Round Sheffield Run winter edition

Sun 8 Jan 09:15 am
Endcliffe Park, Rustlings Road, Sheffield, S11 7AB
Happiness

If you want to be happier in 2023 this event is a must.

I really enjoyed the first ever edition of the run, especially because I was able to run alongside friends for most of it.

We had a really strong GoodGym Yorkies group last time and the plan is to replicate that.

What to expect at the event:

*Climbing steep stairs;

*Round Sheffield route starts and finishes in Endcliffe Park;

*Climbing seep stairs;

*11 timed stages with unique character totalling 20km of great trails & Parkland;

*Running uphill on a frozen path;

*9 Liason stages in between timed stages that allow recovery (100m - 750m in length);

*Running downhill on a frozen path;

*600m of total vertical elevation;

*More steps;

*2 mega feed-stations on route, as well as BBQ, street food and beer at the finish line;

*Really muddy last 800m 'sprint finish' stage;

*Digital timing system so you can compare your efforts with friends;

*Did I mention hills and steps?;

*Fully way-marked and marshalled course to provide support and encouragement;

Most of us are aiming for the 9am / 9:15am start slots.

We can discuss transport/car sharing nearer to the time.

Entries are now open on SiEntries.

So, will you be joining us?

Moving rocks and weeding at Rowntree Park

Mon 15 Aug 18:15 pm
York CVS, Denham Room, 15 Priory Street , York , YO1 6ET
Supporting the development of the wildlife area

Welcome to GoodGym York πŸ™Œ

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒWe're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. Every Monday we meet to get active and do a physical task to help the charities or community organisations in our city.

TONIGHT'S TASK πŸ™Œ We've been asked to move lots of heavy rocks, from the Reading Cafe to the new wildlife area. This guarantees a good workout and as it's a little bit of a trek from one end of the park to the other, we'll probably work in pairs, in case you need to swap barrowing arms halfway! The rocks will be going to the new wildlife area, which is very exciting! For anyone that doesn't fancy the heavy lifting (or perhaps would like to have a break from it!), there is weeding to be done on the cafe balcony. (This can only be done on an evening so it's the ideal time for it.)

🧀 As we'll be lifting rocks, please bring gardening gloves if possible and don't forget to be kind to your back (lift from the knees please!). If lifting isn't your thing, we'll try and make sure there are alternative jobs available!

WHERE WE MEET πŸŽ’ We meet at the Priory Street Centre and our usual room is the Denham Room. As you approach the front of the Centre, turn right and go to the car park area. The room we use is locked whilst we're out so you can leave your bits and bobs in there.

😷 We are asking people still to wear a face mask when entering the building to drop bags off where possible.

🚲There is cycle parking as you approach the Centre and a 10 bay pay and display car park is available behind the nursery block, to the left as you approach front of the Centre. In addition, on street parking is available on Priory Street.

TONIGHT 🌱We’re heading to Greenfields Community Garden tonight to help make it a more pleasant environment for everyone who uses it.

RUNNING AND WALKING WITH US πŸ‘GoodGym is for everyone. We welcome runners of all abilities and if the task is close enough we have a walking group too.

πŸ‘We always have a back-marker too so nobody will get left behind - no matter what your pace is.

POST-RUN SOCIAL 🍻We normally head to The Ackhorne Pub on St Martin's Lane after our run for a spot of liquid refreshment and a good chat. Please join us!

Guy Fawkes 10 mile in Ripley

Sun 6 Nov 10:00 am
Ripley Village Hall,, Martin Street, , Ripley, , HG3 3AY
Hilly and pretty, what more could you want?!

Some of us are doing this lovely race. Think undulating but scenic, all on road, and if that doesn't persuade you then a great (ie chocolatey) goody bag at the end hopefully will.

Sign up here when you can (it's likely to sell out, though we don't know exactly when) and hopefully see you there!

Heatwave social

Mon 18 Jul 18:15 pm
The Ackhorne, 9 St. Martin's Lane,, York, YO1 6LR
Spend time socialising indoors away from the heat with your GoodGym pals

With the extreme weather forecast and subsequent cancellation of our group run on Monday, Dom has suggested a heatwave-friendly alternative pub night.

Meet at the Ackhorne Pub whenever you can get there and enjoy some refreshing hydration and a good catch up.

Kathryn Lewis has earned their community cape by completing their first community mission. Wed 6 Jul 2022

Kathryn completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Kathryn was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.

Eight GG Yorkies ventured out into the North York Moors to support a local fell running group. With only the organiser Dave and a couple of other people, without our help they could not have put on the event.

We began by directing traffic to the car park and Nick did a fine job of getting the cars parked up in an orderly fashion. One van had to reverse back out when the driver realised he’d left his running shoes πŸ‘Ÿ at home! ☹️

Debs arrived to join us helpers along with a couple of fellow Yorkies who were running. Myself, Nick and Debs then drove out a short distance to our first marshalling point where we had to get the runners safely across a fast road. Mitch and Louise were timekeeping (using old-style parkrun-type timers) ⏱ and Kathryn and Laura were on the finish funnel noting down the runner numbers as they finished. Michal was the tail runner with the task of collecting in the direction marker sticks on his way (one of which he missed and ended up taking one runner an extra km or so)!

Our marshalling trio got thoroughly windswept (and a tad chilly) so were glad to move on to our next marshalling point further along the road. Here we had to cross the runners safely on a blind bend. Debs ventured through the ferns and bracken to be a Marshall β€œscarecrow” to guide the runners in the right direction (this part was a change to the original route). However this was only semi successful as lots of the runners came up the road towards us instead of through the fields and some came from the opposite direction! A few made it to us vaguely on the correct route (we think) especially after Debs went further along the route to stop the runners from missing the turn.

Finally we saw Michal and the last couple of runners appearing through the undergrowth and we pointed them on their way. The signs were collected and squashed in the boot and we headed back to base to wait for the last runners to arrive.

Prizes were given out (and leftover beers distributed amongst the volunteers) then it was just time for a group photo and we headed off as it was starting to get dark.

Report written by Nick Griffin

It was a beautiful Summer evening in York and although we had to make do without leader Nicky (detained with family COVID) we got to welcome Suzie from GoodGym Leeds and we welcomed back Becky from Prague too.

After reviving Paul Anderson's old bean based warm up - Runner Beans, String Beans, Jumping Beans, Broad Beans, Baked Beans, French Beans and probably some other random beans too (dont think we managed Sean Bean or Mr Bean) we celebrated Louise's 200th good deed πŸ‘and set off for a 2k run out to meet Kristina at West Bank park.

There was a sizeable walking group led by Amy - mainly because Team GoodGym had been running at Endure24 in Leeds last weekend - 485 miles were run by the 3 teams while the pair of Becky Mo and Michael ran 70 miles each as did David B solo! Phew! πŸ™ŒπŸƒπŸ½β€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

Kristina soon had us split into 3 groups. The first group went off to grapple with Geraniums in the rose arbor where Prostrate Pete seemed to spend most of his time lying down. The Geraniums needed pruning back so they would flower again (without chopping up the roses - Barbara insisted she caused no collateral damage despite wielding her shears with abandon). 🌹

Meanwhile group 2 were in the leaf mould compost bins digging out the good stuff and rotating the not so good compost into another bin - like compost bin juggling although every time I came by Debs was just standing in the compost and Paul was mainly leaning on a spade. They then barrowed the good leaf mould over to the wildflower beds - mostly walking but Egg running obviously - where group 3 of Kathryn, Stefan & Ed were waiting to gently rake it all in - seemed very peaceful up that end.

There was just time for a Tubthumping work out of skipping and burpees (Tamar specially requested lots of burpees) to the sound of Chumbawamba - look out for the photo of Levitating Lucy - before we headed off for a trot back to cool down at the pub - no cake this week (very poor) but its the Monthly Social next week so maybe better luck then?!

πŸ₯³ Monthly GoodGym social πŸ™Œ

Mon 11 Jul 20:00 pm
The Ackhorne, 9 St. Martin's Lane,, York, YO1 6LR
Join us at The Ackhorne after our group run

πŸŽ‰ Although we go to the pub after the group run every Monday evening, we thought we'd start a monthly social for people who can't join every week.

πŸ™‹πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈThe first 20-minutes-ish will be a chance for anyone to give any feedback or suggestions of how we do things. Everyone is welcome to this (Taskforce or not!) and if you'd rather not join that bit, you don't have to!

🍰 Oh, and there may well be baked goods.
