Fast Flyer 🗞️✈️

Southwark Report written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)

A different Wednesday, a different outcome.

Sam ran over from home after checking on his kitten to find a few GoodGymers waiting for him and the moment of truth....will we be allowed in Old Spike Peckham after being locked out last week? Yes we were!

Tonight, it would be a chilled session as Sam had the flyers the team had to deliver and the area where they had to flyer was only a 1.5k run away. Andrada, Daryl, David, Emma, Louise, Nathan, Nelly, Paulin and Rosalind met Sam in the warmth of Old Spike as they took time with the ice-breaker question tonight.

Sam asked: On Friday, is International Women's Day, my question:

To those that identify as "Male" or non-binary, at my work there's a campaign called "have you noticed her?". Who's a female talent that you have noticed breaking barriers? In your life or in the media (or both). To those who identify as "Female" or non-binary this year's topic is about an inclusive workforce - any tip(s) for your male colleagues to make you feel included at work? However, you can answer either or both questions - this is not gender exclusive questions.

We had a good 10-15 minute chat about noticing influential women in our lives both personally and in the media plus we gave tips on making great strides to feel more inclusive from transparency to active listening and understanding. These are just some of the tips we can take forward.

Afterwards, Paulin needed to get herself recorded for her Run Leader training, so Sam took a video of her doing the warm-up before we ventured through the streets of Peckham, East Dulwich and up Champion Hill.

Low batteries and counting buses

At the top of Champion Hill, Sam took out the GROAD flyers and assigned Daryl, Emma and Paulin as team leaders as there were three areas that needed to be targeted:

All the teams had 30 minutes to deliver all the flyers whilst Sam waited at the bus stop for them to come back. During this time, his phone died due to low batteries and he counted and did an unofficial survey for TFL - it's a well service bus stop with 11 buses coming in 30 minutes.

Everyone came back on time and Sam led the way back after as we were in a rush to start the monthly social, which was at Brick Brewery Taproom. What a great way to end the night!

Thank You to all the GG-ers

A personal thanks from me to all those who came out on Wednesday night! It was great to be back at Old Spike Peckham. Thanks to everyone for contributing to our IWD conversation. Thank you to Steve for backmarking both runs and kudos to everyone for getting stuck in. Another warm welcome to Louise for backmarking both runs. Another great social, this time at Brick Brewery Taproom, where almost all of us enjoyed the tacos and Latin flavours as well as the beers!

Just applying the finishing touches 🖌️

Southwark Report written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)

"I'm late, I'm late, I'm very very late, hello, goodbye", like the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland, Sam (for the first time in his 2.5 years as Area Activator) was very late for the group run and opening Old Spike Peckham as he was held back at work.

Arriving at 18:47, Sam saw everyone gather outside Old Spike Peckham, but to add to his woes, he found out for the first time too that whoever locked up Old Spike Peckham locked the bottom lock too, which he didn't have. Thinking on the spot, he asked the Georgian Wine Bar next door whether the run group could drop bags and coats in their cupboard room at the back. With some persuasion, the bar manager agreed. That was one less stress to deal with. Amongst all the chaos, Sam managed to introduce Tony who came for his first GoodGym session. Hooray and welcome!

The group were led by Paulin to the alleyway as she is preparing to complete her run leader training and wanted to put a practise in tonight. She did a quick jumping and squatting warm up to get us warm.

Noticing the time was approaching 19:00, Sam skipped the ice-breaker (for now) as he led from the front and Steve volunteered to backmark.

Refreshed walls

Through the backstreets of Peckham, up Chadwick Road (the hill) and down towards Camberwell, we went as we stopped in various places to re-group. We finally made it to Salvation Army Camberwell Corps. in time (19:15) as we met Valentina, Folarin, Phil and Richard who opted to walk / cycle to the task.

After taking a moment to introduce Valentina and what happens at the Salvation Army in Lomond Grove, Valentina gave clear instructions on what needed to be done after learning what we did from the first session. We had to ensure the entrance hall was clear and that there was lining on the floor before any paint could come out. There was enough tools for everyone, so picking up a paint brush or roller and sharing a paint tray, which Lucy had kindly poured out, everyone picked their bit of the wall and concentrated on applying the second coat of paint.

Having missed out on the ice-breaker poll and question earlier, Sam proceeded to ask: Since it was National Pokemon Day on Tuesday, what is your favourite Pokemon from Pikachu, Squirtle, Charmander and Bulbasaur? Plus, he threw in the ice-breaker question which was to do with "Employee Appreciation Day" on Friday: Do you have any cool perks at work that you want to share?

Pikachu won by a few votes, but Squirtle was a close second. Isaac shouted out that his company is doing the 4 day working week (more or less) as he logs off by midday on Friday. Others had flexi-working, which is almost a similar concept, but with a 5 day working week contract.

Once the paint was out and conscious that we had to clean / wash up afterwards, after 30 minutes, we managed to put on a second coat of paint and the team started to head to the kitchen to wash up the water-based paint brushes, rollers and trays.

Valentina was happy with what we had achieved and she will get one or two volunteers to touch up certain parts of the wall that needs to be touched up.

By 20:05, we had to rush off back to Peckham as like a school bus, we said our goodbyes to Adrian, Andrada, Folarin, Isaac and Nelly. After a quick stretch and having reached the Georgian Wine Bar, it was only fair that we brought something from the bar/shop, so Sam and Steve bought a lovely deep red, which was recommended. A great way to end the night!

Thank You to all the GG-ers

A personal thanks from me to all those who came out last night! It was a bit of a hectic start and we managed to work out a solution to drop off our bags and coats thanks to the Georgian Wine Bar next door. I will ensure Old Spike Peckham does not lock the second lock next Wednesday. Thanks to Steve for backmarking both runs and kudos to everyone for getting stuck in. Another warm welcome to Tony and we hope to see you at another group run or GoodGym session soon. Next Wednesday will be a calm one as we run over to Denmark Hill and Champion Hill to deliver Get Rid Of And Donate (GROAD) flyers to homes and flats around there and on top of that, we have our monthly social, so why don't you join us?

Swiftly getting things done ✅

Southwark Report written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)

This wasn't our usual Wednesday night group run as we welcomed not just one, but three newbies: Alex, Damian and Louise came to claim their first good deed with GoodGym. Tonight was our special collaboration with Swifty Mondays running club.

Despite it raining all day, there was a dry window of opportunity, which happened to land on Wednesday evening. Our regular runners started to trickle into Old Spike in Peckham and as 18:45 arrived, Sam promptly went through his usual GG intro speech, but adding the 3 ways of getting involved with GoodGym for the newbies. Tonight, his ice-breaker snap-poll was to do with National Love Your Pet Day, which was on Tuesday. The options were: Cat, Dog, Other or Neither? There were a couple of votes for "Neither", one for "Other" (Goat) and "Dog" took the snap poll over "Cat" by a few votes. Sam even prepared an ice-breaker question that correlated with National Margarita Day (on Thursday) and he asked "Favourite cocktail or mocktail?"

Some found cocktails too sweet and opting for Gin & Tonic, there were a few saying "that cocktail with the mint..." Mojito, Manhattan and Long Island Ice Tea, but no one said Margarita until Rosalind said it at the pub.

Thank you very mulch, Swifties

After a quick warm-up in the alleyway, Sam led the group through the backstreets of Peckham and up Chadwick Road (the hill) and down towards Denmark Hill. We made a couple of stops along the way to re-group with Maria backmarking (both ways). Arriving at Thorlands on time, we met Simon, Rosalind, Jo and Vic who opted to walk / cycle to the task.

After gathering our tools needed for the various tasks from the "Walled Garden", we proceed to the "Forest Garden" to put down the tools and split the group, but not before Sam could explain the vision of this brownfield site.

There were three tasks available:

  • Lindy led a group to the mulch / woodchip depo to bring wheelbarrows of mulch for the beds where we will grow exotic trees. Alex, Damian, Louise and Rosalind joined Lindy.
  • A team consisting of the "True Swifties" - Jo, Maria, Nelly and Vic concentrated on weeding the beds as they needed to prepare this in time before the mulch movers came with wheelbarrows of mulch.
  • Alex, Daryl and Isaac continued with the woodchip path. They dug, flattened (by raking) and put a layer of cardboard and woodchip.
  • Louise was our resident photographer for the night, but also helped with the weeding.

In 40 minutes, we managed to take out all the weeds, bring eight wheelbarrow's worth of mulch and continue with the woodchip path by over 2 - 3 metres! Well done team! Maybe the extra motivation came from those Taylor Swift songs...

With the clocks hitting 20:00, we quickly put back the tools before running off back to Old Spike for a quick stretch as most of us were up for a pint (or two) at The White Horse.

Thank You to all the GG-ers

A personal thanks from me to all those who came out last night! A great collab night with the Swifties! It was lovely to meet you Alex, Damian and Louise. Hope we can do another session in the Spring/Summer. Finally, a massive thank you to Maria for backmarking on both runs. We're off to Salvation Army Camberwell Corps. next Wednesday to put on a second coat of paint in their entrance room, so why don't you join us?
