Rooting around for lumber

With Mark enjoying a well deserved holiday, five GoodGymers went for an adventure of our own to a new task at Crystal Palace Museum. The Museum building stands next to a surviving base of one of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's large water towers that fed water to the park, and they'd like to restore it so that it can join the trunk the museum experience. There was a lot of foliage inside that needed clearing, which is where our branch of GoodGym came in.

We set off on a planned ~2km run around the northeast side of the park, but, wood you believe it, the tear down from the Wireless Festival at the weekend was still ongoing, requiring us to loop back down to the bottom and up the south side of the park to get to the museum. Our question of the week was "Have you walked up a hill worse than Anerley Hill?", and Claire told us about her childhood home up a very, very steep hill!

Once we arrived, we got to work moving all from logs to twigs out of the overgrown tower and into the yard, building our production line with Alex and Holly inside the tower moving plant matter out to the entrance tunnel, and myself, Nick and Claire moving it out and down the narrow path. Claire's driving skills with the excess loads on the wheelbarrow were top notch, whilst Nick brought out his inner lumberjack, carrying some seriously heavy looking timber without a sweat!

After a solid 40 minutes of clearing the space out, we said our goodbyes to the Museum, hoping that our work would help them turn another new leaf in the restoration, and took a much more direct route down the Park back to the Bridge House.

Well done, team!

Group Run // Clearing out The Water Tower!

Tue 5 Jul 19:00 pm
Bridge House, 2 High St, London, SE20 8RZ
At Crystal Palace Museum

Mark isn't here this week so Stephen's going to lead our run to support the Crystal Palace Museum!

It's not too far, so the run will be a loop of the park before going to the museum for some clearing out of the South Water Tower Base. I'm assured there's plenty of stuff to be moved out so it'll be a busy 30 mins of activity (and we might even have to do a return session...). The run will be around 4km in total!

Hope you can make it!

Cabinet Meeting

Tue 28 Jun
β€’
Report written by Mark Gilyead

Last night’s task was at a bustling Anerley Town Hall where we definitely got some funny looks from the martial arts masters… We were there to support the Crystal Palace Community Trust who run activities at the building, with some clearing out of a room in the basement.

Wood you rather?

James showed us our task, emptying two sides of a room and putting all the junk by the bins ready to be taken away. First up came some big wooden display boards of varying sizes. They were pretty awkward to manoeuvre but we got there in the end.

3 X table

Next up came several long tables which we got up the stairs and out onto the pile. Team work made the dream work, navigating the stairs as a 2 before 1 person took it the rest of the way.

Rolling green

Next up came what was possibly some kind of portable bowling green all rolled up. It took all 3 of us to shift it around the corners and up the stairs.

There were a few bags with things from boots to baubles to snooker balls which Catherine mostly handled.

Then came the finale…

The Three Dustketeers!

Alex did a cracking job getting a huge old filing cabinet half way up the stairs and just so he didn’t tear a muscle, we helped drag it the rest of the way.

Ace job gang! And a solid post-task outdoor gym sesh.πŸ‘Œ

Group Run // Clearing out a basement room

Tue 28 Jun 19:00 pm
Bridge House, 2 High St, London, SE20 8RZ
For Crystal Palace Community Trust

This week we're running to Anerley Town Hall (it's a 2km run) to move all the items from a basement room upstairs and into another room! A great chance for a whole body workout and it should be a quick job.

It might be worth bringing gardening gloves in case there are some heavy/awkward items but I'll have a few pairs with me.

We'll do some kind of fitness game on the way back πŸ’ͺπŸ˜‰

Hope you can make it!

I Can't Bee-Leaflet It!

Tue 21 Jun

Report written by Mark Gilyead

Five fantastic GoodGymers met at the Bridge House on the longest day of the year for a trip to the awesome Ignition Brewery in Sydenham. Ignition provides training and employment for people with learning disabilities to make and serve beer (and now ice cream... read on...) 🍦

We welcomed Catherine who was with us for her first GG Bromley run πŸŽ‰ and discussed which actor would play each of us in our biopic (with quality actors favoured over look-a-likes). After a quick warm up in the park we trundled over to Ignition.

After a couple of task changes, Richard asked us to pop some flyers through some letterboxes. Ignition has a monthly market coming up as well as a beer delivery service and it's good to spread the word about their fab work.

Clare and Catherine handled the west side of the high street whilst Alex and Sam went on the east side "Thorpes" roads, and I stayed back with Richard to put together some new tables they have for out the front of the taproom.

On everyone's return, completely flyer-less, and with Sam sporting a fresh bee sting πŸ˜”, Richard gave us a sample of some of Ignition's new ice cream. Mango or pistachio gelato πŸ˜‹

On the run back, we had a quick game of Squat, Squat, Goose and then stuck around for a post-run pint!

Ace stuff everyone!

Group Run // Planting shrubs and flyering for Ignition Brewery

Tue 21 Jun 19:00 pm
Bridge House, 2 High St, London, SE20 8RZ
& POST-RUN DRINK

CHANGE OF PLAN! We're going to head to Ignition to get their secret garden in shape. And as there aren't loads of tools, a group of us will head off to flyer some nearby houses.

We'll reward ourselves with a beverage at the Bridge House afterwards.

Hope you can make it!

Saving the Holly for the Holly-days

Tue 31 May
β€’
Report written by Mark Gilyead

Today's task was all about the holly and the ivy, and more specifically saving the holly from the ivy.

We kicked off at the Bridge House announcing our Jubilee celebration plans - nothing that notable tbh... And then we hit the road, praying the rain wouldn't come down.

We were headed to St John's church. They've got a lovely meadow area which feeds bees and even has some produce growing for locals who want to get involved.

Hail No!

We got lucky and arrived dry as a bone. Sara explained our task - the ivy was starting to choke the holly, so get rid of the ivy around the holly, but not all of the ivy... because it still looks nice.

Armed with secateurs and many black bags we cracked on.

Ivy the Terrible

We had a solid 35 minutes of pulling and trimming and bagging. It was surprisingly therapeutic (and a good workout on the old guns). We had a few filthy finds - Maxim's "Red Bull" won the stink prize.

Baa Baa Black Sack - 15 bags full

Now the holly will be safe for a little while and it may even get some use in the church's Nativity services at Christmas?!

Still dry, we took a quick snap and headed back to base.

Nice one gang πŸ’₯

Tidying up THE MOUND

Tue 31 May 19:00 pm
Bridge House, 2 High St, London, SE20 8RZ
@ St John's Meadow

The Mound sounds fairly ominous but I'm assured it's just a lovely bank of plants that needs some attention.

🌱 There may be some ivy pulling up

πŸ—‘ And there's a bit of litter picking required

It's a 2km run each way and we'll have some fitness exercises thrown in. πŸ’ͺ

Please bring gardening gloves if you have them (I have a few spare pairs).

Hope you can make it!
