Shelter is a registered charity that campaigns to end homelessness and bad housing in the UK.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, they did a call for donations that can be sent to their charity shops for free. This is something GoodGym Barnet (and beyond) can help with.
Right now, Shelter are especially in need of:
• premium quality branded or designer clothes, shoes, and accessories
• jewellery, either modern or vintage
• ornaments or collectibles, either modern or vintage
Details on how to post your donations can be found on this link: https://england.shelter.org.uk/support_us/shops/donate_to_a_shelter_shop/pack_and_post
You can send your lovely pictures from your good deed to me and I will put everything together into a nice report. You can use the following email address: firstname.lastname@example.org
Goodgym Barnet are looking to help develop several small protected plantings of trees through Barnet. ( A Micro Forest)
A Micro Forest is a dense and rapidly growing native woodland in a small area. It will provide a protected habitat for wildlife, capture carbon, filter the air of harmful particulates and reduce flooding and soil loss.
Besides these important local effects, it is symbolic of our need to protect our wider environment and it is hoped it will provide an education and emotional engagement of our community. It’s also something that we will have to physically nurture as a group. Its a great fit for Goodgym!
The Council is interested in the project but we need as many people as possible to support the idea. For the moment please register your interest here and we will keep you up-to-date with what is happening as a rolling community mission. If you have ideas about how to promote this to the community please also get in touch. We want schools, community groups, artisans, news media and others to get involved.
Thanks to Daniel Mermelstein for introducing the idea to Goodgym Barnet.
If you are interested in helping through this scheme please register here and tell us through the comments below how you got on so that others can be encouraged.
The Covid-19 vaccination programme is underway and as part of the Boroughs response to Covid-19, Volunteering Barnet is supporting local GP surgeries and pharmacies across Barnet to recruit and deploy much needed volunteers to support the roll out of the Covid-19 vaccine to members of the public.

Long Lane Pasture is a 1.1 hectare nature reserve in Finchley in the London Borough of Barnet. It is owned by Barnet Council and managed by the Long Lane Pasture Trust. The council does not contribute any funds to the Trust. The trust relies on local volunteers and under a management plan agreed with the council, the site is managed to protect its wildlife value and maintain and enhance its biodiversity. There is access by a footpath from Long Lane immediately north of the North Circular Road.
Coldfall Wood is a fascinating area of ancient woodland covering 14 hectares.
