spAM to PM - You can rely on GoodGym

Thursday 1st October 2020

Written by Sam Knott

Five of Liverpool's finest Good Gymmers attended North Liverpool Food bank to continue Monday's efforts. After a short amount of getting lost from all of us, the team was met by Jo, the coordinator of this incredible operation.

Our first task was to unbox and move a giant shipment of Tinned Japanese SPAM-esq ham from the delivery pallet to the dollys for easy transportation. There was an informal race between teams to see who could do the most with Chloe and Claire easily outpacing Sam and Ruth due to superior skill and less general nattering and faffing about. Emma (big props for actually running to the task) arrived mid 'race' and, diplomatically, helped both teams.

Once the team had finished their spamtastic work (thanks for that pun Emma) we set about moving some heavy pallets and helping load supplies onto the van for transport.

Always happy to help out this great local operation and will certainly be back in the future

We might have only been skimming the surface but we certainly weren't milking in

Monday 28th September 2020

Thanks this week go to Christina mainly for the pun. What a team we were: Rowan, Christina, Pauline, Daniel, Helena and Mat. A MASSIVE WELCOME to Helena as this was her first task for Good Gym. It was also only Daniel's second one, so good to see him come back for more and the hope is that you both enjoyed it, got a lot out of it and will want to return again. And of course we had four not so old, old timers making up the intrepid team. Christina in particular was welcome back after a busy time away. It is always lovely to see people again after so long.

The weather decided to dump some drizzly rain on us on the way to the task but of course as we arrived it pretty much stopped. Not dampened by this we met the lovely Jo, who runs the food bank and got stuck into the first task of the day, which was to unpack various food items into small crates. We polished this off in no time and then had to sort hundreds of packs of long life milk (hence the pun) into date order as some of it is about to go out of date in November. As a bonus we managed to also check dates on crate loads of cereal and so in only an hour we had managed to do more than Jo had dreamed we would be able to do and was really pleased. It still amazes me how much a group of people are able to get done in only an hour, which is part of the magic of Good Gym. And a different group get to do it all again on Thursday.

People are getting pretty desperate out there and so this food bank is their only means to getting food. Helping Jo out sorting is vital so that she can get on and actually get the food out to those who need it most, so well done one and all.

Full of beans!!

Monday 2nd March 2020

Written by John Connaghan

Fourteen Goodgym runners did some brilliant work to help a local Foodbank.

North Liverpool Foodbank works closely with the local community to help those most in need. Jo and her son do some great work and it was a pleasure to be able to help them out.

Through a myriad of traffic lights, we wound our way North past the largest Lambanana in town! We were greeted by Jo and split into 3 groups, sorting, weighing and moving on hundreds of cans of beans. Spread the word, don’t donate beans, I think they might have enough!!

Kudos to our new runners Alice, Zoe and Andy who did some great work and fit right in! Well done to Aidan who covered plenty of the heavy lifting working with Jo to weigh the crates.

With the floor empty of crates and a huge amount of work done, we bid Jo farewell and wound our way back up through the streets, past the beautiful smells of Bold Street and Sophie sorted us with a warm down to see us right.

Well done each of you, it’s lovely to have helped this great charity

Thinking Inside The Box

Monday 3rd February 2020

Written by Char Binns

After the wild days of the January Challenge (smashed it, well done team) a super 17 showed up for the first Group Run of February.

Running through wild winds, rain and hail, these super heroes attracted more than a few seconds glances as we headed right through the city centre. We made good time and were greeted warmly by Warehouse Manager Jo and her boys with a stack of crates ready for sorting. The Foodbank received loads of extra donations in December and our task was to help sort the items. Each item was sorted into boxes according to its best before date and type.

After a few minutes of getting used to where each food type was located, the team speeded through a stack of crates, with another pile added with just ten minutes to go. With our backs to the clock, all of the crates were sorted before the time came to head back to base. Brilliant work team!

Big shout out to newbies Farnaz, Georgia and Lucy who all got really stuck in at the task and easily kept pace too. We'd love to see you again soon.

After the task there wasn't much time for a fitness session, but we used the warehouse car park to get everyone's heart beats nice and high with a 3-minute game of tig. But before the 3 minutes were up, the amazing IT team of Baptiste, Will and Effie managed to tig everyone!

The return journey was made extra exciting by traffic lights, hills and hail. But everyone dug deep and we made it back to base a little after 8pm. Well done team!

Next week we're in the city centre once again, sorting donations at Scope. Don't forget to sign-up here.

PS. Holiday alert! If you'd like to join the Liverpool X Cardiff Welsh Weekender make sure you sign-up here PLUS complete the booking form and pay the deposit by Wednesday 12 February.
