Report written by Tower Hamlets runner
GoodGymers along with other volunteers met in the Stepney City Farm office for refreshments, ice breakers and a briefing of the next 3 hours ahead. We were then given a comprehensive tour of the premises before beginning our first and main task clearing leaves from the paths - whilst trying not to obstruct the visitors. (The Farm had a Farmers market, restaurant and classes going on – so it was a hive of activity whilst we were there). Once we completed our initial task - we had another short break before collecting rosehips (for making jam, tea etc.), and feeding pigs and rabbits. (I was given the chance to hold one of the cute rabbits – a true delight!) All in all, it was an enjoyable and rare opportunity to understand the workings of a City Farm through a variety of volunteering activities – which meant we never got bored during our 3 hours there.
There will be another volunteering session next Saturday*. Please see details here:
*Please note the expectation is that you will be there from 1-4pm – so please do not sign up unless you can commit to the full 3 hours).
Stepney City Farm is an educational charity aiming to improve lives through farming. The farm provides a welcoming place to bring together a diverse community, and cultivate wellbeing through high-welfare, environmentally-sustainable farming practices.
