Creating food parcels for families over the holidays

Luton Report written by Martin R
As it near the Easter holidays, local organisation Breakfast Battery Boxes 📦 will be supporting the community in Luton North over the next couple of weeks. Today Charmaine and I prepared some food parcels ready for Tuesday when BBBs will open their doors to support vulnerable families and individuals. It was a really quick task, but we were glad to help.

This weeks group run saw the latest effort to Keep Britain Tidy by doing our bit to Keep Luton Tidy for the Great British Spring Clean.
Most importantly it was Gail's 50th task! Gail has been on the team since before GoodGym Luton started so we're fairly sure she's done more than 50! Definitely well deserving of a shiny new black shirt!
We took the long road up to Farley Hill, rising up out of town to be treated with a panoramic view of the twinkling lights. Arriving at the Farley Hill Community Centre we met Martin with The litter pickers and set work collecting litter from around the community centre, the shops and the playground here. Four bags later we set off again on the return journey back down the hill into town.

Yesterday evening Gill David and myself went along to Azalea, to return all the boxes and bedding that the GG Luton team had moved on a group run a few months ago, back to the newly refurbished basement area. Our task hosts were very grateful to see us and we made light work of the task before us. It took us around 30 minutes to move all the goods from the 1st floor down 2 flights of stairs to the basement. It was sweaty work but we dud a good job and took a well deserved sit down at the end on the sofas that under all the bits we had moved. Well done team.

We were a pretty efficient team, and received a seasonal reward too. :-)

Today I spent an hour with Mrs K, trimming the hedge in her front garden. It had lots of whispy bits sticking out all over the place and was in need of a little attention. I got to work with my secateurs and before to long the hedge was a delight for the whole neighbourhood to see. After brushing up the cuttings, I bagged it all up and my host took it to her bin. Whilst I was there and after a quick glass of water, I picked up some litter that had blown into her garden, which Mrs K was extremely grateful for. This was a nice task for a Sunday morning and i'd be happy to help out at Mrs K's again if needed (pics are AI generated as I didn't get a photo of the finished job)

This week there was a last minute change of plans as our task owner wasn't available so it was time for a plogging circuit with this week's Three Amigos: Martin, Duncan and David.
We picked the litter we found as we worked our way along the streets in the Dallow direction, popping handfuls of rubbish in the bins we found along the way. occasionally stopping to deal with particularly bad spots. When we got to Dallow Downs we went through the woods and up the hill to Winsdon Hill. No bins on this section but tons of trash so it didn't look like we could help much. But then what's that? Among the trees someone had helpfully dumped a wheelie bin, just what we needed to get the waste out of the woods.
Working our way up the hill with the wheelie bin getting heavier as we went we arrived at the top with a full load. Back on tarmac we carried on through Farley Hill, across to Stockwood Park and then back downhill into town to complete a litter-free loop.
