Cutting it Vine....

Brighton Report written by Brighton runner

It seems Hove Prom was the place to be tonight! There were many people out running and "promming" with the sun and still water it felt like a great spot to relax....

Not for these Goodymers though! We had a date with some gardening utensils and an over ground church yard! We ran along the sea front to St. Andrews Church of Hove to meet Vicar Dan who was already mowing between some headstones. Dan, and the parish, are hoping to keep the grounds tidy to discourage antisocial behavior and make it somewhere for people to enjoy as well as pay their respects.

We had the choice of hand tools to help with general weeding or power tools to do some real destructive gardening! Frannie, Tabby and Amro, geared up with mowers and strimmers tackled the knee high grass, [Angela](/runners/angela-mynott, Juliet, and Matt went town on bindweed which had obscured several head stones, while Jane, Jason, Rebecca and Michael cleared the back of the grounds where some antisocial activity has been known to take place.

With so many hands this week and Vicar Dan's well stocked garden equipment store, we got a lot cleared and rewarded ourselves with a core work out! As runners and walkers it is go to maintain our core to help keep our posture and isolate our arms from our legs so that they work together to propel us forward and to that finish line! To promote some social behavior we completed 10 core exercises in the round - hopefully no one will be feeling it too much tomorrow! If anyone wanted to have another go at our work out your can find it here.

With task and work out complete we headed back along the seafront for a steady, flat run.

Well done to Jane who told me she is doing couch to 5k - looking to see you at a Parkrun very soon!

Best of luck to Angela who is doing the 10k at the Brighton Trails event this Sunday - hope the trail run from the other week will help you smash out a great time!

I’ve almost pun out of runs!

Brighton Report written by Tara Shanahan

Welcome tonight to Graham, joined us in March 2020 (!) joined us for his first group run last night. And a comment from the man himself…

"I really enjoyed meeting you all on my very first GG deed and my amble around the level. Who knew weeding would be so satisfying, might even start hacking my own garden now! Thank you for making me welcome. "

Our work on the Percy Wagner bed over the years has led to some vast improvements for the local residents. When we first went there about 4 years ago it was gloomy, overgrown, absolutely covered in litter and was clearly being used for all sorts of dodgy purposes, causing a massive nuisance for those living in the almshouses behind. Last year the council did a major cut back of the shrubbery that was providing cover for the dodginess and on our visit last night there was practically no litter, just vast amounts of the usual bindweed for us to pull up by the armful.

Elsewhere our battle with the local scribblers continued as we deployed in pairs to cover various artless tags and daubings around the Lewes Road and Southowver Street. And newly Task Force qualified Stefania and Michael helped cut back some overgrown shrubbery b;ocking the light on some communal housing.

We finished the evening with a bit of relay running around the Level

I really hope to see lots of you next week for what will be my last group run for a while and of course there will be some pub action after, watch this space!

A Marathon Effort!

Brighton Report written by Tara Shanahan

Firstly huge congratulations to Michael for not only completing a marathon on Sunday but turning up to do Goodgym on Tuesday! I know the marathon didn’t go quite to plan but it is a phenomenal achievement to have completed and we loved hearing all about it last night. Feel proud!

Also last night a big Goodgym welcome goes to Matthew joining us for his first experience.

Our task tonight was a visit to the ever fantastic community garden that is Ingram Crescent. Every time we visit this place just gets better and better and they have now added a large seating area including a carved wooden fox. Michael & Juliet worked with resident Vic to scrub all the bird droppings of the benches ready to be used for the upcoming Easter weekend.

With a wet afternoon ruining the possibility of painting the shed as planned gardener Kim came up with a couple of alternative tasks. Firstly we created a 'fence' out of old bits of wood to house bags of rotting leaf mould and then we raked over some beds to remove sticky weed.

A quick pic with the fantastic Mx Fox before we headed back and then off to the Wick for our monthly social.
