U Leaf't me Up

Cardiff Report written by Michael

A nice turn out for our last group activity for the January Challenge....

We had them all tonight, runners, walkers and cyclists. Oh, how active we've been in Cardiff, well done team. Meeting at our usual place, we split into our groups and made our way to the task. We all made good time, meaning we could get to volunteering faster. Our task, to tidy up all of the leaves, and there were a lot that had also been there all Winter - pungent is probably the word to use.

Gloves all around tonight, very necessary - separating the trash into recycling bags and then the leaves into red bags, we got to work. Martin went over to sweep a different area with the help of Ben and Lucy collecting, Llion tidying up around a parked car whilst the rest of the group tackled the mound of leaves by the back door.

The odd worm or two were found enjoying themselves in the heap, doing what they do.

Learning TIME

  • There are 31 species of earthworm known to occur in natural environments within the British Isles, though only 29 species are known to occur in Great Britain.
  • Earthworms have been called ‘ecosystem engineers’.
  • Earthworms play an important role in breaking down dead organic matter in a process known as decomposition. Decomposition releases nutrients locked up in dead plants and animals and makes them available for use by living plants.
  • Earthworms are also responsible for mixing soil layers and incorporating organic matter into the soil.

Litter Sweet Symphony

Cardiff Report written by Michael

16 goodgymers were ready to clean those streets, no cold weather was going to stop us.

We had committed to a litter pick and a litter pick we would do! It was two group tonight, a litter picking walking crew and the runners plogging and litter picking too. Flo led the walking group around the 'Diff, all wrapped up warm and ready for action. Michael took the runners a little longer, keeping them warm as they got a good pace on. After a few kilometers the litter bags came out and the run became a plog. Then it slowed to a litter pick for a short time, the bags were left at a council bin and it was the final run back to meet the walkers for a group photo.

A good night as 9 bags of rubbish have been removed from the streets. #Love Where You Live

RUBBLE IN PARADISE

Cardiff Report written by Michael

On a night where the air was biting at our ankles, an impressive 13 goodgymers braved the weather for the Cardiff January Challenge.

We were back to the Samye Foundation, our last visit was decorating for Xmas... except for Michael and Darren who managed to pop along for their Fayre. Tonight would be very different though, and would soon warm up the group.

We were in three groups tonight, the walkers led by Michael, the runners led by Darren and Adam and the third group, still running but a shorter distance.

We arrived and got straight to work, no standing still in these temperatures. The 3 Xmas trees had to go back into the loft, there were tables and chairs to rearrange, bags and bags of rubble, wheelbarrows of rubbish and an array of tile bits to pick up.

Out came the lights and gloves for safety, we split into groups and got busy, so busy in fact that we managed to finish off the tasks with enough time to get a bit of vacuuming done too.

Tools down, warm up.

We popped inside for a catch up and some snacks, more water (hydration is important even in the cold).

We are nicely on track for our target of 100 deeds in January, but a few more km needed, so don’t forget to get Strava going on your walks, runs or bike rides. NEXT week we will be splitting into ploggers and litter pickers to tackle the City Centre. Get signed up here. We are also heading for food afterwards but need to book so you will have to sign up to this too
