he church was established sometime in the 12th century. There is reference to a church here in 1274, and evidence of a building even before then. By 1356 it was dedicated to St Mary.[2] The building has been altered many times since its foundation and the oldest parts, the north wall and the tower (which seems to have had a steeple during the 16th and 17th centuries), date from the reign of King Henry VII.

St Mary-at-Finchley Churchyard Gardening Morning

Saturday 14th March | 10:00am – 12:00pm

📍 St Mary-at-Finchley Church Hendon Lane Finchley London N3 1TR

Join us for a spring gardening session at one of Barnet’s most historic and beautiful sites.

St Mary-at-Finchley is the oldest church in the area, with parts of the building dating back to the 12th century. The churchyard contains many listed memorials and is a peaceful green space in the heart of Finchley — a place of history, reflection and community.

This session will focus on the western side of the churchyard near the tower, where we’ll be reducing the spread of snowberry bushes and ivy that are growing over some of the most beautiful memorial stones. The aim is simple: • to protect the heritage • to restore visibility to the memorials • to make the garden area more enjoyable for everyone who visits

This activity is facilitated by Helen, who has been doing fantastic work supporting the upkeep of this important site.

What to bring • Gloves (if you have them) • Gardening tools (if you have them — some will be available)

Good to know

You’re very welcome to: • Come for the full session • Arrive late or leave early • Stay for as long or as short a time as you’re able

Every bit of help makes a difference.

This is a great opportunity to: • Support a historic Barnet landmark • Improve a shared community green space • Get outdoors and do something practical and meaningful

Would be lovely to see a few GoodGym Barnet faces there ..
