Paint 'n' Pizza

Mon 6 Dec
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

On a brisk Monday evening, Area Activator Simon and Annikki run together to Caxton House Community Centre from Elizabeth House Food Hub near Blackstock Road, Islington. 2 miles covered on route, passing residential neighbourhoods and streets full of tasteful (and slightly more gaudy) Christmas lights!

Upon arrival, we made our way upstairs to meet Rose and Sue, the volunteer coordinators of the project. Our task this week was to continue painting the interiors of a new sewing and textiles room- hopefully accessible to visitors early 2022. Last week, we successfully laid down a base layer, and this week, Alison, Caitlin and Annikki applied the finishing touches and lined the edges with smaller, finer brushes. Very satisfying work!

In the main room, Steve and Emily, our resident master flat pack builders, continued their project of constructing 4 large moving cabinets for the community centre. After a difficult first attempt last time (locating fiddly bolts and attachments is always a challenge!), our duo did a smashing job building these from scratch!

We wrapped up our evening of activities after a solid 45 minutes of assistance, and set off into the night. AA Simon and Steve ran the approx 2 miles back to Elizabeth House together, using some of Steve's knowledge of local backstreets near Seven Sisters Road (a useful contact for efficient running in Islington!), and enjoyed some refreshments and pizza at the Bank of Friendship pub as part of our monthly social.

Great job everyone! We will be heading to Thornhill Square Gardens next week. See you then!

Base layers for painting base layers

Mon 29 Nov
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

On Monday evening, 4 of our Goodgym Islington crew braved the zero degrees temperature outdoors, and joined Area Activator Simon for a run up to Caxton House Community Centre (approx 1.2 miles from the Emirates Stadium). After raising our heart rates with a warm up and a brisk run across the borough, we met up with the rest pf our team (on bikes or walking from home) outside the main entrance. Sue and Rose, the main volunteer coordinators for Caxton House lead us upstairs (after we masked up- thank you all for bringing face coverings for our indoor task!) and explained the proceedings for the session.

We split our Goodgymmers up into 2 groups. Group 1 (Alison, Emily, Caitlin and Annikki) were the main painting team tonight, who got straight to covering the walls of a newly refurbished sewing room. This week, our plan was to apply a base layer of white paint (after our sanding and wall cleaning task a few weeks back), and we hope to do more next week. Between our 4 painters, we got about 80% of the room covered in 45 minutes, which is a pretty remarkable effort!

Group 2 (Steve and Marie Laure) took on the technical challenge of constructing a tall metal shelving unit out of flat pack furniture. This was no easy feat- simply locating the right screws, bolts and fixings was a trick start! But the structure took shape over the last 10-15 minutes, and we were able to finish our session with a new piece of equipment set up and ready to use!

Fantastic work everyone. Very satisfying to see a plan come together! If you would like to join us to help complete our painting next week, feel free to sign up here:

FROGGspotting

Gloves and jacket weather has begun!

Area Activator Simon met up with Steve, Eilidh and Dee at the Arsenal Community Hub on a crisp, slightly chilly Monday evening. After a chat and a warm-up, our team run up to Grenville Gardens (a super straight line covering 1.2 miles up Hornsey Road), passing the Hornsey Baths illuminations on route. Upon arrival, we met up with the rest of our Goodgym crew, who had run, cycled and walked from other locations, and with Sarah, the key coordinator for all Friends of Grenville Gardens projects.

Our objective this evening was a continuation of our previous group run session task, when we broke apart a collection of old rotten planter boxes. A large pile of fresh compost had been donated to Grenville Gardens, and we distributed the new material throughout the three main flower patches in the gardens, using wheelbarrows, buckets, tubs and spades. The plan is to give the flowers an extra layer of fertiliser throughout the winter months.

We made a smashing effort within 40 minutes of help, and our crew covered every area of the flower beds very efficiently! Local passersbys inquired about what we were up to (a busy group of red t-shirted folks in running kit and headtorches, digging and gardening at night!), and were thrilled with our assistance in their community gardens.

Wonderful evening of Goodgym fun, folks! See you same time next week for our next group run to Caxton House Community Centre!

Creative CREOS

Sun 21 Nov
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

The Goodgym crew were invited back to Crouch End Open Space again this Sunday, to help the Friends of CREOS with an ambitious winter project. 6 runners, walkers and cyclists from all different Goodgym boroughs (including Shona who was participating in her first GG session- welcome!) joined the regular volunteer team at the Hanley Tennis Courts car park. Glenys, the main coordinator for the task, showed us all the way to the forest paths, linking Crouch End and Highgate, and explained about their plans to strengthen the footpaths over the winter months, ready for the year ahead.

10 large bags of building aggregate had been dropped off at the car park, ready for our full group of approximately 10-12 volunteers to distribute evenly along the paths. Throughout the session, we shared roles between shoveling the material, and wheelbarrowing the aggregate along the footways leading to CREOS meadow. Meanwhile, we took it in turns to play ball with an adorable dog (owned by one of the volunteers) whenever we needed to take a break (the puppy never tired out!). It was truly a team effort, and we successfully shifted almost 8 full bags within 2 hours!

We downed tools, and returned the barrows, rakes and shovels to a neighbouring garden shed. Upon our return, we were met with an amazing picnic spread- hot parsnip soup, cheeses, bread, snacks and cider was all on offer after a solid mid-mornings effort!

If you would like to join us for our next CREOS session, we have 2 more Sunday community missions listed:

Crouch End Open Space (CREOS) Volunteering Day (November 2021)- New Hoggin Day!

Sun 21 Nov 11:00 am
Hanley Tennis Club Car Park, Greenways,, London, N8 8JJ
Our monthly woodland regeneration session with the CREOS volunteering team

Join us as we help the team at CREOS, a local conservation charity, maintain and improve a lovely green oasis in Crouch End.

CREOS looks after the meadows and wooded pathways of the Crouch End Open Space. GoodGym runners have been helping them maintain this beautiful patch of land for a while now, and the CREOS team always has lots for us to do.

This month, the CREOS team are planning on playing down a load of hoggin (a mix of hardy sand, clay and gravel aggregate) for new paths along the forest walking routes. It will be a big job, so we can use as many hands as possible!

We'll meet for an 11am start and aim to work for two hours. Stay as long as you can... but if you can make it to 1pm you'll get to enjoy a picnic* provided by the CREOS team. (Though this may be contingent on the weather!)

During the Winter months, we will be meeting at the Hanley Tennis Court Car Park, accessible via the Green Ways walk from Wood Vale.

All roads lead to the Rose Bowl

Mon 1 Nov
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

On Monday evening, 4 Goodgymmers ran down to the Arsenal Community Hub for our first official winter time group run. Area Activator Simon, Alfie, Victoria and Annikki (on her 2nd task- welcome!) performed a warm up on the Benwell Road slope (up towards the Emirates Stadium), before setting off on a really pleasant social run through Highbury Fields and Canonbury. On the way, we spotted leftover Halloween pumpkins (or "Jack-o'-lanterns" as Victoria refers to them!) and the first Christmas lights up on display. Our destination (after 1.5 miles running) was the Rose Bowl Youth Centre, where we caught up with the lovely Dawn, the local volunteer coordinator.

3 main activities were available for us this time. Group 1 (Victoria and Annikki) helped with cutting out some over grown tree branches around the entrance of the centre, using saws and long clippers. Our intention was to keep the twigs from scratching visitors on their way onto the property. The branches were then chopped down into really small clippings, for Islington Council to safely remove later in the week.

Group 2 (Paul and Anne) picked up brushes and sweepers, and set their targets on clearing almost all of the fallen leaves off the main playground area, where youth groups and local clubs frequently play. The plan was to reduce the potential for slipping hazards where possible, and our duo did a smashing job over course of 45 minutes.

Alfie volunteered to help with a classic moving and shifting task, which involved taking a full room of donated food bank supplies from one location, and over to a safe storage cupboard. Lots of canned goods and non-perishable items in large quantities- quite a workout! Some of these supplies also needed to be stock rotated too, arranged by expiration date, and discarded where necessary.

We finished our evening with another jog back to Drayton Park (a slight variation on our original route), and a few of us enjoyed some refreshments at the Highbury Library bar for our monthly group social. Great job everyone!
