Improving the biodiversity of this green space

Mon 13th Jul at 6:15pm
Norwich Report written by Ian Gostling
On a cooler sunny evening, 7 GoodGymer's ran, walked or cycled to Douro Place.
This small green space is managed by Grapes Hill Community Garden, and we were met by 3 of their members providing tools and instructions.
The area had become overgrown with thistles recently, and weeds spreading out over pavement. So our first task was pulling it all out, cutting back the grass and edging. When 2 large sacks were filled, we tended to the shrubs and hollyhocks that have thrived here. After more planting and litter picking, the hour was up - it was great to see the difference we made!
Well done team!

It was a warm evening tonight! 9 GoodGymer's ran, cycled and walked bravely up Gas Hill to St Matthew's church.
We met Penny & Eddie who handed round drinks and pointed out where to work in the grounds and the car park, pulling up weeds and cutting back overgrown brambles & branches.
We started around the war memorial, pulling weeds from the paving around it, and cleaning off the dried moss.
In an hour we had also cleared the areas around the church sign, and improved access to the car park entrance.
Shout out to Mildrade, Konstantina and Hepsi joining us for their first group session! It was lovely meeting you all.

GoodGym Norwich is 9! That's a whopping 9194 Good Deeds in 9 years!!
Tonight 16 GoodGymers ran and cycled to Mousehold Heath for a conservation task followed by a celebratory picnic!
With the sun shining, Will lead us to the area of the heath in need of some work. We got stuck in pulling up bracken, to allow other species of plants to grow, particularly heather. This helps to improve pollination and biodiversity.
In an hour we had cleared the area of bracken, with the difference before and after clearly visible! Shout out to Tondi who attended his first session.
Then it was time to party! With hot & cold drinks, blankets full of food and homemade treats, we stayed until there was little left over. We also had a chance to say thanks to Steven for leading this great group for 8 & a half years!!

The Shindig 2026 Sunday walk had something for everyone, combining history and nature along 5km of trails around YHA National Forest. With nods to the area's industrial past in a beautiful countryside setting, 25 GoodGymers joined for a very mindful morning.
We walked through Conkers, along the Ashby Canal, past Moira Furnace and around Donisthorpe Woodland Park, before heading along part of the Ashby Woulds Heritage Trail (a disused railway) back to base.
The highlight was stumbling across a Living History Camp as part of an event at Moira Furnace Museum. As well as a history lesson, we got a snapshot of the more simple parts of wartime life. Not something you see every day!
Good movement, good time in nature, and good connection, what better way to round up another beautiful GoodGym Shindig weekend ๐
