Leafletting For Get Rid Of & Donate

Tue 2 Nov 18:45 pm
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
Spread the word so more people donate their unused stuff!

Get Rid Of And Donate (GROAD) do amazing work taking people's unused clothes, homeware, furniture and toys and repurposing it for their refugee and rough sleeper projects. They rely on a steady stream of donations, and spreading the word through flyering is one of the best way to make people aware.

We'll be running 3km to North Dulwich and then run/walking around the houses dropping leaflets through letter boxes.

New to GG Lambeth? We're a super friendly group who meet at Papa's Park near Brixton Station at 7pm on Tuesdays. We run to a local organisation, do a physical task for them and run back by 8:30. You can leave things in Papa's Cafe where there's a loo too! Email me if you've got any questions??

How Deep Is Your Bulb? #RunBrightatNight

Tue 26 Oct
Report written by Mark Gilyead

Well either 3cm or 10 cm, depending on the size of the bulb.

Tonight's task and accompanying subject matter was all about bulbs and keeping light!

We met at Papa's, welcomed Hannah to her first GoodGym run 🥳 and discussed different types of light 💡 with some very clever/somewhat questionable answers... Former GG Lambeth runner/legend (and now GG York Area Activator!) Nicky wanted to start a conversation about how important it is to make ourselves visible when running at night. Our red tees are pretty good, but some reflective strips/those fancy silver jackets are definitely a good shout.

#RunBrightatNight

And suggestions of using headtorches, regular torches and light bulbs fit in very well with the evening's task...

We split into a couple of groups, going 2 or 4k to Fairholme House which provides sheltered accommodation. When we arrived, Anke and Conrad showed us a very well prepared area of grass, with a perfect number of trowels (and one spinny bulb apple corer type gizmo) and a selection of different bulbs - snowdrops, daffodils and fritallia meleagris which really are chequered! 🤯

How Deep Is Your Bulb?

Anke explained how bulbs need to be planted at twice the depth of the bulb's size (e.g. 1.5cm bulb needs to be covered in 3cm soil) - useful to know!

We whizzed through the task, and were done in 20 minutes! We took a quick snap and then headed back via Wyck Gardens for some Rock, Paper, Scissors action (feat. sprints, wall sits and squats).

This evening's bakes were kindly provided by Aislin - some mouthwateringly delicious sticky toffee muffins. 🤤😋🧁

Planting Bulbs at Fairholme House

Tue 26 Oct 18:45 pm
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
Surprise the residents in the Spring with some beautiful blooms

Fairholme House provides sheltered accommodation and we've previously helped out with spreading some woodchip and compost turning.

This week we're back with community gardening heroes Urban Growth to help plant a load of bulbs.

It'll be dark so please bring a headtorch if you can - And gardening gloves too please! It's 2km away but we'll have a longer run option for those that fancy it.

No Mossing Around

Tue 12 Oct
Report written by Mark Gilyead

Puns today courtesy of Michael 🙏

A great atmossphere

Dayum it gets dark so early now. Nevermind. The darkness wouldn’t put off our team of 12 wonderful GoodGymers!

Tonight’s task took us to Brixton Road Youth Centre where we met Sharron and Kathy who had a pretty mossy job for us...

The ground clearly gets pretty moist and lockdown had given the moss a chance to grow on a lot of the ground around the youth centre. Our job was to scrape it up with shovels and rakes and bag it up with as many leaves as possible. Michael also was given an extra job of trimming some trees back away from the path with some pretty funky secateurs. ✂️🌿

It was a tough challenge, with some nasty scraping noises and some seriously stubborn moss, but in the end we had a good 10 bags of leaves, moss and tree cuttings!

Blink and you’ll moss it

On the way back, we had a few pitstops for some lunges, press ups, tricep dips, wall-sits (X2) 😏 and a few quick squats before the traffic lights went green.

It moss be love.

Great stuff everyone!

Next week we’re helping out GROAD to sort some donations and pack some bags for rough sleepers - click here to sign up!

Mulch A-Doing

Sat 9 Oct
Report written by Nathan Wood

It was a surprisingly sunny day, after the foggy morning we had - which made great conditions to work under.

Lindy and I turned up and helped with moving a few pieces that had been identified for some recycling, to be used in the gardens. We then made quick work of shifting the compost - big fat maggots and worms included. And lastly, we continued Sam's work (looked very tidy - Kudos to Sam!) on laying cardboard and mulch on the wilder patch the Thorlands team are developing. A good amount of work for a Saturday morning.

SHELF LYF

Tue 5 Oct
Report written by Mark Gilyead

After a last minute change of task, tonight’s crew were off to Jubilee Primary School for some lifting and shifting.

We met at PAPA’s, shared our favourite biscuit (19 people with nearrllyy 19 different biscuit types 😯), welcomed Freya to her first GG run🎉 and had a quick warm up before hitting the road.

Sarah led a 4k route and the rest of us took the direct 2k route and we got cracking on with 2 tasks:

In the Library: we were shifting shelves, books, games and huge boxes into a cupboard.

In the Car Park: we were chucking some big planks of wood into the skip.

Squat, skip & jump

Both teams finished at exactly the same time, and we had a chaotic game of Rock, Paper, Scissors in the playground. Lose and you do squat jumps up to (What’s the time) Mr Wolf. Win and you sprint to the other side, do 5 press ups and run back.

We ran back, did some stretches and then had some ginger & coconut biscuits!

Here’s the link to sign up to next week’s run!

Sanding and painting benches at Hillside Gardens

Tue 5 Oct 18:45 pm
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
Providing quality seating at this lovely green space!

Hillside Gardens Park is a fab spot on the way to Streatham which has a great team of volunteers, but they've asked for a hand with sanding down some benches and painting on some wood preservative!

It'd be great if you can bring gardening gloves and head torch would be awesome too! 🧤💡🧤

It's about 3.5k each way and a bit of a hilly one 👌

Raking leaves at Brixton Road Youth Centre

Tue 12 Oct 18:45 pm
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
And bagging them up

The leaves have been falling again at Brixton Road Youth Centre, so we're going back for our regular job of sweeping them up and bagging them. Our record is about 30 bags - can we beat it!?

We then stick them on the kerbside so the council can take them and use them for compost! 👌
