Marshaling The Lantern Parade

Fri 19 Nov 18:00 pm
Royal British Legion, 1-3 Lucknow Street, Portsmouth, PO1 1PS
Help keep the community safe whilst celebrating art!

As part of the Portsmouth-Wide "We Shine" Festival, Fratton Big Local are hosting a lantern parade on Friday 19th November.

The parade leaves from the British Legion at the bottom end of Fratton Road and travels up to St Mary's Church. Volunteer Marshals are required to help things run smoothly, which is where GoodGym comes in!

You'll also get to see some of the lovely lanterns made by GoodGymmers back in October!

Supernatural

Wed 27 Oct
Report written by Katie Carew-Robinson

We met in the Lido car park, accidentally in middle of a Mini meet up. To escape all the cars and car chat, we headed down the foreshore to stretch our legs before getting on with the evening's good deed.

It was almost Wind in the Willows tonight although the couple of rats we spotted weren't wearing waistcoats! They were impressive swimmers though. We were kept in check by the swans and cygnets who were supervising our litter pick of their nesting area. A field mouse and a few slugs were other animals that joined us. No sign of Badger or Toad of Toad Hall sadly.

Armed with torches and bat lights, we managed to pick a lot of bottle lids, wrappers, stinking bags and cigarette ends out of the swan's nest as well as other rubbish from around the water's edge.

Nothing too scary or frightening for Halloween as yet but plenty of talk of costumes and pillow cases full of sweets. 🦇 🎃

If you prefer to be outside, there are always flowerbeds to be dug over and weeds to be pulled.

Please bring a head torch

Meet at Hilsea Lido car park to run or walk up to the task. Runners will take a longer route to get there.

You can also meet us at the task just before 1830 - please comment below if you are taking this option so we know not to wait for you at the Lido. The address is Wymering Manor, Old Wymering Lane, Cosham, PO6 3NL

All Sorts

Wed 29 Sep
Report written by Samantha Belfrage

First of all a huge GoodGym welcome to Harriet who joined us for the first time, she sorted and re-packed bags like a champion, she fitted right in! Tonight Anne and Molly (the dog) from Sams Place charity shop had us sorting bags of stock, tagging unlabeled items and rebagging stock. There are some incredible treasures in that store so do go give them a visit. Rosie and Maxine tackled the many many scarfs and what we termed miscellaneous by the end of the night, which included a tea cosie disguised as a bobble hat! Enjoy the photos and we hope to see you soon!

A sting in the ankles

Wed 22 Sep
Report written by Katie Carew-Robinson

A good turn out today for the first visit to Miltoncross to start to clear the green area so it can be used for eco club, Duke of Edinburgh's Award volunteering, science and geography lessons.

We were joined tonight by Andy Ames from Hampshire & IOW Wildlife Trust, Miss Williams the geography teacher and Charlotte, the senior student who came up with the idea to put the area to use.

There was A LOT of litter to be collected, many years of crisp packets, strange drinks cans (have you heard of "Emoji" drink?), LOADS of pens, an ancient football boot and a disfunctional laptop. We also filled a good few bags with recycling so the site bins are much fuller tonight. Andy used a found piece of guttering to hold some of the plastic bottles when we ran out of bags.

In addition to picking the litter, we also started to clear the old pond area. So. Many. Nettles. It didn't matter what protective clothing you had on, you were guaranteed to go home with more stings than you came with.

We doubled the compost heap, found plenty of wood for the bug hotel and rehomed some beetles and a bee.

90 minutes passed fast and although we made a good dent, there is still loads to do here so we will definitely be back! Watch this space for dates.
