Drop A Door Run

Liverpool Report written by Char Binns

The perfect 10 runners ran 5km, completing a task supporting Central Youth Club - in record time!

Liverpool's youth clubs are over-stretched and under-resourced, so here at GoodGym Liverpool we do what we can to help them out whenever we can. Central Youth Club is just north of the city in Kensington and is a newbie friendly distance to run. While residents of London's Kensington have a life expectancy of 83 years old, in Liverpool's Kenny resident's can hope to make it to the average expectancy of just 70 years old. Yep, that's a staggering 13 years difference!

We've helped out at Central Youth Club an number of times, working to tidy up their facilities. The task this time was a bit different - they needed GoodGym to deliver the centre's newsletter to local homes. Always keen to help fight stereotypes about young people, we were glad to take the task.

With 200 leaflets to deliver, the team made super fast work of it, with a little bit of healthy competition adding to the speed.

Everyone was brilliant tonight but special kudos to Rowan who led their team to victory. And of course a HUGE shout out and massive well done to Mat who came clad in his new black GG tee after clocking up a mighty 50 good deeds.

Once all the newsletters had been delivered we ran back to the youth centre and made use of their floodlit Astroturf pitch. After a not-the-most-fun sort of task, I treated the team to a silly game rather than a hard workout, which we called "The best runners...". I have a feeling we'll be playing it again soon.

Well done you top ten!

Next week is week one of two when we'll be clearing flower beds at Jubliee Sports Bank. Bring your headtorches and your gloves and get signed-up here.

Until then, happy running <3

Chinese Pew Year!

Liverpool Report written by Char Binns

It was another record-breaking week at GoodGym Liverpool with 23 versatile runners doing heavy lifting and delicate lantern making at the Bombed Out Church.

GoodGym Liverpool has developed a fab working relationship with the city's iconic cultural destination the Bombed Out Church. With a skeleton staff but an enormous building to care for, the team at the church really has their hands full. Luckily we visit regularly to help carry some of the weight - literally!

In late November we visited the site and lifted 6 enormously heavy pews out of the church ahead of their winter wonderland set-up. Now in January, the pews needed moving back in. Lots of strong people jumped into action, with the pews needing at least 6 people carrying each in order to distribute the huge weight.

Meanwhile, the rest of the team went down to the crypt and began lifting big plastic drums out into the main part of the church. They were starting the set-up for the city's upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations. Liverpool has the oldest Chinese community in Europe and New Years celebrations are taken seriously here, with the Bombed Out Church as a focal point.

With more heavy lifting going on outside, the team in the crypt began putting together Chinese lanterns (in GoodGym red) in their hundreds. Our own Chinese team member Yan was pretty excited about this task - check out her smiling with the lanterns in the photos.

It was great to welcome five newbies this week. Well done Rowan, Effie, Alison, Katerina and Holly - you did great and you're welcome to run with us anytime.

A HUGE congratulations, well done and thank you to Pauline who became the first GG Liverpool runner to make it to 50 good deeds over the weekend. Can't wait to see her rocking her black t-shirt soon.

January Challenge update: After tonight, we've clocked 58 good deeds and gone into first place on our leader board. But our closest rivals GoodGym Ealing have their Group Runs on Tuesday so our lead will be short lived. Keep an eye on the [upcoming runs page] for details of Community Missions over the weekend and to sign-up to next week's Group Run to help us go that extra mile.

Thanks for being brilliant tonight. I'm off on my jollies for a few days but George will look after you next Monday so make sure you go along and support him.

Oh and I'll be keeping an eye on your Strava accounts while I'm away ;) See you soon, Char <3

P.S. Kudos to Katie for the report run pun.

Pew Raise Me Up

Liverpool Report written by Char Binns

16 strong runners lifted their way to success following a short run to the Bombed Out Church.

After a last minute change of plan, we were excited to be invited back to Liverpool's iconic Bombed Out Church for another challenging but worthwhile task. Even by winding through all of the back-streets of the city's Georgian Quarter, the run to the task is hardly a workout. But the task facing the runners on site, more than made up for the short run, provider a tough fitness session.

After a tour of the space and a look around the Liver Bird room where the list of 3,000 Liverpudlians killed in the Blitz is poignantly displayed, Director Ambrose put us to work. The church is set to be transformed into a winter wonderland over the coming weeks, but in order to complete the job, five extraordinarily heavy church pews needed moving out of the building and carrying around the side. The runners soon jumped to action, with some first class team work involved in carrying and manoeuvring these enormous benches.

It is difficult to chose who to give a shout out to this week as everyone did an amazing job, but I have to give a mention to GoodGym super tourist Debbie - thanks for visiting us and I hope we set a new benchmark (geddit!) in welcoming you to our team. It was also fab to have returner runner Richard back to lend some muscle.

As well as shifting the pews, the team also moved a pile of very heavy stones AND even had time to put up a gazebo and do some sweeping. Are this lot heroes of what?!

Although they'd certainly done plenty of upper body strength work in the task, I was keen to get their heart rates up before the end of the session. So we headed to the Catholic Cathedral and ran drills up the steps, with bonus squats and star jumps. Phew!

Next week is a festive special when we're heading to the Liverpool Irish Centre to hang decorations. As well as your #RedThunder t-shirts, you're strongly encouraged to bring a little Christmas cheer to your running kit - I'll leave that to your imaginations... Sign-up here.

Until then, keeeeeep running <3

GG Lpool: Sweeping The Floor With The Competition

Liverpool Report written by Char Binns

Our terrific 12 completed a small run to a big task at Liverpool's iconic Bombed Out Church.

Returning from my jollies, I resumed my role of GG Lpool Trainer with equal amounts of cheer and jet lag, making my red-clad team a true sight for sore eyes!

Liverpool's Bombed Out Church is an iconic building in the centre of the city, that is managed by a team of just 2 staff. We've helped them out in the past and always enjoyed the experience, so it was great to return. What's more, the run to the task is less than 1km (even when I take the team the long route!) all down hill. What's not to love?!

We were greeted by Ambrose and a room full of brooms, with our task to clean the stairs and external area 360 degrees around the church. The church steps are often used as a meeting place, a spot to eat takeaway food and to smoke a cigarette. As such, there was an awful lot of debris that needed clearing.

The whole team did a brooming good job, but a special shout out to Chanetelle and Sam (aka Team Wheelbarrow) for bravely dealing with some of the more suspect items and areas of mess around the building. #heroes

Also a huge welcome and nice one to newbies Lorna and Mille - you both did great and are super welcome to join us again anytime.

With the area around the church transformed, we ran back up the hill to the base of the Metropolitan Cathedral where the team split into three and ran drills, went up steps and completed conditioning exercises. A huge well done and thank you to everyone - you did grrrrreat!

Next week is another newbie-friendly session (2km each direction) to Central Youth Club where we'll be cleaning their astroturf pitch before another fun fitness session. Don't forget to sign-up and bring a friend!

Until next time, happy running! Char <3
