Report written by Angela Chick (she/her)
After some of the Portsmouth GoodGym team ran our local Parkrun, Tracey, Katie and Angela headed back east to join the monthly Southsea Beachwatch beach clean.
The sun was shining, and we were armed and ready. Katie had kindly brought along some reusable bags for us to put our treasures that we found in.
The Southsea Beachwatch team had some great treasures on a table and Nell took us through a quick lesson on some crustaceans she had samples of. Very interesting! Did you know there is a thing called a Mantis Shrimp with naturally spring loaded arms that can pack a punch strong enough to break aquarium glass?! We didn't either! I don't think I'd want to be its opponent in a boxing match.
All together a relatively uneventful beach clean, with the usual collection of cigarette butts and plastic. Quite a few small black plastic forks as well. The find of the day goes to Katie for spotting a small hair clip hidden under a bush. We also found a bone (I think?) and a banana peel (hence the double pun title!)
Once we had done a good length of the beach, we headed off to warm up with a coffee and chat.
Don't forget Portsmouth have a few more options for community missions this weekend and you can still sign up - charity collection at Fratton Park this evening, a litter pick at Great Salterns and helping out at the May Fayre.
Happy long weekend everyone! Happy running!
