Area Activator Simon was joined by Katie, Josh and Claire outside the Arsenal Community Hub on Monday evening. Before setting off on our trip over to the lovely ARC Centre in Angel, we performed the classic Goodgym count-off (name, number and "what did you enjoy most about last weekend?"). Our responses ranged from catching up with old friends on Primrose Hill, hiking across London and enjoying the Big Half on Sunday (congratulations to all of our Goodgym runners!). After a warm up on the Emirates slopes, we began our 2 mile jog across town!
This time, we decided to change up our usual running route by passing through Compton Terrace Gardens, and passing Union Chapel on our way to Essex Road, and down to Packington Street. Upon our arrival, we met with Susan, one of the excellent coordinators at the ARC Centre, and we quietly explained our task for the evening (while keeping our voices down for the Mysore Yoga class being led next door!).
Two weeks ago, our Goodgym crew helped with moving a huge amount of equipment and gardening kit from a spare room, and into an unused toilet block to allow the space to be used for an upcoming event. This week, we were tasked with re-organising the ARC Centre's portable tool and gardening shed- a former horse box, converted into a storage spot. Josh, Claire and Caitlin cracked on with carefully moving all of the contents of the horse box out and on to the side of the pavement, ready to be arranged. Hose pipes, wheel barrows, endless plant pots and tools were brought out throughout the evening.
Benedict and Charlotte also helped with checking to see if any of the office equipment from our last visit could be comfortably added to the horse box, without blocking the access point- additional pipes, wooden stakes and willow branches were added. By the end pf the evening, we had created loads more space in the box, and had made them most frequently used tools easily accessible for Will, Damien and all of the community gardeners near Packington and Canalside gardens.
Wonderful work everyone! Our run crew made their way back to The Emirates in good and ample time, and enjoyed a trip to Highbury Fields on route.
Group Run to The Rose Bowl, followed by our September Social!
After our group run to The Rose Bowl Youth Club near Canonbury, we are planning on making a trip to The Tollington Arms for some refreshments, delicious Thai food and good times to celebrate our September social.
Monday 12th September, 8.45pm onwards.
Last minute task- Memorial Garden Lifting and Shifting task at Grenville Gardens
Area Activator Simon will be helping the volunteers at Grenville Gardens on Tuesday 6th September (6pm) with moving some soil for the flower beds surrounding the community gardens.
We received the sad news that one of our frequent task owners, Sarah Roth, passed away recently. The team are planning on getting the garden ready for special event to commemorate her.
Any assistance would be hugely appreciated!
Mon 29th Aug at 6:45pm
5 Goodgym folks from the Hackney and Islington boroughs (including Camden regular Ivy who has moved in! Welcome!) joined Area Activator Simon for a special Bank Holiday Group Run. We started with a classic count off, while asking what we got up to with our weekend breaks (Notting Hill Carnival, parkrun tourism, long awaited catch ups with friends, much appreciated lie-ins!- all lovely stuff) before performing a warm-up on the Emirates Stadium Slopes.
On route to Thornhill Square gardens, we jogged together past the Caledonian Road Mansions estate to visit one of Simon's "cat spots"- a hang out for friendly neighbourhood cats discovered while flyering for the Market Road Gardens and Mencap community festival earlier this Summer. Our top cat today was a black and white kitten, who popped over to say Hi to us (see photos above).
We weaved down the Cally Road slopes, and rolled into Thornhill Square Gardens, meeting with Benedict and Anne and Task Owner Anna upon arrival. Wheelbarrows, gardening blades, secateurs and shovels were ready and prepared for us. Josh and Benedict were set to loading up some broken paving slabs into barrows, and placing them in line with a new "desire path"- a footpath created to keep garden visitors from stepping into new wildflower patches and into newly grown rose bushes. The soil proved to be a bit softer than last month, following the very heavy rainfall last week, so the boys were able to achieve a lot within 45 minutes! Anne and Ivy pulled on their gardening gloves, and got cracking with removing some huge, overgrown "bobbly plants" (as Anne referred to them) from the surrounding flower beds. Ivy also smashed through clearing the paved edges of the main pathways to the park of moss, weeds and invasive plants- the whole space looked so much tidier with your efforts!
As we wound up for the evening (and as the night started to draw in- we may need head torches soon!), posed for a Beatles inspired "Abbey Road" album cover photograph together, before setting off on our own separate routes home. Nice Goodgymming everyone- see you at The Arc Centre next week!

Mon 22nd Aug at 6:45pm
On a glorious (if slightly muggy) Monday evening, Goodgym Islington Area Activator Simon caught up with a lovely mix of new Goodgym runners (welcome Christian!) and keen returning folks (Adam had just returned from Cornwall and The Lake District, and Benedict had travelled to Scandinavia). Before heading on our way, AA Simon performed the group mission "count off" as a bit of an icebreaker. Each runner was asked to state their name, the number counted and what their perfect recipe for inviting guests round. We heard a lot of cheese suggestions - a very decadent choice! From here, engaged in a warm up on the Emirates slopes, and then ran the 1.6 miles to The Arc Centre.
Upon our arrival, we met up with the lovely Susan outside the yoga studio at the centre (we whispered as best we could to avoid disturbing the Vinyasa Flow session next door!). Half of our group stayed at the Arc to assist with moving loads of equipment and items from the main office space over to a temporary location- we believe that the office is due to be used for a project and needed to be painted and cleaned in advance. 5 pairs of hands and some active lifting and shifting made light work of a huge job!
The rest of our crew jogged over to Canalside Gardens, a beautiful neighbourhood space near De Beauvoir estate and committed to watering the newly planted trees in the park. Anne and John also helped with litter picking throughout the park, and into Packington Park as well.
Within 40 minutes of graft, our team did a smashing job of looking after the local green space, and a some top progress with organising the community hub. From here, our runners ran back towards The Emirates Stadium via a lovely diversion through Highbury Fields and down the slope on Whistler Street.

Josh Stevens earned their community cape by completing their first community mission.
Josh completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Josh was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.
Sun 21st Aug at 11:00am
It was wonderful to return to one of Goodgym Islington's longest running community missions after a short break over Summer! We had some regulars returning to Crouch End Open Space and the forest paths between Highgate and Muswell Hill (including ever present John and Friends of CREOS Guro and Nicolas), with new starters like Erayna.
Tasks on offer today involved moving some newly cut down tree stumps across the woodland (to be used to dead hedging and creating barriers around wild flower patches), and trimming away the overgrown tree branches surrounding the forest paths. Area Activator Simon also assisted with litter picking around the green fields near the local school yards, while Nic did a smashing job with weed whacking with a petrol driven strimmer!
Wonderful work everyone, Thank you for joining us!
