This evening  a team of runners went out to tackle the area surrounding Bonner Gate;  this was the entrance to the park named after Bishop Bonner, the last lord of the manor of Stepney.  Victoria Park was the land surrounding his Palace, but was spoilt by its gravel and clay being exploited around the 1850s.  So, the Good Gym were there this evening to put the gravel back.We had a quick run around the park to warm up and then got stuck in straight away. Alfie had a van full of hoes and plastic bags waiting and we quickly weeded and shingled the trees surrounding Bonner gate.Having done that we cleared a large area down by the canal of its weeds. This was harder work than it looked like it would be and took the best part of half an hour with ten of us working full pelt. Lugging the earth back into the van and laying the rest of the gravel, I think Bishop Bonner would have been very proud of us putting this gravel back after such a long time. (We might not have been that proud of working for him though, he sounds like a nasty piece of work, here's a picture of him whipping a heretic with some scratchy branches). We had a warm down run up through the park to Victoria Park  Road and back towards Cambridge Heath road, a little detour to Old Bethnal Green road and we were back at York Hall. The digging was much harder than the running. Thanks to everyone for their hard work, I think the park warden was pretty pleased.
