Two GoodGymers joined forces with the Wild Lakenham and Lakenham and Town Close gangs to give the railway embankment on Lakenham Way a bit of a makeover for its resident lizard colony.

The aim was to clear back the scrub and long grass, creating the shorter, more open areas the lizards prefer during the summer months for basking in the sunshine.

Everyone piled in straight away, removing shrubs and tackling the long grass with shears, a scythe, loppers and bowsaws. With plenty to clear, we soon made good progress across the bank.

After all that cutting and clearing, it was time for a well-earned tea break, with some excellent homemade cakes, cookies and cheese scones. Emmy the dog quickly launched a determined campaign to secure his share, claiming starvation to anyone who would listen. His powers of persuasion proved impressive, and one by one people cracked and handed over bits of cheese scone. With Emmy satisfied and the rest of us suitably refuelled, we headed back to the bank and carried on clearing.

By the end of the session, the embankment was looking much more open and ready to welcome its reptilian residents back out to bask when the warmer weather returns.

A lovely morning working alongside the local groups, with good company, good cake and a habitat left fit for a lizard king!
