Agents of deterioration: BadGym edition

Greenwich Report written by Rachel Henry

This report has started with a lie. We are definitely not BadGym (especially as we did two good deeds tonight) and this report may be taken down for besmirching the GoodGym name.

So, 11 of us gathered in the dusk outside Charlton House and in honour of World Mental Health Day on Monday we each shared one way we take care of our mental health. From cooking to mindfulness to spending time in a Buddhist centre, we were left inspired by each other, before warming up with a slightly stressful shark attack game. We had a couple of stealth sharks who didn't identify themselves and some proper sprinting which was pretty much jaws dropping.

On our way to Kidbrooke we did some leafletting for Charlton House's Horn Fair this Sunday which we were told had a rather debauched history...true enough, as Wikipedia reliably informs me, "The 18th-century fair was infamous for its debauchery, and was discontinued in 1872."

Arriving at the centre, Mat took us inside for a little tour of one of the rooms storing over 1000 paintings in their hospital. Mat gave a very interesting overview and we pulled out some of the paintings to hear their stories. I bet you didn't know that your hands are actually 'agents of deterioration.' Yeah, if that's not unsettling enough we could talk about that little gem we learnt that eating a heart will keep you alive for a good while on a desert island.

After a fascinating 15 minutes we thought we should get to work and earn the supposed good in our name. We moved and sanded down some pallets of good strong wood which paintings are transported in that the centre want to repurpose into planting beds for local people, otherwise they'd end up being thrown out.

A nice run back to Charlton House and we were done for the night - great job gang. Tomorrow we've got volunteering at Charlton Parkrun and a litter pick and Sunday we're at Ballast Quay for some sweeping. Otherwise, see you next week for our run and social!

Give it your Al(bany)

Lewisham Report written by Kim Parker

The first thing I noticed when writing the run report (other than the fantastic pun from Oli) was that it's officially blurry dark photos time!

It was fantastic to see lots of red tshirts gathering outside Glass Mill, some new faces (welcome Pete), some guests from Greenwich and the usual suspects. After a big congrats to our London Marathon runners and a warm up of rock paper scissors, the version that no one is really a winner, we were on our way to The Albany to tackle the litter around the perimeter of the garden space and to tackle some of the weeds in the pavement cracks.

We split into two groups, one group grabbing tools to begin weeding and the other headed into the darkness for the litter pick.

The litter did not disappoint, we ended up with 6 bin bags full of an assortment of litter including a broken record, part of a car, a lot of glass bottles, a lot of chicken shop wrappers, single shoes and a broken litter picker!

Before we knew it, it was time to be heading out and off into the darkness to start our run back to Glass Mill. Thanks to The Albany for having us, we'll be back again to tackle more jobs in the garden.

I've listed a social at the beginning of November and also the Christmas (in November) on the last Friday of the month.

If you'd like to join our whatsapp group then just give me a shout and I'll add you.

Need for Speed

Lewisham Report written by Kim Parker

GoodGymers assembled and ready to tackle the hills up to Seniors (minus one who thought he'd missed us and sprinted to catch us up, only to find we were 5min behind him), last night we were celebrating 100 good deeds - well done Adam, go give him a cheer. And my 300 good deeds. We've had a 500 recently - well done Marta.

With our marathon runners giving their legs a well earned rest, we headed off to Seniors. There were a couple of tasks for the evening:

  • turning the compost heap
  • moving the rubbish from the basement to the bins outside
  • cleaning the bus hotel

Unfortunately the lady in charge of the bug hotel hadn't turned up yet so that task will wait for another GoodGym visit. We got stuck into the other 2 tasks and completed them in about 15min!! Talk about speedy!

I think it took longer for us to assemble for the group photo and move the coat rail that was in the way.

We said our goodbyes and headed off up the hill to be treated with the view across London from Blythe Hill Fields and then enjoyed the downhill back to Glass Mill.

Fantastic work tonight everyone, you all smashed the longer run and the hills!
