Crouch End Open Space (CREOS) Volunteering Day (August 2021)

Sun 15 Aug 11:00 am
Hanley tennis club car park, Greenways, Shepard's Path, off Park Road, London, N8 8JJ
Our monthly woodland regeneration session with the CREOS volunteering team

Join us as we help the team at CREOS, a local conservation charity, maintain and improve a lovely green oasis in Crouch End.

CREOS looks after the meadows and wooded pathways of the Crouch End Open Space. GoodGym runners have been helping them maintain this beautiful patch of land for a while now, and the CREOS team always has lots for us to do.

We'll meet for an 11am start and aim to work for two hours. Stay as long as you can... but if you can make it to 1pm you'll get to enjoy a picnic* provided by the CREOS team. (Though this may be contingent on the weather!)

Tue 11 May 19:00 pm
Martin Primary, Plane Tree Walk, London, N2 9JP
improve the environment for study and relaxation.

We will help this barnet primary school in East Finchley with its forest school.

Forest School is a type of outdoor education in which children visit forests and woodlands to learn personal, social, physical and technical skills. It has been defined as ‘an inspirational process that offers children regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence through hands-on learning in a woodland environment.

We need to move wood chip to help keep the paths free of mud in the woodland area. We will meet the school caretaker Tristan.

We will do a fitness session for those that want to take part.

Market in your diaries!

Sat 17 Apr
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

Last Saturday marked the return of Goodgym Islington at Market Road Gardens, a super popular regular task set up by Frannie and the Octopus Community Network. We have been helping with this lovely wild green space since August 2019 (just as AA Simon started as a trainer), and all of us have been able to see the transformation over time. This forgotten spot opposite Caledonian Park has now become a quiet flourishing nature spot, popular with school groups, families and users of the Hayward Adventure Playground.

Our team got started with clearing the main pathways and open spaces of litter and green waste, whilst also separating any organic materials for composting. The rest of the team shoveled large quantities of bark and mulch from one storage block to another, to allow the green stuff to become compost for next season. Over time, the mulch will start to become nice and nutritious of the soil and great for planting new flowers later in the year. One of the unique features of Market Road Gardens is the careful maintenance of a wild permaculture throughout the space- the plants are left to grow naturally, with minimal interference from gardeners- a semi-maintained wild garden.

It was wonderful to be back again, and will return very soon! Well done all!

Rachel has run 100 good deeds with GoodGym. Sun 11 Apr 2021

Rachel has just reached another level: 100 good deeds with GoodGym. That's at least 100 times when they could have easily done something easier. But they didn't, Rachel has kept going and going. Helping a lot of other people and getting a bit fitter at the same time. Congratulations Rachel.

Picking but not bluebells!

Sun 11 Apr
Report written by Paul Salman

Four Goodgym Runner‘s met to assist Parkland friends (Muswell Hill section) to litter pick. They asked us to work as a group removing rubbish from the bushes and banks at the side of the path. The Sun was out as well as the bluebells! If you haven’t been it’s worth a visit with fantastic views over East London. It’s good to be back doing some good!

shout out to Rachel on her 100!

Litter picking in Parkland Nature Reserve (muswell Hill section)

Sun 11 Apr 10:30 am
9 Cranley Gardens, London, N10
Helping to improve the quality of the Parkland Walk Local Nature Reserv

This event is organised by the friends of parkland.

The Parkland Walk is the longest linear nature reserve in London at 4km in length, and follows the former railway line connecting Finsbury Park to Alexandra Palace which opened in 1873. Its fame is now global as it often features on 'must do' lists for visitors from oversees.

Recent edge vegetation clearance has exposed a lot of rubbish and with plants beginning to shoot we have a brief window of opportunity to tackle the rubbish that is away from the path.

Sunday 10.00 - 12.30 Muswell Hill Meeting at the underpass on Muswell Hill and working towards Cranley Garden.

Junction of Cranley Gardens and Muswell Hill Road

Additional guidelines Wear gloves at all times. Don’t handle needles. Look carefully at where you are placing your hands and feet. Be aware of branches at eye height. Work up slopes not down. Work with at least one other. Don’t get bogged down with heavy/buried items. Broken glass should be collected in a box. Waste bags should be left by bins. Wash hands before handling food. Please comply with all Covid regulations as required.

Want you bag, want you bag, want you bag for good...

Thu 8 Apr
Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

Goodgym Islington members met up at the Highbury Quadrant greening project for our first gardening related group community task of 2021! Fantastic to see plenty of familiar faces and to welcome first timer Louisa.

Frannie, the green fingered powerhouse in charge of the Octopus Community Network was surprised to find a large delivery of building aggregate, bags of compost and loose pebbles had been dropped off on the street immediately in front of the Highbury Quadrant housing estate. This was not expected, and not convenient!

Luckily, we had a solid team of Goodgym runners arriving to help out on Thursday evening, and we got right to work with moving these heavy items off the neighbourhood parking bays, and over to the Highbury Quadrant meadows. We shared roles between us, switching from shoveling rocks and gravel, and then wheelbarrowing and carrying buckets and bags between the street and the gardens. We threw a slight spanner in the works when we attempted to drag the first bag full of building material in one go, and split the bottom of the sack just as we approached the gardens, but John and Ernestas quickly scooped up and swept the spilled rocks and gravel in no time.

After just over an hour of hard graft, we successfully deposited all of the rocks, gravel and compost into the garden play area, ready for local school groups to visit soon. The plan was to make all of the paths safe to run around on, even when wet and muddy. The space looks really lovely (an amazing renovation since when we first started helping here in late 2019), but certainly needs for Goodgym assistance over the coming months- we will be back soon!
