SHP Highbury New Park- Big Garden Fix Up!

Thu 29 Jul

The team at Single Homeless Project dropped Goodgym Islington a line to see if we would like to return to their lovely garden space for the evening. We have been helping with their completely renovated social area during lockdown, and it would be great to have it looking perfect for the residents (in time for the easing of restrictions).

The plan is to take care of a series of garden maintenance tasks as a team (many hands make light work!), including clipping, strimming, planting and weeding activities.

Cyclists wanted! Ringcross Community Centre Foodbank

Fri 23 Jul

Ringcross Community Centre has been operating a large foodbank since the start of lockdown, and currently offers food and essentials to over 70 Islington households every week.

Islington Cycle Club have also offered assistance to the project, by arranging a food collection pickup from shops and supermarkets, often using a cargo e-bike.

Goodgym have offered to assist with delivering shopping parcels to various households around Islington (no more than 2 miles from the community centre).

Would you like to be a foodbank cycle courier?

All deliveries will be prepared in advance, with addresses and contact phone numbers attached to the parcels.

You will need:

A bike

A method for carrying pretty heavy stuff

This can be pannier bags, or a large rucksack (12 ltrs or larger). Most deliveries would be the size of 4 shopping bags of items, so a larger capacity bag will make your trip easier. A few spare bags will be available to borrow if required.

There are 3 large bags available to borrow if you are without a suitable rucksack!

Some sort of map

Google maps on your phone would be fine.

Confidence when cycling on London streets

We are looking for safe cyclists! Steady, controlled and predictable cycling is preferred over speedy deliveries!

Any questions, feel free to contact Simon Fitzmaurice (Islington Trainer).

The return on Group Runs!!!

With a summer downpour perfectly timed for the start of the session they turned out to be tears of Joy!!

Helping to celebrate the GoodGyming marvel that is East London Superstar Emma!! Having only picked up her GG gloves in March it has been a monumental effort to dominate every GoodGym activity with amazing energy and enthusiasm!! Looking forwards to many GoodDeeds to come!!

In true GG style we were literally up to our ankles in it at the enchanting Hackney City Farm!! After our debrief from superstar Ken we set about our shovel and tip task helping to regenerate the soil to allow a huge new hedge row to be planted in the Autumn.

Some monster efforts on the shovels and skillful barrow pushing allowed 2 tonnes of muck to be shifted in an action packed 50 minutes of action!!

Great effort from Woody for joining me on a very wet run!! Hopefully a few more join next time!!

Look forward to seeing you next Tuesday as we visit Debbie at Wilton Estate Community garden.

Good Morning Tufnell Park Plant Nursery!

Wed 21 Jul 08:00 am
McCall House and Hollins House Plant Nursery, Tufnell Park Rd, London, N7 0PJ
Preparing a community plant nursery for the local residents

Frannie from Octopus Community Network has invited us back to the Tufnell Park Plant Nursery for an early morning lifting task.

This is a really great hidden community project!

Our plan is to move a large collection of donated compost bags to the nursery using wheelbarrows and carts. A huge job for one person, made easy with many hands. 30 minutes total duration expected.

Some directions from Frannie:

"The easiest way to find (the nursery) is to walk along Tufnell Park Road from the Holloway Road, so that the Odeon is on your right, than at the first little zebra crossing look left for Hollins House and McCall House, enter the estate and walk to the back between the 2 blocks and look left and there is the community Plant Nursery."

None Shall Grass

Mon 19 Jul
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

The Goodgym Islington crew returned to Market Road Gardens yesterday evening (gathering around the famous milk float/tool shed affectionately named "Elizabeth Gertrude" or "Old Bessie") for a sunny summer community session.

Our team have been involved with the renovation of this lovely hidden green space just across the road from Caledonian Park over the past year, and the area has become a thriving permaculture garden (with over 40 species of plants and flowers growing strong).

Our task this time was to separate some discarded branches and green waste from our dedicated woodchip pile (using wheel barrows and shovels), and then to continue filling the bay as best we can. Steve and Tom also helped with clipping away some overgrown nettles and thistles from the main pathways- curating the space, while letting it go wild! Woody and Mali were the main wheelbarrow drivers this evening, while Nikki, Paul and Sam took it in turns to fill up the barrows with plants and wood chip.

Frannie from Octopus Community Network was thrilled with the progress we have been making with this ongoing project, and how these gardens have flourished with the recent rainfall.

Next Monday, we will be back at Market Road Gardens, but as part of our first Goodgym Islington group run since early 2020! How exciting!
