Group Run: Disinfecting Baby Toys @ Salvation Army Camberwell (Baby Bank)

Wed 26 Jan 18:30 pm
Old Spike Roastery, 54 Peckham Rye, London, SE15 4JR
Provide safety for babies, children and adults who use this facility

It's Wednesday, which means GG Southwark Group Run

In this group run, we will be running from Old Spike Roastery to Salvation Army Camberwell Corps (on Lomond Grove) to assist Janet & Catherine (task owners), who asked for our assistance to disinfect their baby and children toys for their baby bank (like a food bank, but for baby/children items).

New to GoodGym Southwark?

Not to worry, it can be daunting coming to your first group run, but we are so welcoming whether you're just starting out as a runner or have been running for years. We welcome all!

Here's the important information - the "Where, When and What":

📍 We meet at Old Spike Roastery in Peckham between 18:30-18:45. You can also meet us at the task: Salvation Army Camberwell Corps, 105 Lomond Grove, London SE5 7HG at 19:10.

⌚ 18:30-18:45 (leaving at 18:45 latest). If meeting at the task, be there for 19:10. We will be back in Peckham by 20:15 (latest).

✅ There will be access to Old Spike Roastery, so you can drop your bags and use their toilets before we head out.

🏃🏃‍♀️ After a quick warm-up, we run together as a group. If there are loads of us, there will be a back marker to ensure no one is left behind. On this run, we will be running 2.9k each way. Running at a medium pace to get to the task in 20 minutes. We will spend 45-50 minutes doing the tasks mentioned above (or as much as we can) before running back to finish by 20:15.

Advisable: Bring a head torch🔦 as we are running at night and 🤿 masks as we will be indoors.

Get fit and do good in Greenwich

Hi everyone and welcome to GoodGym Greenwich!

We're a friendly and social group who combine running with volunteering in the local community. We meet every Wednesday to get active and do a physical task for charities and community organisations in the area.

The Task

We will be helping out at More2Childcare this week with weeding, sweeping and power washing in their garden.

The Run

We will be running from the Old Royal Naval College which is only half a km each way. It is a walkable distance so you are welcome to join us at whatever pace - we never ever leave anyone behind!

Where & When

We meet at 6.45pm for a 7 o'clock start at the Old Royal Naval College between the Queen Mary and Queen Anne buildings. The session will be about 90 minutes in total so we should be all wrapped up by 8.30pm.

Please bring a headtorch and warm clothes as we will be outside for the whole session. Some gloves would also be useful and please also wear reflective gear to stay safe travelling to and from the task.

See you then!

Move the soil at Hither Green station embankment

Mon 24 Jan 18:45 pm
Glass Mill Leisure Centre, 41 Loampit Vale, Lewisham, SE13 7FT
Create a wildflower meadow

Welcome to GoodGym Lewisham!

We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet every Monday evening to get active and do a physical task to help the charities and community organisations in our area.

The Task:

We’re heading back to Hither Green station embankment to try and get to the bottom of the mountain of soil that will eventually become a wildflower meadow.

The Run/walk:

GoodGym is for everyone. We welcome runners of all abilities and it is sometimes possible to walk to the task if you would prefer. We always have a back-marker so no-one is left behind - we're about achieving something together, so you'll always be welcome no matter what your pace is.

The Essentials:

We meet at Glass Mill Leisure Centre at 6.45pm, so a short walk from Lewisham Station. We have access to lockers and changing facilities, so you could easily drop in on your way home (bring a pound coin or padlock if you want to use the lockers). Look out for the red t-shirts, we're very friendly! Every so often we head out after our run for some food and drink, a chance to get to know each other a bit better.

See you soon!

Un-dec the halls and down the holly

Mon 10 Jan
•
Report written by Kim Parker

Our first group run of 2022 was taking us up and over the hills to Seniors to take down the Christmas decorations that we put up at the end of November. We were worried this indoor task wouldn't be able to go ahead and Seniors would have their Christmas decorations up until next year but armed with masks and a lot of space at Seniors we were good to go.

We left Glass Mill promptly as my New Years resolution was to get to and from Seniors on time and headed up and over the hills. We focused on using our arms up the hills whilst a group did a slightly longer route to get halfway up the hill - fantastic work everyone. We arrived at Seniors ready and raring to go.

We had less decorations to take down than expected but first we had to find all the boxes in the basement, we formed a human chain to bring them all up but then realised there weren't as many as we expected and a missing Christmas tree box. Fear not, we like a challenge and tied the tree together with string - fingers crossed we have no problems putting it up again next year!

Before we knew it, all the decorations had been taken off the trees and put back in boxes and it was time for the human chain to reform and get all the boxes safely stored in the basement.

After saying our goodbyes and arranging a group run in the garden for March, we headed back up the biggest hill to admire the views out to Canary Wharf. A welcomed downhill all the way to Glass Mill and we arrived back with time to spare.

Join us next week for our 6th birthday group run. We're heading out to collect as many abandoned Christmas trees as possible. Our record is 40+ Christmas trees collected on one group run.

Shifting soil for the pollinator project

Sun 9 Jan 10:00 am
Entrance Gate , Seren Park Gardens car park , LONDON, SE3 7RP
Get fit and do good in Greenwich

The Friends of Westcombe Woodlands take care of some beautiful woodland right next to Maze Hill station. It's only open to the public a couple of times a year so this is a nice opportunity to spend some time in the secret garden (many local people don't know it's there!)

They have three beehives and have secured some funding to plant a wildflower garden strip in the woods to continue to attract bees to the area. Two groups of incredible GoodGymers have moved about two and a half tons of soil and there's half a ton left to be moved about 350 yards from the gate to the glade which will be used to lay meadow turf in the spring.

This will be a fun wheelbarrow relay but it involves several sets of steps and will there will be LOTS of heavy lifting involved so please take care.

Meeting point

If you're not familiar with the woodlands, here 's the directions: Go onto the platform of Maze Hill station on the ticket office side and walk up to the far end. There is a little foot path leading to Seren Park. At the end of the little path, turn right and go to the end of the carpark. You will see the entrance gate and someone from the Friends of Westcombe Woodlands will be there to welcome you!

See it. Smell it. Sort it

Mon 6 Dec
•
Report written by Kim Parker

On a cold and windy evening Lewisham's finest gathered in the foyer of Glass Mill speculating what tonights mystery task would be. Suggestions ranged from: putting up the Christmas decorations, making hangers, modeling the clothes, working out the size of clothes that had missing labels, dressing the mannequins...

All would be revealed after our short run around the corner. Quite often at GoodGym charity shop group runs we are tasked with sorting clothes into general piles of mens, womans and childrens or organising the existing stock but never in my history of GoodGym have we been tasked with sorting the clothes into piles of what will be sold on the shopfloor, there were big decisions to be made tonight.

Step 1: empty the bag by tipping it out Step 2: pick up an item of clothing, check for holes, check for stains and if you can smell it through your mask then it is not making the cut Step 3: sort it into the relevant pile of clothing

After a quick snack break (thank you!!) we got on with bagging these clothes according to their respective categories and then they will be hung on hangers and priced by the team this week.

Next up with tackled some of the unknown bags, most of this was destined to be recycled.

There was still time for a quick browse and I think the item that got the most attention was the Jason Donovan game - does anyone know his favourite food?

A short run back to Glass Mill during which Jacqueline, who we had waved by to at the task, managed to pass us enroute even though she was walking and it was time for the time trial!

4 laps = 1km and everyone could choose how many laps they did. Everyone gave it their best shot and times were amazing!! We'll aim to have the time trial on the first group run of every month to see how we progress.
