Can't get you out of my SHED

Tue 30 Nov
Report written by Michael

After a rather rainy day, 6 goodgymers were not to be beaten. A smaller run tonight, just the 3km, but this allowed for extra time at the task - and a task it was to be.

After a small quick run we arrived at Samye, and whilst the crew had some water to quench their thirst our organiser Lorraine showed the task to Michael. The shed out back had become full of a lot of items, we needed to empty the entire thing and then move the shed around into a new position before filling it back up.

With six it was a fun game of pass the parcel, with the end person trying to keep items together in groups to make refilling the shed a much easier task. At times it did feel as though we were trying to empty the tardis, as things just kept on coming - we nearly lost Nathan in the shed!

Soon it was empty, and now came the next work out as we pushed and pulled until the shed was in it's new position.

If you were wondering why it needed moving, the extra space next to it will allow for a retreat building for people to come and experience mindfulness.

As we packed the shed once more, there was some additional planning to keep items that would be needed over the next few months, towards the front of the shed. At long, long last the task was complete, and just in time for some warming soup.

Bush Cutter Trial

Tue 9 Nov
Report written by Michael

14 goodgymers met tonight, in the misty dark evening for a lovely quick walk / jog / run to the Samye Foundation in Canton.

But First

Welcome Abbie89 to goodgym Cardiff, and for the second time welcome Ashley.

Good to have you back again Mike, it's been great to see all the coach visits going on with you, great to have you at a group task again too though.

Just a short 3km out and back tonight to Samye, but plenty to do whilst we are there. The dry wipe boards were out in force again already with the tasks at hand,

  • Sweeping up the leaves from around the building,
  • Cutting down the bushes at the back of the building,
  • Moving some bottle of drink from the storage area outside to inside,
  • Vacuuming, mopping the floors in the three buildings,
  • Cleaning down the windowsills,
  • Painting a gold stripe in the one of the rooms.

We separated into our groups as we decided who was doing which tasks and got to work. Michael had the lights ready in his Mary Poppins bag, so popped these up ready for the bush cutter trial. With everyone hard at work it was slightly more difficult to get the photos tonight but was a great opportunity to have a run around the building. The 30 minutes flew by and before we knew it the dinner bell was ringing, the wonderful Lorraine had made us soup, which on a night like this was very welcomed.

Hey Buuuuu-dy..............leia

Tue 28 Sep
Report written by Michael

The rain was a test today, but not to be stopped 8 goodgymers got together ready to hit the wet streets.

Already wet from meeting at the start location, we welcomed our newest runner to goodgym Cardiff and the Vale.

Croeso Rosie, welcome to the team

A short 2.5 km to the task, we took the less busy back streets but gave up on trying to miss the puddles and decided to just enjoy it in our childish way. Plenty of stomping and splashing followed by giggling and full-blown laughter.

As soon as we arrived at the Church of St. Edward our organiser Kathie pulled up in her car, quite amazed that we had still come out in the rain. The crew helped to get the tools and bags out of the boot whilst I set up the lights ready for dark evening that was just around the corner.

Usually, we tackle the buddleia every year to keep it coming back strong and in a good shape, however, covid had meant we had not been available for this last time. You could certainly tell from the height of the shrub that it had been left to grow, we struggled to reach the top so started from the sides.

We worked as quickly as we could with some cutting back, and some just 'hulking' out and ripping the shrub to bits, whilst the rest took the large branches and cut them to better sizes to fit the bags provided for waste collection at another date. As we reached the end of the night, Llion and Michael quickly went to the pavement to cut some of the overhanging trees so that they would not block any of the public walking around.

A quick tidy up, moving the bags to the side of the Church and time for a group photo around what remained of the shrub (still some to do - we shall return to finish this task soon).

Another run back in the rain and a reminder to all, head or body lamps will be required from now onwards to keep us safe!

plog days are over.....(for now)

Tue 31 Aug
Report written by Michael

It has been a while but this week we return to the wonderful World of plogging.

Plogging – The environmental and health movement from Sweden that cleans up the world!

14 goodgymers met outside Sport Wales National Centre eager to get out and do some good. Tonight we were joined by Victoria who was filming some footage for a piece for Buzz magazine.

Plogging has some great benefits, health and exercise helps boost mental and physical well-being, it helps to keep plastic out of the sea, saves wildlife and their habitat and makes local areas generally nicer places to live.

We split into two teams, three were going to head off on a walking plog as they were overcoming injuries. They were going to concentrate on the park whilst the rest of us run along the river Taff to help keep that plastic out of the waterways before heading into town and back to the start location.

It was great to see the gang as they ran off in all directions, all gloved up and picking up rubbish, the bag holders had there work to do running to the ploggers too. It was really nice to hear thanks from passers by, the odd person shouting 'GOODGYM' and meeting the owner of a new ethical, sustainable restaurant who not only thanked us but ran through the park to do so. They will also be going out with staff for a litter pick once opened, maybe some new goodgym members there too?

We had gone only 2.5 km and already we were running out of bags, so Michael ran off to the shop to but some more whilst the group (now led by Nathan) continued on the agreed route. It wasn't too long before the new bags arrived, and all kitted out again we made our way into the city and through the streets, splitting into two group either side of the road to make the most of our numbers.

We made our way to the final location, just outside the Castle on the public seating area whilst flying the goodgym colours. We waited for Victoria for some final shots in the City Centre (can't wait to see the final edited footage) before running back to meet the walkers for a group photo.

goodgym is goodyears ahead (other tyres are available)

Tue 24 Aug
Report written by Michael

Tonight a good 15 gymers got together to help out at a NEW project

Our newest start location was Chapter Arts Centre, making our total run a 7km distance today. Welcome back Adam, it's been so long but feels like you never left.

Michael made the promise of not throwing in extra workouts due to the distance, so we began our warm up over in a car park with the usual high knees, butt kicks etc.

The walk / jog group set off first then the speedy runners 5 minutes later, it was a nice simple straight route for the group session. We arrived just in the nick of time to see the organiser setting up everything that we would need, the tasks were to paint the front of the building to spruce it up, paint some tyres out in the back area to be used as planters once dry, to tidy up the grounds around the side of the building from weeding, hoeing to pruning back the larger vegetation and finally helping to pack up chairs and trestle tables ready for a local charity to borrow in the morning.

We split into teams and got to work, the painters getting busy throwing around the paint to help brighten the Church a bit and the tyres a lot.

Martin and Adam headed inside and began moving trestle tables and then folding chairs and putting them onto the trolley, it didn't take long to complete the work inside so they could then get out and join everyone in the sunshine.

The rest of the crew got busy in the grounds surrounding the building, it didn't take long before the green bin was full and it was all looking much more tidy and clean. We gathered the troop for our group photo, everyone was very chatty tonight but we finally managed a photo.

We made our way back to the start location for some food and a nice social. Next week we will be plogging so get signed up.
