Painting and building furniture at Building Futures East

Sun 27 Sep 10:30 am
Building Futures East, Low Yard, White St, Newcastle, NE6 3PJ
Get a community project up and ready to go

You're going to love this one!

Our friends at Building Futures East have requested volunteers to come and support as they set up their Stitch Sisters project space- this will be a training course from women in the East End to develop skills in sewing and get back into work.

It’s a large space and there’ll be some painting and decorating as well as putting up and organising furniture to be done.

We will be at this task all day from 10:30-3:30pm but please don't feel you have to stay for the whole thing. Louise will be looking after the task in the morning, and Anji in the afternoon. Come along and spend as much time as you like on this great task.

IMPORTANT: The postcode on this task takes you to the car park at the top. When you arrive, walk down the hill where you will see a large double decker bus and turn right for the main building. Drop a message on the Facebook page if you need help when you arrive.

Volunteer. Food bank. We do what it says with the tins!

Thu 24 Sep
Report written by Louise Laws

It was good to be back helping at East End Women's food bank today after missing it for the last three weeks! I joined Eleanor and Michael and as we're all regulars at the task we were able to get straight on with the usual tasks of packing bags and sorting the already packed bags for today's volunteer drivers, ready to be distributed to people in need in Walker. We did find ourselves a couple of extra tasks today. We encountered a leaking milk carton so Eleanor got to work cleaning the crates, trolley and the other food items in the bag. Later we hit a lull, partly as the stocks are unfortunately rather low at the moment so we couldn't pack any more bags - so I resorted to a bit of hoovering! Hopefully the supplies will be replenished soon so we're kept busy when we're back (hopefully!) next week!

Weekly task with East End Women food bank

Thu 24 Sep 11:00 am
Building Futures East, Low Yard, White St, Newcastle, NE6 3PJ
Help a brilliant charity doing amazing things!

East End Women is a Community Programme that helps Women in the North East to achieve their potential.

Each week they deliver over 1 TONNE of food to local people in Walker which is amazing! This is equivalent to 2520 meals.

Thursday is their large delivery day and they would absolutely love our help, with a variety of tasks including lifting, bagging up and general organisation. This is currently completed by one person which is a lot of hard work, and they would really appreciate some extra hands.

Sproud of our hard work!

Thu 17 Sep
Report written by Lauren Mc Elwaine

Today Eleanor and I headed back to East End Women's foodbank for our weekly mission with this great organisation. We had a busy start, with 5 delivery drivers arriving to pick up their food parcels within the first 30 minutes. This equated to 132 bags of food!! Luckily we had one of the lovely staff members, Rebecca, to help us with the toiletries! After the crazy start, we had a bit more time to pack the 48 ambient food bags and get the next orders ready for collection. With about 20 bags left to pack, the supply of regular milk ran out so we moved on to 'sproud', a pea protein plant alternative milk! To finish off, we restocked the tables in the supply room.

Another enjoyable task at the foodbank!

Scare-way to heaven

Wed 16 Sep
Report written by Anji Andrews

In a weird twist of fate we ended up at Recyke Y Bike tonight, as well as being there for a group run a year ago tonight!

There was a great turnout for this popular community mission. Tom and Lauren took charge of sweeping the huge workshop, Aimee and Louise took charge of some wallpapering while everyone else went up the (scary) stairs to do some painting in the offices above.

It was a brilliant hour spent doing a job that will really make a difference.

Well done!
