Big box, yellow box, coffee box, pasta box - but which quarter box?

Tue 25 Jan
Report written by Rob Haworth

Is June 2022 Quarter 2 or 3? Which box is for August? Can you find the expiry date on this...? All valid questions when sorting out the various food donations in the Big Yellow Box storage centre.

The task was simple enough, sort the hot drink boxes along with the pastas and then lentils into different boxes depending on their expiry date. But which box was for quarter 2 again? And is August quarter 2 or 3? Luckily enough the 7 Kingston GG members were awake enough to swiftly move through the workload and even with the occasional sprint/slow jog/wonder down to turn the lights back on, we finished within the hour and were faced with one more challenge - find the magic button that opens the door...

Creating a new community space for Kingston Road Recreation Ground

Mon 31 Jan 18:45 pm
The Quaker Centre, Fairfield East, Kingston Upon Thames, KT1 2PT
Enhance the park for all its visitors

We are needed to help clear some shrubs in front of the new boxing gym next to the children's playground for the Kingston Road Recreation Ground. The bushes are overgrown and need a hard prune so they can grow new shoots in the spring. There may be some litter-picking and weed clearing too. This will benefit the users of the park and being so close to the playground will hopefully create a lovely area for local families.

The Friends of Kingston Road Recreational Ground are very grateful for our assistance. We will be provided will tools for the tasks but don't forget to bring your headtorches and gloves. The waste should be left to the righthand side of the pavilion and Glendale will remove the Green waste the following day. Aaron Way is the contact - 07919 031160

We will meet at The Quaker Centre at 6.45pm and will run 2km up to the Richmond Road Recreation Centre via Bonner Hill Road. We will be meeting Aaron at the entrance of the park opposite Dickerage Lane - if you want to meet us there please leave a message in the comments.

New DIGS for Kingston

Tue 18 Jan
Report written by Rob Haworth

New year new HQ for Kingston this week - out with the old meet up point in the Guildhall and in with the new meet up point at the fantastic Quaker Centre. Led by a fresh faced new Area Activator in Rachel, who gave her first group briefing and led her first (of many I'm sure) run around fairfield and back to school for the evenings mission.

It was there our teacher for the evening, Kate, took over the lesson. Maths was the topic of choice in a slightly practical format.Taking away all the muddy build up and school resources that had beenadded since our last visit, and to tidy up the gardens round the front of the school of themultiple weeds that had. Like all good students wedivided into smaller groups and sub groups, to set about the various tasks and indouble quick time we completed the tasks and were rewarded with chocolate cake in the staff room for being so well behaved.

After school, a few of us snuck of to the pub to let our hair down a bit, before we called it a night.

Thanks to Rachel for organising the Quaker centre as our new meet up point - it really is a fantastic all singing and all dancing venue, for the future of Kingston GoodGym. I look forward to more group runs setting off from here to come. Also thanks to Kate for organising the school mission for us, I'm sure we'll be needed back in the spring again.

Sorting food at the Foodbank

Tue 25 Jan 19:00 pm
Big Yellow Self Storage, 225 Hook Rise South, Tolworth, KT6 7LD
So food can be distributed to those most in need

We have several units at the foodbank and one of the most important tasks we have to do is sort the donated food and make sure it is all in date. Every item of food that leaves here has to be fresh and ready to eat and people sadly don't always check before they kindly donate. We need to check all the expiry dates on all the items of food. There's always lots to do!

Risks
The crates can be heavy so please be sensible when lifted. Please lift with bended knees.

It is an indoor task so please do a lateral flow the same day and please don't turn up if you are feeling unwell in any way. Don't forget your mask and use hand-sanitiser when you arrive and leave.

The task owner is Ian and his number is 07809646575

Help KCS bring Christmas Music Alive Again

Sat 18 Dec 12:30 pm
St Andrews Church, , Maple Road,, Surbiton, KT6 4DS

Please note that this community mission has been cancelled.

Spreading Christmas cheer with live carols and audience joining in (albeit masked), wine and mince pies at the interval!

The Kingston Choral Society need help with putting up the staging and setting out chairs for their Christmas concert.

The risks are involved with moving and assembling cumbersome bits of staging and moving towers of chairs (on a wheeled holder). Probably the greatest risk is to fingers getting in the way of staging or chairs! The staging and chairs are heavy but are on wheels/wheeled holders, The choir members have some experience of these tasks, but there is quite a lot of moving and handling involved.

We are a friendly bunch so please help us share the love of music.
