Wanstead Corner House Project

Sun 7 Nov
Report written by Valerie Anderson

What a wonderful morning spent helping at the Corner House project. It was great to see the gang from GoodGym there, helping to clear the huge wall of Ivy. We were all given tasks to do, to help the amazing team of women, who have dedicated their own time to help to create a beautiful garden. Looking forward to going back to help next month.

  • Val

It was a nice sunny morning indeed, ideal for a little session at the Cornerhouse and almost perfect for Pauline's first GG session! (give her a cheer)

The main target was the amount of ivy growing over the top of the wall, with Jan (one of Marians team) going up the ladder while Sharon tackled it from the ground. Pauline & Valerie got stuck in digging over & emptying (leave) composting bins. Blink and over an hour is gone, several compost heaps moved and a mountain of ivy packed into green waste bags and additional huge bag.

Recycle Path

Sat 6 Nov
Report written by Jenny McCurry

Lovely to see so many signed up for the Valentines Forest Project. James and Padraig had done a fine job cheering on the park runners and Jenny not only ran herself but came back to support Linda in her run finish.

There was much cardboard laying and wood-chip shifting to be done to make biodegradable paths. This was a very satisfying task, as you could really see the difference made in just over an hour. We also got to see some drone photos and videos that the task owner had taken of the site, which was pretty cool.

As you can see by the photos everyone got stuck into the task prompting the below response from the task owner.

"I want to say a massive thank you to the beautiful people who came to help today. We got loads done today. Please pass on our thanks."

Nice one team GGR 👍

Souper efficient packing - we've never bean so fast! so fast!

Sat 30 Oct
Report written by Jenny McCurry

It was great to see everyone at Frenford on such an awfully rainy morning. Several of the group cycled there despite the terrible weather - kudos to you for that! 👏

With a large group of volunteers and not as many parcels as previously, we got through the packing in record time, finishing up around 10.30. That left plenty of time for tidying, restocking and helping drivers to load cars before finishing up around noon. We even had time for a quick tea break and some Halloween sweet treats.

It was great to meet Nargis on her first task and Val and Yasmine both completed their 5th tasks. Well done everyone, hope you enjoyed the sunshine in the afternoon. 🌞

Forest Stumps

Sat 23 Oct
Report written by Linda

Jenny, James and Linda participated in Valentines ParkRun with James achieving another PB! Well Done Buddy 👏🏻

After a brief pit stop to refuel Val had cycled up to meet us and we moved on to the Forest Garden. Jenny and Linda went to retrieve the cardboard fellow GGer PVT had collected for this project from her car whilst James and Val started removing the plastic tape and labels from the cardboard already at the forest. Sharon arrived shortly after to help with this and the subsequent laying down of the cardboard. We were then joined by Jenny's partner and new GG member Padraig, he and Jenny were given the strenuous task of shifting wood chip onto the cardboard to serve as weed sheet. While Val and Linda spread the wood chip evenly, Sharon and James moved on to help weave a wall for the insect sanctuary between the tree stumps. James was then given a machete to cut some more branches for weaving, a job which he took on with much enthusiasm...maybe a little too much enthusiasm 😂

Rakesh the task owner arrived and asked Jenny, Padraig, James and Val to move some rather large slices of tree which are to be to be assembled into a seating area. This was clearly heavy work but being the GG troupers that they are they didn't complain and even went on to do another task at the local food bank who had put out a last minute cry for help. Sharon and Linda stayed on to finish up with the weaving.

Sending out a huge welcome to Padraig on behalf of Good Gym Redbridge, he wasted no time in getting stuck in with the rest of the gang and even went on to do the double. 🙌
