Mini Mermaids Running Club (Islington chapter) are returning to Highbury Fields parkrun this month to offer Under 11 girls and boys the opportunity to complete their 5km challenge!
This event marks the finale of an 8 week programme, taking place in local schools and community centres to introduce young people into running and exercise in a fun, engaging way. Each participant will be seeking to complete the course at their own "happy pace"- running, walking, skipping, hopscotch etc- we want to make sure that all the boys and girls achieve their objective, whilst doing it in their way!
We are seeking volunteers for the event itself- namely MAMA MERMAIDS! Awesome female runners who wold be willing to support a mermaid round Highbury Fields parkrun, and to offer encouragement for their challenge!
10 Mama Mermaids required in total. (Please announce your involvement by Thursday 19th March!)
Here is a description of a perfect Mermaid Mama from volunteer coordinator, Khara Mills:
ROLE OF MAMA MERMAID
Accompany Mini Mermaids during 5KM challenge
Encourage girls to find their happy pace - run, walk, skip, jog
Keep girls safe, count laps & help them set small achievable goals
Ask the girls questions about themselves to keep them talking - it helps them to find their happy pace as they can’t go too fast AND hold a conversation!
HAVE FUN!
There will be moments during the challenge that are harder than others for the girls. During the programme we explain to the girls we have two voices in our heads. Mini Mermaid is our inner cheerleader, Siren is our inner critic. Mama Mermaids can ask the girls who’s voice they’re hearing and how to turn it into a positive.
‘I’m so tired - I don’t think I’m going to be able to finish.’ - SIREN
‘I’m tired. I’m going to walk for a little bit and give my legs a rest.’ - MINI MERMAID
We are also looking for active supporters and volunteers on the day. It would be also to have a Goodgym cheer squad and plenty of familiar faces taking on marshaling and parkrun duties!
Email Highbury Fields parkrun to be added to the roster, and sign up below to announce your involvement with Goodgym x Mini Mermaids!
