Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Kash
Miss K had a fluffy cat to brighten her days when the sun was behind the clouds, but on sunny afternoons her room could do with a bit more light. Unfortunately, the creeper plants outside her flat's windows would not allow that. Miss K knew that GoodGymers were sworn enemies of invasive vegetation and imported two experts from Ealing.
Sevan and Kash, after trying different approaches, chose their weapons: Sevan sturdy loppers and Kash a pair of humble secateurs. Sevan attacked the unwanted growth at the left side of the window, cutting out a curtain of lianas and leaves at the window level. Kash, on the other side, slowly advanced towards the wall, cutting through the thicket bit by bit with her tiny tool, but couldn't reach the lianas obscuring the window. Eventually, she cleared the floor of dead branches and hopped on a garden chair to unveil the view from the window.
After clearing the path for the light to reach Miss K's room and revealing a pair of Asian elephants hidden behind the jungle, Sevan reached enlightenment and abandoned the window area. He moved on to lopping the most of a tree growing from the paving slabs, then started clearing growth blocking the sun to another of Miss K's rooms.
Throughout the task, the GoodGymers kept hearing a man behind the fence crying "Lower, lower, lower!". He shouted the word about 200 times, just like he was coaching kids in football. Maybe he was coaching the GoodGymers? Kash eventually took the advice to heart and cut back the weeds that Sevan left under the window closer to the ground.
Bagging the cuttings was not a requirement, so the team could spend more time on chopping and piling up trimmings. Miss K was very pleased with the brightness that finally entered her room. Despite all the shouting "lower, lower, lower!", the mission was the highlight of the day!
