centre, 41 Loampit Vale, Lewisham, SE13 7FT
Distribute flyers for Age Exchange

Welcome to GoodGym Lewisham! We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet every week to get active and do a physical task to help the charities and community organisations and projects in our area.

The Task:

This week's task is a fun one! We will be delivering flyers for the amazing Age Exchange in Blackheath, to advertise their Christmas Fair. There will be varying distances to cover, so it's a task suitable for all levels of running experience.

The Run/walk:

GoodGym is for everyone. We welcome runners of all abilities and it is often possible to walk to the task if you would prefer. We always have a back-marker so no-one is left behind - we're about achieving something together so you'll always be welcome no matter what your pace is.

Flyering on the streets of Blackheath

Mon 1 Nov
Report written by Kim Parker

The leaflets for tonights task had been on a very long journey from collection in Blackheath, to Catford, to work in Green Park to Glass Mill then finally delivered back on the streets leading up to Blackheath.

We headed out all the way up to the top of Belmont Hill, focusing on our arms and occasionally pretending we were penguins (a Lewisham favourite). We split into groups and tackled the side streets off Belmont Hill, we lost and found each other a couple of times but all in all a successful evening flyering for Age Exchange.

Half of the streets on our map covered and over 5km and lots of steps ran in the process. There were either lots of steps to climb up or big long drives to get to the front doors - giving us an extra workout!

Fantastic work everyone! We are continuing next week and hopefully we'll get all the flyers delivered and help to promote this wonderful event. Sign up here!

Many lights make hand work fun

Mon 4 Oct
Report written by Kim Parker

With the lights fully charged it was off to a good start this week (other than the rainstorm that passed through shortly before the group run was due to start)! We did a quick warm up and made our way as a group up the hill to Hither Green.

It was already dark by the time we arrived at the task but we positioned our lights and got to work clearing the weeds from the end of the fence and pavement. There was even a little bit of attention from the local neighbours checking out what we were up to!

Once the fence line was clear of weeds, we moved onto the the pathway and cleared as many weeds as we could. Luckily we all had gardening gloves as we were limited to just our hands to get the job done! Great work everyone, the before and after pictures show your hard work!

With all the weeds piled up neatly, there was just time for a group photo which made use of our additional lighting and highlighted the dramatic sky. Oli then took us on a mystery route to Ladywell Fields where we had a quick lucky dip fitness session, everyone kept picking squats out the bag, I have no idea how that happened....I'm sure there was an equal number of each exercise!!

A couple more hill sprints for those that wanted to and we began to make our way back to Glass Mill.

Good luck to everyone running the Petts Wood 10k on Saturday - enjoy the post-race samosas!!

Weeding at Saint Swithuns

Mon 4 Oct 18:45 pm
Glass Mill Leisure Centre, 41 Loampit Vale, Lewisham, SE13 7FT
Improve the outdoor space for the local community

CHANGE OF TASK

Welcome to GoodGym Lewisham!

We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet every Monday evening to get active and do a physical task to help the charities and community organisations in our area.

The Task

We will be heading over to Hither Green to help our friends at Saint Swithun's Church. There will be lots to get involved in, including digging up weeds, clearing a pathway and removing rubble. Don't forget a headtorch as the evenings are getting darker now

The Run

The run this week is one of our longer ones, around 2km each way. We always have a back-marker so no-one is left behind - we're about achieving something together, so you'll always be welcome no matter what your pace is.

The Essentials

We meet at Glass Mill Leisure Centre at 6.45pm, so a short walk from Lewisham Station. Look out for the red t-shirts! As this is one of our longer runs, please arrive promptly so we can set off on time and make the most of our time a the task.
