I did a Monday evening Volunteer shift at Food redistribution charity City Harvest in Ealing. As well as Flattening cardboard and preparing the Dry Mixed Recycling for collection, I dealt with some of the food waste. The hot weather has meant unusually large quantities of spoilt, rotting fruit including mountains of mouldy figs. These went into the orange food bins along with packaged food with an expired ‘use by’ date. Surprisingly, the packaging doesn’t need to be removed. I was a bit sceptical about this at first but a bit of online research afterwards revealed that the Food waste processing company have very sophisticated de-packaging systems which separate organic and inorganic waste. The organic waste then goes into the ‘Concrete Cow’ (the Anaerobic Digestor) where it undergoes various process’ that turn it into biogas and fertiliser.
