Go on and cake my day

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

Last night 15 GoodGymers came together to celebrate SIX whole years of GoodGym Wandsworth! In that time we have achieved huge things together. Can you believe we have clocked up:

  • 8456 good deeds done by 1109 runners

  • 634 Missions to help older people

  • 533 Group sessions to help community projects

  • 711 Coach visits to an older person

  • 118401 kms run

  • 45729 cheers given

What an amazing legacy...so far! Well done to each and everyone of you who has been a part of it.

We kicked off the evening with a warm up and we were very happy to welcome Amy to her first session - give her a cheer!

Last night's task was at a local community centre where we were replanting flowers that had been donated by Wimbledon Tennis charitable foundation. But first there was a spot of digging to do. Well, that's what we thought at first. It didn't take long for us to realise that the area where we were going to be doing the planting was filled with some rather stubborn roots. However, we were not to be defeated and after some epic battles we were victorious over some of the biggest and toughest roots in Wandsworth.

It wouldn't be a GG Wandsworth party without a bit of compost, so true to form, we shifted and spread many bags of the stuff ready for the plants, some of which looked like they were more than ready to find a new home!

Next came the creative part, and with several of us assuming art director roles we began designing the new bed. Alan Titchmarsh would be proud - check out some of those before and after shots to see the massive difference.

Job done, and it was time for Chi to put the group through their paces with a short but hard core fitness session- although there may have been a relaxed attitude towards the timings (!), it was an effective all over body session which meant everybody was ready for the post-task celebration. And what a celebration it was! Hadas, who runs the Waste Not Want Not charity put on the most incredible spread, with a huge BBQ of jerk chicken, as well as loads of other goodies. There was also some incredible baked goods created by you lovely lot, including an amazing cake made by Catherine.

It's such a pleasure to run with you all, and to see the amazing way you make things happen for the better across the borough and beyond. A very happy birthday to each and every one of you and here's to many more years of GoodGym Wandsworth!

This is going to Yurt

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

On a lovely July evening, eight GoodGymers met to take a trip to Paradise....

Our job for the evening was at Paradise Cooperative Garden, a piece of waste land that has been totally transformed into an incredible garden complete with flower beds, polytunnels, bee hives, learning spaces and one huge yurt. We were really happy to welcome Nick along to his very first session - give him a cheer!

As we were doing our warm up, in recognition of Independence Day in the US, we each took turns in naming US states as we went round the group. I think we did a pretty good job-even getting Alaska in there!

It was a 2.5 km run to the gardens, during which we discovered it was deceptively warm. We soon arrived to find several padlocks to negotiate. Turns out I would be a rubbish burglar, because despite having the codes I could not crack them and had to rely on other, more capable people in the group to get us in!

The three jobs were composting, spreading wood chip and sorting out the inside of the yurt, so we quickly divided into groups and got stuck in. While Catherine and Kelly began transforming the yurt, Jordan and Nick started the very labour intensive job in the compost, and Viviana, Alice and Ali got very inventive with trugs and other utensils to get that wood chip spread. It's amazing what you all achieved in 45 minutes, and it will make a big difference to the Paradise team.

A thankfully slightly more downhill run back to base and we finished the night with stretches and a cool down. This week there is lots going on, from our Friday lunchtime session at a local homeless centre, to a soon-to-be-scheduled mission at a nearby school (watch this space!), to next Monday's new task in Battersea Park at the beautiful Thrive garden. Well done everybody - have a happy week!
