Shelf-help: cut out the mess and focus on you!

King's College London Report written by Alyx Murray-Jackman

Tonight we visited St Patrick’s Montessori Day Nursery, who deliver a fantastic service for children in the local area (0-5 yr olds!). We also ran 4km and chucked a few hill sprints in for good measure.

We had two new runners this evening - Liv and Meran - so give them a cheer for coming along GoodGym!

We had a lot of news this evening, so just to remind you all:

  • Running Fitness sessions with Westminster trainer, Joel: whether you're a fitness newbie or a seasoned marathon runner Joel can help you improve. Beginners very much welcome. They are meeting at 6.45pm outside Vauxhall tube station in front of Nando's, and everything will be wrapped up by 7.45pm. Sign up here for the first one this Thursday.

  • GoodGym Social: It's next Thursday 8th Feb at the Square Pig in Holborn, 6.30pm. We can revel in our successful January Challenge results - see you there! Sign up here.

  • King's Sport Rave Runs: A women only event on the last Wednesday of every month, 7-9pm from London Bridge Gym - first one is tomorrow, you can sign up here.

  • Love Running Strava Challenge: Spend an hour running in the two weeks before Valentines day to win the Love Running badge. Find out more here.

  • Mini marathon trial mission: Help out at this event for the athletes of the future! If you would like to help out here but haven't had your DBS check done, then let's get it done this week - just email me!

  • There are still places available for the Big Half: At just £10 a pop, you can enter the Big Half with GoodGym. It's taking place on 4th March and you can find out more info here.

After all that news it was about time we headed out on the run - with Nina and Bryony back-marking we made our way down embankment and over Blackfriars Bridge, waving to a cheerful runner in a GoodGym top as he strode by. We stopped off to do a squat hold and some step-ups on the way over, but that didn't slow us down and we made it to the nursery very quickly.

The task: We met the very cheerful Lynnsey at the nursery and she split us up into 3 teams. 1 group tackled cutting out some flyers to put into jars, another took on the tricky task of filming the windows in the newly decorated baby room, and the final group headed to the kitchen hallway to clean some walls and re-shelve some storage. With lots of work to do we got cracking straight away. It took a while to work out how to re-shelve the kitchen storage, but with all our GoodGym minds put together we figured it out just in time and managed to raise all the shelves up before we had to leave. The group filming the windows had a big task as they had to make sure the windows were perfectly clean before measuring and cutting the film to size and sticking it to the window - I'm sure the nursery kids will love the work we did in there! With all the jars filled, 2 windows filmed, kitchen hallway cleaned and storage re-shelved, we waved goodbye to Lynnsey and the nursery and ran back to King's.

We arrived back with 5 minutes to spare - just enough time to squeeze in some hill sprints on Surrey Street! We focused on making sure the front of the foot made contact with the floor first, pumping our arms and keeping our torsos upright.

Fab running everyone! Join me next week for some more fun, games, running and doing good!

Pasta 'n' planks

King's College London Report written by Alyx Murray-Jackman

Tonight we visited the Sainsbury's by Warren Street Station to pack up their food collections for the amazing charity Rhythms of Life, who feed and educate the homeless. We also managed to run about 6km and get in lots of sprints, squats and lunges in the process.

Tonight we had a whopping five new runners - Bryony, Annie, Hannah, Sarah and Amy - these people all decided for the first time to use their run tonight to do some good, so I think they deserve a cheer, don't you?! We told them all about missions and coach runs which are great ways to get involved in the community on a more personal level, and really see the difference you can make to someone's life first hand.

We also found out that GoodGym have some Big Half entries for just £10! GoodGym are also putting on some Big Half specific starter sessions where you can get help with your training and advice on your running technique (plus you get to do a good deed too!) - you can see if any fit with your schedule here.

After this big intro we had to get started with our evening run sharpish, so we headed out onto the terrace for a warm up overlooking the Thames, before heading North through central London on a 3km run. At every other set of traffic lights we stopped to do some squats and lunges, and even had an elderly man join us for our squat jumps.

The task: We arrived at Sainsbury's with time to spare, so while we waited for them to get the boxes ready for us to pack the food into, we did a speedy fitness session right outside. We worked on our legs, our glutes and also managed to sneak in a little arm exercise (a muscle group that runners often forget about). With the ever increasing strange looks from customers getting a bit overbearing we made our way inside to pack the food collections into boxes, ready for the charity to pick up in the morning. Once in boxes, and while we waited for the manager to show us where to put them, we took over the pasta aisle with some very well formed planking action - great work on the fitness for this run, team!

On the run back we practiced some sprinting techniques, focussing on backwards arm drive and positioning ourselves upright.

Tonight was one of the strangest evenings of our lives, but it was certainly entertaining - see you next week for some more running and doing good.

Vintage People

King's College London Report written by Alyx Murray-Jackman

Tonight we visited the YMCA Shop by Goodge Street to help them sort through some of their vintage and new donations. It was a 5km round trip, so we got lots of miles under our belts to get even further past our January target of 100km, which we had already surpassed before tonight’s group run took place!

We welcomed a new runner for their first ever group run - Hannah – don’t you think she has earned a cheer?!

After some brief introductions, and with a busy central London run ahead of us, we set off quickly for a night of running and doing good!

The task: We made our way up past Covent Garden and Fitzrovia until we got to Goodge Street, where we were greeted by Usukh at the YMCA Charity Shop. She showed us where they stored all their donations and split us up into groups to complete all the different tasks she has prepared. We had one group checking CDs and DVDs for scratches, one hanging all the new clothing donations onto hangers, and one lucky group tidying up the shop floor, and choosing new attire for the mannequins. Whilst singing a little bit of YMCA - Village People (you can enjoy it too, below), we got all our tasks done!

On the run back we practiced some sprinting techniques, focussing on that backwards arm drive, and warming up all those leg muscles.

Tonight was great fun - see you next week, when we will be helping out an awesome charity who feed and educate the homeless. We’ll be packing up some of their food collections into boxes for easy transportation!

Spruce-ing up the place

King's College London Report written by Alyx Murray-Jackman

We had so many fresh faces on our run this week - Marina, Stephanie, Glen and Gabriele - give these people a cheer everyone!

Did you know that we have a GoodGym-wide challenge happening this month? We want to get to 5000 good deeds and 50,000kms run across the whole of GoodGym in January. Our run tonight has currently put us in the lead of our division. However to keep our lead we do need to keep racking up the good deeds and those miles, so make sure you link your Strava and GoodGym profiles together and go out for some training runs, or ask me about getting DBS checked so you can get involved in some missions!

After find out what GoodGym is all about, welcoming all our newcomers, and meeting David - our Guest from Bristol - we locked up our bags and went outside for a warm up. We discussed what everyone wants to have made happen by the end of the year and with lots of answers to do with running we headed out into the cold night!

With some excellent back marking from Amy, we headed out over Blackfriars Bridge and made it to Blackfriars Settlement in record time.

The task: We met some of the awesome people working at the Centre and they gave us a brief history about the place - it was originally a women's university settlement, set up in 1887! They then set us to work in three groups - The pine-eers, Fairy's on top and Feeling pine. Each group had their own Christmas tree to take down, and it was a race to see who could get all the decorations off and packed into boxes, plus get the tree wrapped up, first. Fairy's on top were the over-all winners and they even managed to take down all the decorations in the stairwell too.

Once finished we split into two groups for the run back. The sexy and steady group were led by Dom, and the (after much consideration) stupid and speedy group were led back by me. Sexy and steady set off first, and the other group then tried to catch up with them on the run back. We didn't make it however, and so sexy and steady won the race! With a few minutes to spare we did some core work back at base to make sure we have good posture when running.

Great running!

See you next week when we will be sorting donations for the YMCA charity shop.
