Moving rocks and weeding at Rowntree Park

Mon 15 Aug 18:15 pm
York CVS, Denham Room, 15 Priory Street , York , YO1 6ET
Supporting the development of the wildlife area

Welcome to GoodGym York πŸ™Œ

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒWe're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. Every Monday we meet to get active and do a physical task to help the charities or community organisations in our city.

TONIGHT'S TASK πŸ™Œ We've been asked to move lots of heavy rocks, from the Reading Cafe to the new wildlife area. This guarantees a good workout and as it's a little bit of a trek from one end of the park to the other, we'll probably work in pairs, in case you need to swap barrowing arms halfway! The rocks will be going to the new wildlife area, which is very exciting! For anyone that doesn't fancy the heavy lifting (or perhaps would like to have a break from it!), there is weeding to be done on the cafe balcony. (This can only be done on an evening so it's the ideal time for it.)

🧀 As we'll be lifting rocks, please bring gardening gloves if possible and don't forget to be kind to your back (lift from the knees please!). If lifting isn't your thing, we'll try and make sure there are alternative jobs available!

WHERE WE MEET πŸŽ’ We meet at the Priory Street Centre and our usual room is the Denham Room. As you approach the front of the Centre, turn right and go to the car park area. The room we use is locked whilst we're out so you can leave your bits and bobs in there.

😷 We are asking people still to wear a face mask when entering the building to drop bags off where possible.

🚲There is cycle parking as you approach the Centre and a 10 bay pay and display car park is available behind the nursery block, to the left as you approach front of the Centre. In addition, on street parking is available on Priory Street.

TONIGHT 🌱We’re heading to Greenfields Community Garden tonight to help make it a more pleasant environment for everyone who uses it.

RUNNING AND WALKING WITH US πŸ‘GoodGym is for everyone. We welcome runners of all abilities and if the task is close enough we have a walking group too.

πŸ‘We always have a back-marker too so nobody will get left behind - no matter what your pace is.

POST-RUN SOCIAL 🍻We normally head to The Ackhorne Pub on St Martin's Lane after our run for a spot of liquid refreshment and a good chat. Please join us!

Scythe spirit

This evening, a group of intrepid GoodGymmers gathered at Millenium Fields in York to help their team get the grass under control, helping create space for a wider variety of flora and fauna.

Scything grass is more wildflower friendly than many other means of cutting it, and it's jolly good fun. This article from St Nicks tells more about the value of scything.

The group put in a fantastic hour of scything, taking turns between scything, raking, and dragging the cuttings to be composted. In that time, we made quite the impact on the field - though there's plenty left to be done next week

Scything near Millenium Bridge with St Nicks

Tue 9 Aug 18:45 pm
Millenium Bridge, York, YO23 1LR
Help habitat experts tame the grass in this popular spot

GoodGym have been asked if some of us can go along to the fields by Millenium Bridge to help scythe down some of the grass to help keep it manageable.

Scything grass is more wildflower friendly than many other means of cutting it, and it's jolly good fun. This article from St Nicks tells more about the value of scything.

We'll meet at the top of Millenium Bridge (or under a tree visible from there in the event of challenging weather), then head to meet Nicola from St Nicks.

It's a popular task, and will be happening several times throughout August, so if this listing is full there may be another with space.

😁 20 brilliant GoodGymmers met on an unexpectedly warm Monday evening for our group run β˜€οΈ

πŸŽ‰ We celebrated the epic getting fit by doing good achieved over the weekend through the parkrun, three community missions and the York 10k (with plenty of socialising in between). Good work everyone πŸ’ͺ

πŸ₯³ We also celebrated Vicky's brilliant 250th good deed πŸ‘

πŸ‹οΈ We did some wall squats while naming and numbering off. In honour of the Commonwealth Games, we also heard about people's favourite sporting event to watch, including lots of Wimbledon and Athletics with the odd Crufts event thrown in for good measure πŸ•

πŸ‘» We then headed off for an exciting new task, at York Cemetery. We were greeted by Clive who gave us an introduction to the cemetery (plus our health and safety briefing). We set to work on our first task, clearing bindweed off a yew hedge in the Soldiers' Field (where many First World War soldiers from the local military hospital at Fulford were buried) πŸ₯

🎈 We also saw a big hot air balloon, which was quite cool, and sparked quite the chat about the various anxieties/perils of said mode of transport πŸ€”

🌱 This mission was swiftly accomplished and we moved on to our second area, which was particularly overgrown. We set to work clearing this area and were able to reveal four rows of graves that had been almost hidden by the undergrowth πŸ™ˆ

🌿 Max (aka "the Maxchete") developed a particularly effective technique for cutting back whilst others were raking and bagging all the cuttings, or clearing ivy from the headstones and/or trees 🌳

(🐝 Cue an interesting lesson from the incredibly knowledgeable Clive about how to "work with nature" when it comes to ivy and when/when not to clear it vs leave it for the butterflies and other wildlife πŸ¦‹)

πŸ‘€ It was very satisfactory being able to see a big difference from our tool, so much so that we just couldn't stop and some people had to be (almost) physically dragged away from it when our time was up. When we did manage to extract everyone, we dragged our laden bags to the compost area and headed to an open patch for our fitness aka many squats 😳

🎢 James (and his phone) provided the soundtrack for an (honestly not extended) version of Flower by Moby aka Sally Squats. There were some (many) moans as our legs struggled to hold the squats but some people got to the end of the song, which is an impressive achievement πŸ™Œ

*We didn't actually do any dusting but we were definitely sprucing up the area, so near enough πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

Plankety plank

Mon 1 Aug

Report written by Nicky Woodall

🌫️ 24 glorious GoodGymmers met on a mildly muggy Monday for our group run this evening, several of whom were on an impressive double good deed quest, having done a pre-group run community mission at a nearby community garden 🍈

πŸ€“ We chatted about our bumper week coming up, with many more opportunities to get fit and do good πŸ‘Œ

πŸ‘ΈπŸ€΄We named and numbered off while saying what period of history we'd have liked to have lived in, given the choice. There was much contentment with the present, dreams of the future, nostalgia for the recent past and desires to walk with dinosaurs and forage with the Romans πŸ¦•

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ Pete led the run to Greenfields Community Garden where Louise swiftly set us to work, dividing is into two groups to conquer tonight's tasks πŸ‘

πŸ₯ Some people were armed with litter-pickers to pick not litter (slightly confusingly - some people had already started doing just that as it appears to be an automatic conditioned response as a GoodGymmer, to start picking litter the moment a litter picker appears) but plums. A successful haul was gathered that will be distributed to the local community and food banks, with only a few disappearing (with permission) into GoodGym stomachs πŸ˜‹

πŸ’ͺ Meanwhile, the other group were building their arm muscles moving the compost heap from one side of the garden to the other. Some people were armed with forks, shifting the compost into wheelbarrows, which were then barrowed to the new compost heaps by the barrowers. The question of why is (almost) always good to ask of a GoodGym task and Louise was able to offer multiple explanations. Firstly, it was a good opportunity to turn the compost, which is a positive thing anyway. Secondly, there has been a recent rat infestation in the nearby streets and although Louise was confident (and our work also supported) that these weren't originating from the compost heap, it was good to be able to show this and thus maintain good relationships with the neighbours πŸ™Œ Oh, and despite the lack of rats, there was a notably huge spider uncovered, generating different emotions among nearby GoodGymmers πŸ•·οΈ

πŸ₯’ When people had finished their official tasks, Louise sent some of us on some unofficial foraging (for ripe courgettes) and/or tasting (of mulberries) missions. There were some mixed reactions to mulberries but the overall verdict was probably positive and the impromptu renditions of "Here we go round the mulberry bush" made any slight tart taste bud explosions all worthwhile 🎢

🎀 At some points, this delightful nursery rhyme was the soundtrack to tonight's fitness season (once we'd remembered the words and tune). Fitness was a mash up of plank musical chairs with the addition of the fitness dice of doom for anyone not planking plus a few cones of joy activity. I'm not entirely sure if a sense of joy or doom dominated but it was hopefully a good workout at least πŸ’ͺ

⌚ And with that, it was time to head back to base and on to the pub for many of us 🍻

πŸ‘ Thank you for some brilliant work tonight everyone, and hopefully see you at one of our other sessions this week πŸ₯³

πŸŽ‰ Credit to James S for tonight's pun.
