The Circle of (GoodGym) Life

Sunday 19th April

Written by Nottingham runner

We finally managed to get another date in the diary with Kathryn after a very long gap.

Nigel, Leah, Rob and mini GoodGymers Carys and Milo (who we think were celebrating their 10th task) headed down to Lindum Grove to help get the gardens ready for the summer.

The sun was shining gloriously for us as we worked our way through a couple of tasks Kathryn had planned. Nigel and Rob were over the road in the patch where we planted trees a while back, digging out some very spiky weeds that had managed to break through the plastic sheeting that was supposed to keep them at bay. There are some plans afoot to maybe create a shelter of some kind in that space once it's fully cleared, so keep your eyes peeled!

Back in the garden itself, Leah and the kids were tasked with smashing up bags of clay with a mallet, then stamping it into finer dust, then putting it back into sacks. It turns out that this is a recycling project involving another GoodGym task host, Windmill Community Gardens. They're replacing their old clay oven, so they've donated it to Lindum Grove. We were smashing it up into powder ready to be turned into new clay that Kathryn plans to turn into their own oven some day soon. Apparently this may involve barefoot stomping of clay – we'll let you know if there's a chance to lend a foot!

A Tree-mendous Afternoom

Sunday 23rd March 2025

Written by Nottingham runner

Leah, Robert and their two mini GoodGymers headed over to Lindum Grove to lend a hand with some tree planting.

The trees were provided by Trees for Climate, a nationwide project to grow new woodlands, and Greenwood Community Forest.

After Rob got some old bricks out of the ground with a pickaxe (the site used to be a row of houses and a playground), we got our apple tree in and rehomed a few worms along the way.

We also planted some daffodils around the trees and waved to a drone capturing everyone hard at work.

Jules does a GoodGym double

Sunday 29th September 2024

Written by Rachel Levick

Fresh from cheering on the runners at the Robin Hood Half, Jules cycled over to the Lindum Grove Community Garden to help Kathryn with various tasks.

In a very productive session, they cleared up some rubbish, did a hay cut on the mini meadow and painted the loo. And what a beautiful loo it is too!!

Jules said "Kathryn and I spent a lovely hour or so this morning clearing a meadow flower bed ready for some new seeds and base painting the new compost toilet. It’s final fun colour and design yet to be decided - ideas anyone??".

Well done Jules for completing a GoodGym double today.

Sweeping away the time!

Sunday 25th August 2024

Written by Rachel Levick

Five GoodGym Nottingham members made their way to Lindum Grove to help kathryn with some much-needed jobs around the community garden.

We welcomed new members Julia, Tim and Matthew, who were joined by Rachel W and Jules.

Kathryn would like to pass on a big thank you for another great GoodGym session. She was very grateful that some people even stayed longer than the hour to continue to help her out. Also thanks to Tim who fed back that it was 'a great feeling that I helped in a local community area'. We are glad to hear that everyone had fun!

Where there's a willow, there's a way

Sunday 12th May 2024

Written by Rachel Levick

On a sunny Sunday in Nottingham, 3 GoodGymers headed to the Lindum Grove Community Garden to help Kathryn with some more jobs. Under the shade of a large willow tree (which was quite welcome on such a warm day) we worked on creating a dead hedge.

Thankfully this wasn’t Natalie's first dead hedge, so she took the lead in lining the hedge with stakes and showing us how to weave willow along the edges. After an hour we’d made a good start on the hedge, which will eventually form the boundary to a shady extension to the existing garden with benches and a picnic area.

We welcomed Helen to her first GoodGym task – lovely to meet you!
