As part of the Portsmouth-Wide "We Shine" Festival, Fratton Big Local are hosting a lantern parade on Friday 19th November.
The parade leaves from the British Legion at the bottom end of Fratton Road and travels up to St Mary's Church. Volunteer Marshals are required to help things run smoothly, which is where GoodGym comes in!
You'll also get to see some of the lovely lanterns made by GoodGymmers back in October!
We met in the Lido car park, accidentally in middle of a Mini meet up. To escape all the cars and car chat, we headed down the foreshore to stretch our legs before getting on with the evening's good deed.
It was almost Wind in the Willows tonight although the couple of rats we spotted weren't wearing waistcoats! They were impressive swimmers though. We were kept in check by the swans and cygnets who were supervising our litter pick of their nesting area. A field mouse and a few slugs were other animals that joined us. No sign of Badger or Toad of Toad Hall sadly.
Armed with torches and bat lights, we managed to pick a lot of bottle lids, wrappers, stinking bags and cigarette ends out of the swan's nest as well as other rubbish from around the water's edge.
Nothing too scary or frightening for Halloween as yet but plenty of talk of costumes and pillow cases full of sweets. 🦇 🎃
We are back as a full group to help continue to green space clearance.
There will be:
litter picking - with some weird and wonderful finds guaranteed
nettle clearing - with a prize if you avoid being stung!
And the compost pile will be getting higher and higher!
Head torches recommended
Meet at the school (run/walk/cycle to get there - bikes can be brought into the site). We will do a fitness session on the playground after the digging/clearing - we will be well warmed up by then!
Are you ready for a visit to a haunted house? Hopefully no ghost spotting this evening as we will be inside Wymering Manor! The team are hoping to restore one of the kitchens and would like our help to make a start on cleaning it up.
If you prefer to be outside, there are always flowerbeds to be dug over and weeds to be pulled.
Please bring a head torch
Meet at Hilsea Lido car park to run or walk up to the task. Runners will take a longer route to get there.
You can also meet us at the task just before 1830 - please comment below if you are taking this option so we know not to wait for you at the Lido. The address is Wymering Manor, Old Wymering Lane, Cosham, PO6 3NL
