It's Chipping cold

Wandsworth Report written by Chi Nwa

Weather it’s rain, sleet or snow, Goodgym Wandsworth will always shine in the show. A big shoutout to the Team who made it because yesterdays weather should never be underestimated. It was a a humble size group according the to Wandsworths numbers best but I am was confident that we was might enough to put the job to rest.

7pm came and we all looked nervously outside to see if the rain will ever subside. Luckily it did, and with a quick warm up with a little introduction to everyone’s job, we set off quick.

Over hearing some people speaking sounds like the introducing everyone and the jobs they are into became a nice little greeting. We took the scenic route to the site but Beth told me there is a shortcut and we got there avoiding all matters of traffic lights.

The first task involved some muscle work with moving the compost from one site to about 100 meters away into the garden. Some opted for the teamwork option while others showed their confidence by carrying it themselves. Beth had an interesting bear hug tug technique that got her through to the finish lines. As it was still raining, I suggested the group to try and keep running so they don’t get to cold.

Once that task was completed, we crystal mazed it to the other end of the garden to hear what else Helare had in store for us. The group got split up into teams. We had one team cleaning the green house. They were enthusiastic and very efficient. They green house looked dirt free afterwards from what I could see. Another group was making a path with some soggy chip wood. As it was cold I can see they were doing it in haste, they had no time to waste because they wanted to find heat in that place. The final group was on bathtub duty. They had to move the bath tub from one place to another. As easy as that sounded. They had to take the soil from the bath tub before its new home was founded.

With all the task done we headed back the way Beth suggested, we got much quicker and was ready to feel rested. But before I let the group go, I had to do the final tradition and putting them through a abs workout that will have them near submission.

The group deserved the treats that were laid out, the help they gave today definitely helped the estate out.

Don’t forget to look out for news on the Goodgym Games, The free Hackney 5k and The Spartan Races.

Flyering didn’t get the batter of us

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

It's a busy old week in GoodGym land, which kicked off with our lovely group run last night - we even got to welcome two new runners to the group. Shout out to Abbie and Stacey who joined us for their very first session last night. Welcome!

Before we could get going helping the community, we had lots of news to share. Here's a quick recap!

  • There's a great community mission coming up on Saturday, and you can even get a parkrun in beforehand if you want! A community association really needs a hand moving mulch for their tree planting day on Saturday, as their members can't manage the physical activity very easily. Here's your chance to be a community hero, get a good workout, and help change our public spaces for the better. There are even tea and biscuits on offer - what's not to love?! Sign up here.

  • Don't forget that next Monday is the weekly GoodGym social. 2-4-1 burgers at the Four Thieves immediately after the run, don't miss out! Sign up and details are here

  • If you missed out on the sign up to volunteer at the Hackney Half on 17th May, then don't worry, they've added another aid station. You get a free future race place for your trouble, and it's lovely day out cheering on other runners. Have a look at the link here.

  • Good luck to all the Big Halfers this weekend - run well and enjoy!

Ahead of pancake today today we discussed our favourite toppings after our warm up. There were a few savoury choices such as ricotta and spinach and chicken, but nutella, bananas, maple syrup and of course the classic lemon and honey were the real crowd pleasers.

Full of thoughts of pancakey joy we set off on the short run to providence House to meet with Esther, who runs the youth programs at this great organisation. For the last 50 years Providence House Youth Club has been passionate about improving the lives of young people in Battersea and one of their key goals is to provide a sense of community and identity, offering an alternative to anti-social behaviour and social isolation.

The charity is putting on a performance by its young people celebrating an evening of emerging young talent and showing that anything is possible. (If you're interested, you can get your tickets here - it's set to be a great night of young talent including bands, dancers, solo singer and rappers). They needed a hand spreading the word to get as many people as possible buying tickets, and asked us to help by delivering leaflets locally.

We got straight to it, starting in the Winstanley estate near PH, and making our way through the streets dropping leaflets through letterboxes as we went. Esther had told us she had about 500 ready for us, and it was amazing to see how quickly you guys delivered the lot. That is definitely energy very well spent!

We got rid of our last few at Kambala and then ran steadily over to the park where we did our fitness for the evening. This session focused on high intensity sprints, sandwiched between conditioning exercises that centred on arms and core. There were some serious effort going on, and it was very impressive to watch! Well done team.

All that was left of our Monday night GoodGym was to take a gentle run back to base, and stretch it out. Next we have a new task location to looks forward to, hope to see you there. Have a great week everyone, and run happy!

You’re unbeleafable!

Wandsworth Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

It was the last group run of January last night in Wandsworth - and what a month of doing good and getting fit it's been! It was great to see 37 runners meeting to help out at a community garden. We also welcomed Benjamin, Rachel and Grainne to the group - give them a cheer!

We started off the night with some news:

  • Free this lunchtime and want to squeeze in a quick and very helpful mission? Then look no further than this one for Free2Be, a charity which supports LGBTQ+ young people in Wandsworth. They need a hand moving their office, and have GoodGym to help out at 12pm at their offices near Clapham Junction.

  • It's the last week of the January challenge - just one final push to make the 8000 good deeds and 100 000 kms we've got as a target. Wandsworth is looking good with 179 good deeds and 1,636 - can we get any more in before January runs out?

  • It's the monthly Wandsworth social next week - hope to see you after for the session for 2-4-1 burgers and post-run fun. Sign up for all the details

We headed outside to do our warm up and, as it was the last run of January, to discuss whether we had kept to any new year's resolutions we had made. Quite a few of us had avoided making one altogether, but there have been some excellent successes - eating fewer biscuits, doing something that challenges us (like Frances jumping into a freezing January Brockwell lido!), coming to GoodGym (hooray), and doing first parkruns.

We set off on our run down to Christchurch community garden, a small public space in the middle of Battersea that a group of volunteers are trying to make as welcoming as possible for local people. They have some beautiful mature trees there but a problem with the leaves they drop which are stopping other plants from growing and causing a nuisance on the paths.

When we arrived we found volunteer Nigel waiting for us with loads of bin bags, gloves and some litter pickers, and we got to it. While one group started on the rubbish people had chucked over from the nearby bus stop, the rest of us started clearing leaves - and if you've ever wondered how many bags of leaves a team of 37 people can fill in half an hour (and why wouldn't you?) then the answer is a phenomenal number. Just check out those photos!

We took a short jog over to the local park for our fitness, which this week was all about teamwork. After pairing up we took a quick lap around the park, high fived our partner, and then raced them back to base, before working on some conditioning exercises such a partner pistol squats and back to back holds. There was some pretty impressive balancing going on, and a lot of trust! Nice work everyone.

With the hill waiting for us at the end of the run, we set off for base, and finished the night off with some stretching. Fancy more fun and fitness next week? Then sign up here for your weekly dose of GoodGym Wandsworth. Until then, run happy!
