Transport Greggs leftovers to a homeless charity

Bright Morning Star Prisons and Homeless Outreach help to rebuild, support and elevate the lives of the most vulnerable people on the street and at their Walk-In Centres. They provide basic and immediate physical and emotional help to the public, and provide a free counselling service.
We've been asked to help with transporting leftovers from Greggs, 4 Electric Avenue, Brixton to Chandler Community Hall, Lambeth Walk, SE11 6DU. Here's a map - it's a 4km run/ride.
If you go in and say you're collecting food for Bright Morning Star Prison and Homeless Outreach, they should give you the leftovers! There may be quite a lot so just take what you can :)
πPlease bring a backpack/panniers to transport the food (plastic bags might be useful too as the bags the pastries etc are in are greasy!).
π€ΏPlease bring a mask to wear in the shop
We need 3 people to sign up to transport the food - you can either run or ride, together or separately. If there are any problems, please call Lola on 07492079197 or 07946288144.
Any questions? Email me π markgilyead@goodgym.org
Thank you π and hope it goes well!

Is cooking chocolate confectionery or somewhere else?
Jacqui, Paul and Gayle spent a few hours on one of those days between Xmas and New Year when no-one is quite sure exactly what day it is at Brixton Rec Food Hub. We helped the Healthy Living Platform team pack and load supplies to go to the local community, and unpack the delivery that came in from Fareshare. With such a large operation in place, the team quickly had to learn what went where etc, before engaging muscles that had sort of disappeared over the Xmas period (well, at least in Paul's case!). A bit of cleaning and tidying later, and a job well done was confirmed by all.

Packing, Lifting and Shifting 11 Tons of Food!

This is a big one.
We're looking for help Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday to pack food parcels into boxes to be distributed to local charity hubs who will then distribute packs to families across Lambeth.
The Healthy Living Platform are looking for people who can do at least 9am-midday. 9am-3pm would be incredible. A full briefing will be provided at the start and it should be super satisfying and get you using your whole body!
It's unlikely someone from Taskforce will be there but it should be easy to find - as it's in the Better Gym in the middle of Brixton - I believe in the main hall space.
They've had a few last minute drop outs so will be super grateful for anyone who can make it along, even for a few hours.
PLEASE BRING A MASK as you'll be inside - Thanks!

Double, Double, Soil & Shovel
The first episode in today's two-parter was a very slick affair.
Everyone turned up (big welcome to Ella on her first GG sesh ever π), we shared our favourite meal deal combo (apart from Dawn - she's never had one π€) and got cracking with our task.
We do jobs with the GP Food Co Op a lot - They're basically a bunch of Lambeth GPs who see the benefits of being outside and growing & eating veg, so they've set up a load of planters outside various Lambeth surgeries and patients can help out. It's pretty rad.
Anyway, Crown Dale Medical Centre is getting a big overhaul with a massive extension so the planters need to be moved. But first they had to be emptied of soil - that was our job.
We had 9 shovels, 2 wheelbarrows and a load of huge bags (luckily Chrissy from Crown Dale had bought extras - and we needed them) and needed to move 6 planters-worth of soil into the corner of the car park.
Team 1 got to work quickly, emptying the 3 main planters in no time and making a good start on 2 of the others. Effie and Charlotte became chiefs of the piles (of bags of soil π) and even arranged for them to be filled up on top of each other to save space.
After an hour of hard graft, and finding plenty of leftover potatoes, Team 2 came along to finish the job. Over to you Liv...

Emptying the Planters at Crown Dale Surgery SESSION 1

A community mission!
The Lambeth GP Food Co Op provide patients with the opportunity to grow (and eat) veg at the NHS surgeries across Lambeth.
Crowndale surgery is having some extensive building work done so their planters need to be put in storage, but first they need emptying. Our job is to empty 6 planters of soil into some big bags - this will be a proper good workout πͺ
We have 2 shifts to get this done in - 10-11am & 11-12pm. And there may be more spaces available in the future if they can source more shovels so do check back if it's full.
Suuuper important to bring gardening gloves and keep a good distance from other people at the task (obvs).

ABSolutely laven-der look of those dead heads.
Wasn't too sure how to stylize that pun? π€·ββοΈ
ANYWAY - what a lovely warm evening to be in Kennington Park. The place was buzzing and not just because of the bees.
We arrived in drips and drabs which was actually good in terms of keeping a distance (good thinking everyone). ππ
So even when I arrived people were cracking on with:
πTrimming the lavender (it's going to be made into lavender oil don'tcha know!)
π±Pulling up pesky bindweed
π Litterpicking!
π Dead-heading roses
And plenty of other bits and bobs.
After an hour or so we called it a day. Though some of us stuck around for a game of squat, squat, goose and an un-named core game. ABSA GOLD, ABS from 5ive or ABSO (Abs Behaviour Social Order?)
NICE ONE GUYS
Especially to those of you who are pretty new to GG Lambeth - so great to have you with us. Here's a link to join our WhatsApp and facebook group βοΈ
NEXT TUESDAY we've got a task at the lovely Hillside Gardens Park - sign up here.

Gardening Jobs & Litter Picking @ Kennington Park

It's Keep Britain Tidy week!
We'll be helping out the lovely Friends of Kennington Park team with various gardening jobs and also whizzing round the park grabbing litter.
Post-session optional fitness - Probably some circuits in the park.
Meet by the garden - basically on the East side of the park, to the left of the sports courts.
See yah there π€

Hoe-ly moly
11 brilliant GoodGymmers gathered on a VERY βοΈsunnyβοΈ evening, possibly slightly too warm for those who had impressively run or cycled there ππΌ
Back at the home of GoodGym Lambeth (aka Papa's Park), we noticed the changes and were pleased to see that the playground has reopened and was being enjoyed by lots of local families.
Although the lovely Valcie wasn't able to join us, we got our instructions and got down to work.
There was hoeing, sweeping, weeding, litter-picking and bindweed-plucking (and we all know that no one gets rid of bindweed like GoodGym πͺπΌ)
After just over an hour's hard work in the sun, we called it a day and gathered for a group photo by the rainbow mural and interesting COVID precautions sign π We spent some time pondering just quite how to sing the COVID hand-washing song to the tune of Happy Birthday and believe we may have cracked it π
And that was that. Thank you everyone, Valcie was really pleased with the difference after seeing the photos. And hopefully we'll be back for some more Papa's action soon π€πΌ

Sorting out Papa's Cafe after the refurb!

Papa's Park's Cafe is a pillar of the local community and has long been our home in Brixton.
Valcie (who runs the cafe) has asked for our help with doing a load of weeding around the cafe and play park. And there's been a refurb of the cafe so it'd be great if we could get some GG muscle to move some bits around and tidy it up.
Please bring a mask and gardening gloves! π§€π€Ώ
