A Tiny Forest is a dense and rapidly growing native woodland in a small area. It will provide a protected habitat for wildlife, capture carbon, filter the air of harmful particulates and reduce flooding and soil loss.

Besides these important local effects, it is symbolic of our need to protect our wider environment and it is hoped it will provide an education and emotional engagement of our community. It’s also something that we will have to physically nurture as a group. Its a great fit for Goodgym!

These initiatives are gaining popularity across the UK, with organisations like EarthWatch and The Conservation Volunteers getting involved.

If you have ideas about how to promote this planting to the community please also get in touch. We want schools, community groups, artisans, news media and others to get involved.

Thanks to Daniel Mermelstein for introducing the idea to Goodgym Barnet.

Digging in the rain

Sat 21 Aug
Report written by Daniel Mermelstein

A group of five goodgymmers met at Cricklewood Millenium Green in north London to help a group of local volunteers keep the park beautiful for visitors. It drizzled without interruption for the two hours we were there but that did not dampen our enthusiasm! We cut the lawn with their new lawn mower, dug and weeded all around the park. By the time we finished it looked so much better than when we started. Thank you to the Green's volunteers for inviting us to help them.

Gardening and litter picking at Cricklewood Millennium Green

Sat 21 Aug 11:00 am
23 Claremont Road, Cricklewood, London, NW2 1BP
Improvement of local green space frequently used by dog walkers & local residents

This mission will involve weeding, litter picking and trimming of shrubs. Please bring your own gloves and snacks. All other equipment will be provided.

GoodGym members have already provided great help to the local community with this local amenity. The Cricklewood Millenium Green is a small green space built on what used to be railway land and air raid shelters. It boasts a number of railway-related sculptures made especially for the Green by a local artist, as well as marked nature trail.

The Green is in need of love, as some of the flower beds are overgrown and the foliage around the nature trail needs trimming back.

So come and help the Green's trustees and volunteers spruce it up!

Rosemary is a now a fully fledged GoodGym runner. They've just run to do good for the first time. They are out there making amazing things happen and getting fit at the same time.

Rosemary Chamberlain has earned their community cape by completing their first community mission. Fri 2 Oct 2020

Rosemary completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Rosemary was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.

Flaxing our muscles in the garden

Thu 1 Oct
Report written by Fraser Mashiter

Another mission watering the gardens at Brondesbury Park station, made more special by it being one of our group's very first experiences of GoodGym! The functioning hose on one side of the platform made short work of that garden, after which the other side was finished off with watering cans. There's a wonderful variety of plants growing here from rhubarb and corn to hops and New Zealand flax*.

  • We think it's flax, but even if it's not, we've decided it is for the sake of the title!

Brondesbury Park Watering with... Energy! (Thursday)

Thu 1 Oct 18:00 pm
213A Chevening Road, London, NW6 6RP
Keeping the gardens watered this summer

We are super pleased to be working with the wonderful Energy Gardens at Brondesbury Park station.

The task at hand - watering! As the heat of the summer months passes by the plants at the gardens at Brondesbury Park station need loads of watering.

We'll meet outside the station on Chevening Road and then proceed to get into our high vis and then get watering (if you don't see others then please go down to the platform to check if anyone is already there). There are water butts for the water, watering cans and even a solar powered hose! Please find detailed instructions here.

Please also note GoodGym's continually update Community Mission guidance here.

Cheers,
Pritesh
