Flyers Buzzing Around a Cow Pat

Tuesday 12th November 2019

Written by Sam Ollason

It was an especially chilly autumnal evening and 4 GoodGym volunteers ran to Oldfield Park to deliver 800+ flyers for Send a Cow. The flyers advertised their charity places in the Bath Half next year and also a Christmas Carol concert they are hosting. We ran 6km and felt great (but tired!) after an evening in the fresh air!

We met at our usual spot outside the leisure centre. I gave an overview of the task ahead of us and the route we would be taking. Some of the runners hadn't been flyering with GoodGym before and were keen to get started, which was great to see!

Send a Cow are a charity based just outside of Bath and we have worked with them several times before. Tonight we were advertising their charity places in the Bath Half 2020. Entrants pay a reduced entrance fee and are expected to raise a small amount for the charity in return. The other half of the flyers advertised a free Christmas Carol concert in Bath Abbey on Thursday 12th December. Make sure to sign up and go along if you are free!

After a brisk warm-up we were on our way! After running through town we made it to Lower Oldfield Park. We split up into two teams to make sure we flyered each half of the street thoroughly and didn't accidentally double-deliver to a house. Some of the runners hadn't been to this part of Bath before so it was a good chance for them to expand their local geography.

We started on Lorne Road, moved onto Caledonian Road and then made our way over the railway bridge into the heart of Oldfield Park. After some hilly runs up and down roads like Herbert Road we were nearly all out of flyers! We delivered a few on the way back to the leisure centre and nearly depleted our stock. We took the few remaining leaflets home to hand out at our places of work.

Over 800 flyers by 4 people in just over an hour. Not bad for a Tuesday evening, but all in an evening's work for GoodGym Bath!

Thanks!

Thanks to the team at Send a Cow team for giving us this opportunity to get fit and do good, thanks to Will for carrying around the medical kit and thanks to all the runners who shunned an evening of television to come out and help their community!

Next week we are sweeping sand at a school in Lower Weston. This isn't one to miss, so make sure you sign up and join us!

800 flyers and Cow-nting!

Tuesday 15th October 2019

Written by Sam Ollason

A team of GoodGym volunteers ran around Bear Flat in Bath to deliver flyers for Send a Cow. We ran over 5km in total and went up and down lots of hills! It was rewarding to spread the message of a great charity and also it was fantastic training for us.

Welcome, Ben and Frankie!

We had two new runners meet us at the Leisure Centre. We welcomed Ben for his ever first run with GoodGym and we also welcomed Frankie who usually runs in London. Thanks to both of you for coming along and getting involved. We hope you can come and help us out again soon!

Send a Cow are a charity that do lots of development work in Africa. They have been working with communities there for over 30 years. Last night we delivered flyers advertising their charity places in the 2020 Bath Half. This is a great event that attracts thousands of people to our great city every year. To say thanks, the Send a Cow team have offered us a GoodGym discount. If you are interested then message me!

We split into two groups for this task. Emily lead a group around Holloway and the lower parts of Bear Flat. I took a group up towards the entrance of Entry Hill and then we worked our way back down towards The Bear along the residential roads.

There were some excitable dogs in some of the houses but fortunately no one suffered the fate of the unfortunate post person in cartoons ! We also managed to handout some leaflets (and promote running with GoodGym!) to residents on their way home who were interested. Good marketing effort, runners!

Well done!

Overall we delivered over 700 flyers! That's a fantastic achievement for just over an hour of work! It was a hilly run and I know there were some heavy legs at the end of the evening, so well done for sticking at it.

Thanks!

Thanks to the team at Send a Cow for a great task and thanks to Emily for leading half of the group last night. Also, thanks to Emily for the pun this week.

What a cow-incidence, flyering for Send a Cow again!

Tuesday 12th March 2019

Written by Sam Ollason

10 of us braved the cold and wet weather to deliver flyers for Send a Cow. We deliverd all around Oldfield Park to advertise their charity places in the Royal Parks Half Marathon later this year. We worked hard to deliver a massive 800 flyers between us!

Welcome Rachel and Libby!

After we met at the Leisure Centre, we welcomed two new runners to the group. It was great to have both of you along and we hope you will join us again soon for more fun GoodGym tasks!!

Moooving on up

We were due to be doing another task this evening, but due to unforseen circumstances we had to change plans at late notice. Fortunately for us, the team at Send a Cow are always keen to have us flyer for them, so I picked up a huge box of 800 flyers from their offices just outside of Bath before the run.

Send a Cow is a charity that helps develop communities in Africa. They provide training in farming and tackle social issues such as gender inequality throughout the continent. They were founded just outside of Bath and still have their main offices there. So it was great to help a local charity with an international reach.

Not an-udder cow pun!

We were flyering to advertise their charity places in the Royal Parks Half Marathon being held later this year. This flyering is a key way for them to advertise their charity places in this event and also spread awareness about the great work that they do.

We are udderly brilliant!

We set off from the Leisure Centre and ran along Lower Bristol Road to Oldfield Park. We meandered our way around the resedential area of Lower Oldfield Park and flyered to all houses in sight! We ended up heading down Junction Road towards Wellsway and ran down the hill back to the Leisure Centre.

Running puts is in a good mooooood!

There was some fantastic team work on display last night as runners were coordinating between each other to cover both sides of the roads in the most effective manner to make sure we completed the job without double-flyering doors. Good work team!

GoodGym happens early in the evening ... it's not past-ure bedtime!

In total, we managed to deliver a whopping 800 flyers, despite the rain and wind trying to dampen our spirits. Great work for a Tuesday evening!

Thanks

Thanks to Alison for backmarking for us. The pun this week was a collaborative effort between lots of the group - so thanks everyone!

Really milking the Cow puns

Tuesday 12th February 2019

Written by Sam Ollason

This week we were flyering for Send a Cow. There were 14 of us that ran around Holloway and Bear Flat in Bath and we delivered over 750 flyers! We had lots of fun and got some fantastic mid-week exercise on this 7km run.

Welcome Charlotte!

We met at our usual meeting spot at the Leisure Centre. Although the nights are getting lighter, at the moment we still meet inside in the warm and dry reception area. We welcomed a new runner, Charlotte, to the team. Chartlotte was keen to come along and see what GoodGym is all about and we are always keen to have new people join us! After our announcements, we completed a good warm-up to prepare us for the hilly running ahead.

An udder cow pun!

Send a Cow is a charity that do lots of development work in Africa. They have been working with communities there for over 30 years. We were asked to deliver flyers advertising their charity places in the RideLondon event. This is a 100 miles cycle ride around London and surrounding countryside. If you are interested in a getting place a half-price place through Send a Cow then take a look at their website.

No cow-ards at GoodGym!

We split into two groups for this flyering task. I lead a group of runners partly up Wellsway and we worked through the residential streets back towards The Bear. Emily kindly volunteered to lead another group around Holloway, Carlton Gardens and the lower parts of Bear Flat. The group managed to deliver all of their flyers in a great time and then ran up to Bear Flat to meet us.

A herd of GoodGym runners!

On our way back to the Leisure Centre we also managed to drop the final few flyers in houses along Wells Road and Pultney Road. How efficient!

Running is good for the calfs!

Thanks to Emily for leading a group and thanks to Chris L for backmarking for my group! Thanks to Chris D for the awesome pun this week (inspired by the fact that we have worked with Send a Cow several times over the last few months!)

Upcoming runs

  • Running the Bath Half? We have a weekend training run this Sunday.
  • Next week we are organising donated baby clothes at The Nest Project. This is a really fun task for a fantastic charity so make sure you sign up!

An-udder task for Send a Cow

Tuesday 8th January 2019

Written by Sam Ollason

For our first Group Run of 2019, 13 of us ran around Holloway and Bear Flat in Bath delivering 750 flyers for Send a Cow. We ran a very hilly 5km and had a fantastic workout!

Welcome Tom!

We met at our usual meeting spot inside the Leisure Centre main reception. We welcomed a new runner, Tom, to our group. Is there someone you know who would enjoy GoodGym? Then invite them along to join us!

Strava and our January Target

Across the country, GoodGym groups have set themselves January targets. We have set ourselves the challenge of running 500km and completing 100 good deeds in January. We are in a league with other groups and want to try and come top! Track our progress here.

You can be part of this by signing up to Strava (it's free) to record your run data. Then link it to your GoodGym account on the GG website (GoodGym Settings -> Strava/RunKeeper). As long as you do at least one good deed in January every run you record on Strava (even if it isn't a GoodGym run!) still goes towards our target!

After sharing news, we did a comprehensive warm-up to prepare us for the hilly running ahead on a cold wintery night.

Holy Cow, what a good cause!

Send a Cow is a charity that do lots of development work in Africa. They are an established charity and have been working with communities there for over 30 years. We were asked to deliver flyers advertising their Bath Half marathon places. If you are interested in a getting place in the Bath Half this year through Send a Cow then please refer to their website. There is only a £10 entrance fee (compared to the usual £40+) and an expectation that you can raise £200 in donations for them. Still not convinced: you get a free cow-print running top!!!

Scared of hills? There were no cow-ards here!

We split into two groups for this task. Emily lead one group around Holloway and then part of Bear Flat. I lead a second group further into Bear Flat. This was to make sure we made the best use of our time and spread the flyers to a variety of areas to increase our impact. We joined up near the end of the task and finished the final roads around Bear flat as one big group.

An udderly brilliant way to beat the January blues!

Getting back out running after a festive break is always a challenge, but we made sure that we all got around together!

Thanks!

Thanks to Emily for leading a group and thanks to Emma for backmarking. Thanks to Ruth for the awesome pun this week!

Holy Cow it’s cold - better keep mOOOving!

Tuesday 20th November 2018

Written by Sam Ollason

11 runners braved the cold weather to deliver flyers for Send a Cow. We flyered around the Moorland Road area of Oldfield Park. We delivered over 750 flyers between us!

Nifty Fifty

Well done to Lydia for achieving a massive 50 good deeds! Awesome work!

The charity

Send a Cow is a charity that helps develop communities in Africa. They provide training in farming and tackle social issues such as gender inequality throughout the continent. They have 90 charity places for the Bath Half next year and their marketing team asked us to post flyers around Bath to advertise for them.

Come flyer with me, we’ll flyer, we’ll flyer away!

We set off from the Leisure Centre and ran across town, through Green Park station and then over to Oldfield Park. We flyered down several roads that are connected to Moorland Road. There are quite steep … but we managed it together!

We then ran further uphill to flyer along Coronation Avenue. There are lots of houses in this area of Bath so it was perfect for distributing our paper flyers!

In total, we managed to deliver a whopping 750 flyers! Great work for a Tuesday evening!

Thanks to Ollie for backmarking. The pun this week was a joint effort between Lydia and Emma! Thanks you two!

The Cow

Unfortunately it is too long for a pun, but thanks to Catrin for sharing this poem by Ogden Nash at the warm-down: The cow is of the bovine ilk; One end is moo, the other, milk.
