A Bit Bookish!

Swindon Report written by Ashleigh Netherton

15 runners gathered virtually from their sofas, studys and tent (Paul and family) for this week's quiz, which was co-hosted by Sam and Ashleigh.

The quiz had an educational theme, Sam gathered inspiration from her calander and Ashleigh from her bookshelf and the week's homeschooling adventures.

To warm up, the ice-breaker question was "What is your favourite book?". Roald Dahl got the most recommendations, especially from mini goodgymers, Luke and Eli.

The quiz categories were: The Olympics, botany, biology and literature. Runners are now more clued up on knowing their 'Love Apples' from their 'Deathcaps' and we cleared up "who killed Nancy" and exactly "what was Jonathan Livingston?". We also learnt that dibbers are not just for stirring the botony in your gin!

Once the scores were in and team Stuart and Tracy were crowned triple champions, conversation soon reverted to gin, lawn mowers and the best place to keep your hoe!

Keith Bosses it Again!

Swindon Report written by STUART KINGSLEY

Once again we put on our thinking caps instead of our trainers on a Tuesday evening and had yet another quiz. Stuart upped his game this week and hosted a 60-question Movies Quiz. Although Charles was on time this week, he was yet again sent to the Headmaster for a pigeon incident. Not quite so random this time, the questions were all ‘movies’ related and to add a bit of spice this week we had a joker round. Only Tracey and Gina went for the quotes round (which turned out to be the easiest) and as for the rest, to quote from Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, they chose unwisely!

The questions were coming thick and fast, and proved quite enjoyable judging by the squeals of delight from Tracey and Kirsty every time a Top Gun or Dirty Dancing question came up. A few groans from those who still haven’t seen The Shawshank Redemption – do you not know me by now? My favourite was the Dead or Alive round, which proved that when you’re dead, people don’t necessarily know!

We were again joined by Keith, who was immediately odds on favourite with the bookies after his last quiz win. The bookies were right, and although most people’s scores were in the mid 30’s to low 40’s, Keith bossed it with an impressive 50. As promised, the first prize (a bottle of Rothschild Champagne) was duly delivered to his door the next day. He answered the door very quickly, which was good because I’m sure I saw Kirsty, Tracey and Teresa hiding behind the bushes in next-door’s garden!

So, well done everyone, and we all look forward to entertainment provided by Ashleigh next week.

Keep safe and happy!

Luke, tonight’s Zoom Raider, was not shorts of great questions for our weekly quiz!!

Swindon Report written by Simon Sperring

For tonight’s quiz, Luke compiled his first solo quiz for our weekly Zoom social gathering.

Things will seem strange when we do all meet up again. Will we need to bring a square ‘selfie frame’ and sit on each others shoulders to be recognised. Tracey will be OK as long as she is holding a glass of ‘apple juice’, Richard has a ruck of computers behind him and Teresa brings along the killer cat and has Chris sitting at the next table heckling!!!

The fun began with the ice breaker. Your favourite scene from a film, whether it made you laugh, cry or just memorable! During home schooling Luke wrote about his favourite scene from Home Alone, when Criminal Marv’s hair caught alight and he put his head in the toilet to extinguish the flames!!

Twenty questions on a wide range of subjects, although Helen rumbled a question coming from the Joe Wicks daily PE Lessons, no one could have guessed question 5 coming straight from Luke’s very informative Roald Dahl shorts!!!

Although not the most important, scores were close and congratulations to first time quizzers Keith and Fran Williams for a winning debut. We hope you can join us again in the near future.

We are so grateful to everyone for embracing the quiz and Luke’s questions. Luke thoroughly enjoyed the quiz and has already started researching questions for next time.

Want to join us again? Then check out tonight's quiz here!

WHEELIE nice to meet you all, SOAP to see you LUBE again soon!

Swindon Report written by Emma Sperring

31 runners ran 5.4km to help Wheels for All at the County Ground in Swindon

So welcome everyone to GoodGym Swindon! With much anticipation and excitement our launch night had finally arrived. HOORAY!!! GoodGym was first talked about in Swindon by Paul 'The Scientist' Bonner back in the summer of 2016 and now at last it was here thanks to Paul and a small team of Run Leaders with interesting names:

  • Emma 'The Trainer' Sperring
  • Paul 'The Scientist' Bonner
  • Emily 'Crazy Legs' McManamon
  • Lewis 'The Bird' Bird!

Feel free to chat to Emily 'Crazy Legs' as to the meaning of these names! You will know her by sight as she has a reputation for wearing brightly coloured leggings at every opportunity!

With the paparazzi taking photos and people passing by wondering what was going on, the GoodGym Swindon crew gathered outside the the Oasis Leisure Centre ready to get going! Thanks to the Leader of the Council, David Renard, for the opening speech, Emma, 'The Trainer' then continued with some very important announcements, which I'm hoping everyone listened to?! Maybe the parkrun megaphone would be useful in the future?!

Following a headcount, we then made our way to the County Ground, home to Swindon Town Football Club, foregoing the shortest route so that we could go the Scenic Route around the Magic Roundabout, a new experience for our GoodGym visitors from Royal Wootton Bassett (you know who you are!), Bristol and London.

Then at last we turned the corner, ran towards the Athletics Track, and saw 'Bike Mechanic' Lew Lawton and the team from Wheels for All with buckets of soapy water and sponges ready and waiting for us to arrive to clean those dirty bikes! And what fun we all had not only cleaning the bikes but also testing them out around the County Ground Extension with Lewis 'The Bird' one of the first on a tandem! Thanks to Lew for his extensive knowledge of bike maintenance but also Ben, Rich and James from Wheels for All.

We then decided to head back to the Oasis, home of the famous Domebusters(!), with one group going the quickest way and another group taking a detour around Tesco, we all arrived back pretty much safely keen to do some stretching before Coffee Corner closed. And the best bit of the night - relaxing and having a chat while eating mini milks. Heaven!

Please come and join Paul 'The Scientist' next week for a steady run into Penhill. We will be getting those paintbrushes out ready to help Glynis at the Haven. From all of us at GoodGym Swindon we look forward to seeing you all again soon!
