Goodgym x Great Get Together - Walking and litter pick via Tunnels, Tucking mill and Prior park

Sun 20 Jun 09:15 am
Outside the White Hart pub, Widcombe Hill, Bathwick, BATH, BA2 6AA
Connect, chat, clear litter and get together

On Sunday 20th of June GoodGym is again partnering with the Great Get Together, the initiative set up following the murder of Jo Cox MP in 2016. The Great Get Together aims to bring people together to celebrate what they have in common and create connections between communities.

This year they are hosting the Great Walk Together as part of Refugee Week, a push to get people outside and walking and talking.

We will be doing a walk from Widcombe, through the longest of the Two Tunnels to Tucking mill and then back via the Bath Skyline past the beautiful Prior park down to Widcombe. It's about 7km and is a beautiful walk. Whilst walking we will be chatting and picking up any litter we see en route.

Beetles and rock(s)'n'roll - do you dig it?

Sat 22 May
Report written by Sam Ollason

A group of GoodGymmers made their way to St Marks Church in Widcome. We have been back to help their team of volunteers maintain their garden area (used by a variety of community groups).

The wider piece of work at the church is to rebuild a wall that has fallen into disrepair over time.

We split into two groups again. Emily J and I helped the two lead volunteers gather rocks and build a more stable platform to walk along near the wall. We found some awesome beetles amongst the rocks as well as a few big spiders! And Jer, Rob and Emily K toiled away digging the top layers of soil to make an area for the builders to work on the top of the wall.

We saw an impressive variety of wildlife in the forest and we even treated ourselves to a cake from the bake sale being run by a local school (purely for the sugar boost, of course!)

2-Vac or not 2-Vac, that is the injection?

Sat 15 May
Report written by Meyrick Williams

On a very busy Saturday evening shift GoodGym athletes Rob, Steven and Meyrick put in a sterling effort to help marshall at the Pavilions.

Today was dedicated to people receiving vaccine number two and the queue was non stop. The venue were, as always, very welcoming and grateful for our help and made sure we knew exactly what was required of us.

To help keep us on the ball the staff manager ensured we were adequately rotated from task to task, from monitoring all exits to sanitising seating where used. Everything we needed to do carry out or duties was on hand and in abundant supply.

With the leisure centre now open regular punters are using the car park as well so the pay and display was back in action. In order to allow people attending a vaccine appointment to park for free there was a new process for inputting car registration details upon entry to allow them a free hours parking.

The late shift also incorporates those with no pre booked appointments who are called by the doctors on the day to attend at short notice in order that as many vaccines can be used on the day to avoid waste.

All in all a very successful day assisting this monumental vaccination program, congrats to all involved.

Get your arms out.

Fri 7 May
Report written by Mary Caudle

It was our turn to help out at the last session of the day assisting at the vaccination centre. We took it in turns to get car registration details, to prevent parking tickets, take temperatures, and guide people to the waiting spots. Everyone was happy to be receiving there jab so the atmosphere was jolly.
