Community Mission impossible - here ghost nothing!

Southwark Report written by Lucy J

Southwark News

  • She's been doing good since May 2017, she's a prolific gatherer of wild garlic. Yes that's right, Girija reached her 50th good deed tonight! A huge congrats to Girija, looking forward to seeing her in her black tshirt soon!

  • This Saturday 3rd November Anna has organised an amazing Community Mission to clear up Crisis at Christmas's warehouse in Bermondsey so that it's ready for use over Christmas. Crisis at Christmas provides shelter and services to people without a home over the Christmas period so we are delighted to be abe to support them. Find out more and sign up here.

  • Next Thursday 8th November is the last monthly GoodGym Social of the year. Expect International Pun of the Month and Treasure Thursday (bring your race bling). This week it's in Bethnal Green, find out more here.

  • Don't forget the GoodGym Christmas party is on 1st December and we're having a decorations making party on 24th November.

  • Next week we're going back to Theatre Deli to do another coat on the floor - sign up here.

That's enough of the business

Last night was quite the adventure! Liz at Grove Park Allotments got stuck on a train so couldn't make it BUT lo and behold, there was a community mission happening in Herne Hill so off we set!

We arrived en masse to see what we could do. The Community Missioners had done most of the work already but there were still about 7 gazebos standing. After a quick briefing we set to work taking them down. We got it done so quickly! The Herne Hill Forum were surprised and delighted to have us there and said that they were able to go for pizza much earlier because of us. A good deed for sure!

Fa-boo-lous dress-up last night, super scary!

We helped the team pack away all the gazebos and tables and set off for the run home. We ended up running nearly 8km overall. An amazing job everyone considering it was advertised as a 3km run. We were a flashmob for good last night!

After we went next door to Batch for spooky cocktails (or just beer!).

Great work team, see you next week!

A GoodGym Crypt-ogram? It's par for the course

Southwark Report written by Lucy J

Southwark News

  • This Saturday is the long September GoodGym long run. It's about 17km following the Wandle trail and ending with the pub (hooray!). Find out more and sign up here.

  • Headtorches! The season is coming - here's an example of a good'un

  • We had a cancellation for next week so keep an eye on the website for updates and sign up here!.

  • Hello and welcome to Arran who did his first ever good deed with us last night!

  • Hopefully we'll be back in Old Spike next week and not meeting in Batch, I'll keep you updated!

That's enough of the business

No I haven't written a cryptogram specially for this report....

Last night it was a brand new and spooky trip to see the Friends of Nunhead Cemetery. who work hard to promote the conservation and appreciation of the cemetery as a place of remembrance, of historic importance and of natural beauty. They're getting ready for visitors this weekend as part of Open House London - check out the Open House website there's some amazing opportunities! We ran the 1.5km there, stopping (of course) to do a spot of wall-sitting, this time Helena was in control of how long for. She's a hard task master!

Our jobs were:

  • Weeding the old chapel floor (lots of scraping involved!)

  • Cleaning chairs

  • Taking the chairs down into the Crpyt for storage

As the light dwindled on us, headtorches were out and we did an amazing job clearing the floor. Jeff was absolutely thrilled. We even got a little tour of the Crypt which is still full of coffins! Nunhead Cemetery was the most expensive and desireable place to be buried in London when it was consecrated in the 1840s. I'm looking forward to a daylight look-around! We headed back at 20.00 and as it's a 1.5km run each way we had some time to spare which meant time for mini circuits hooray! These involved pressups, star jumps, burpies and squat jumps. We did one round of each exercises followed by a lovely yogic cool down.

Great work team!

We headed back to Batch - sadly Old Spike had a break in last week so they've changed the locks and I haven't got a key yet - where Phil had water ready for us.

Plonk!

It's the third Wednesday of the month so it's social time! We headed to Peckham Levels to eat some food and play some crazy golf. We split into two teams, there were some cracking holes in one and some rather more prolonged battles with difficult courses. Team 2 had the overall lowest score with the top golfer of the whole group being Tristan.

It was great, we must definitely Plonk again soon!

See you next week, Lucy

Call it a GoodLife Crisis!

Southwark Report written by Lucy J

  • Next week we're going to Nunhead Cemetery to help sort out the chapel. 3km run total - sign up here.

  • Headtorches! The season is coming - here's an example of a good'un

That's enough of the business

A big hello and welcome to Venetia, Frankie and Helen who joined us for the first time.

After a fairly silly warm up - yes, remembering what you had for dinner last night is legitimate exercise - we headed into the beautiful pink and orange sunset to Camberwell Green. Just over 2.5km to the Crisis shop at Camberwell where we were met by Anca and split up to tackle severals tasks:

  • Taking down anything summery from the shop floor ready for the winter donations to go up

  • Redressing manaquins in wintery clothes

  • Tagging and hangering the winter donations

  • Tidying the stock room to make it safer for volunteers

  • Colour coding the shop window rails

  • Pegging autumn leaves to the rails and displays

We got the stock room cleaned up, all the wintery donations tagged and on hangers and most of the shop floor completely changed over. What an amazing job everyone, Anca was delighted! The work we did would have taken the shop volunteers at least a day.

Waving goodbye to Anca we set off back to base. We can't wait to go back.

See you next week!

Can you bee-lieve it's not butter, but it's not butter it's GoodGym!

Southwark Report written by Lucy J

21 runners ran 8km to empty planters and do a general tidy up at Camberwell Subterranea

Southwark News

  • We're doing a parkrun takeover! 8th September, Peckham Rye Parkrun. Bring your red (or black) tshirt and a smile. If you're interested in pacing sign up on the spreadsheet. Let us know you're coming here.

  • Rutland Water, the penultimate of the Big Six this year is coming up. Sunday 16th September - there's a half marathon, a marathon and a marathon relay. Find out more here.

  • A big woop to our new runners - Caitlin, Sarah, Natalie, Emma and Eleanor! Give them a cheer!

That's enough of the bee-sness

Bee-n and done it!

Last night a whopping 21 of us went Camberwell Subterranea (part of Bee Urban) to meet Nick. We split into two groups - one 'in a hurry' and one at 'party pace'. The 'in a hurry' group arrived first (because they're in a hurry!) and Nick put them to work. There were countless planters on the roof where the bees hives are that had shrivelled up in all the heat and needed bringing down. The good earth in them then needed spreading on the planters below by the bike workshop. We shifted at least 15 planters! Core blimey!

It was heavy work but we got all of them spread out on the fruit trees and such like. We also set about generally clearing up the area - sweeping leaves and moving rubbish. It was all fun and games - Theo found a mandrake!

Looking forward to seeing you next week when we're off to Galleywall Nature Reserve, it's a 7km total run. Sign up here.

Keep running happy!

Lucy
