Rock, Stock and Wheelbarrows

Oxford Report written by Anwen Greenaway

With Earth Day right around the corner it was great to be back working away with Oxford Urban Wildlife Group in Boundary Brook Nature Park.

The three acres of land at the Nature Park gave us plenty of space to divide into work teams and spread out across the hidden gem of a site.

Pathway Team
The wildlife group is planning a series of gravel paths, intending to make the Nature Park pathways passable even in the soggiest weather. Our teams laid the first stage of two long stretches of the paths heading off in different directions across Boundary Brook Nature Park. The path-layers got a good upper body workout shovelling limestone rocks and wheelbarrowing them across the site to spread. They made lovely long stretches of meandering paths, using up the whole limestone gravel heap.

Litter team
A litter-picking team scouted the perimeter of the Nature Park. The pathways surrounding the site are a hotspot for litter, and a huge amount ends up inside the railings. Trying to avoid total entanglement in the brambles we unearthed cans, bottles, bike locks, shoes, balls, tyres, even a car bumper! (No pants though.) Some lucky timing meant we were able to load our full bags straight onto an Oxford Direct Services truck for disposal.

Fence posts team
Flexing their arm muscles the third team started driving in posts for new fencing. 4 in, many more to do next time.

It was lovely to be out and about working on a project which maintains and conserves wildlife in Oxford, and helps local people discover the city’s wildlife and wild places. You can find out more about Boundary Brook Nature Park here.

Well done on reaching the 10 Good Deeds milestone Ruth!

Welcome Sarah, Bronwyn, and Claire. Good to meet you!

Heather completed a community mission. Instead of watching TV or lying in bed, Heather was out there making their community a better place to be. For making that choice they have earned the community cape.

Brace your ‘elf

Oxford Report written by Anwen Greenaway

Well, we're out of lockdown and into Advent: the Christmas countdown is on!

The food parcels we deliver on Wednesdays for Oxford Mutual Aid show no sign of reducing in number. This week we had a few extras on the list - a whopping 30 parcels to get to people.

Our parcels comprised 29 deliveries to regulars, and 1 emergency parcel for someone self-isolating to ensure they don't go hungry this week. The food parcels comprise a mixture of fresh and tinned goods, bread, pastries, and pre-prepared meals from the Oxford Mutual Aid Kitchen Collective. Not everyone has cooking facilities, so we do our best to ensure they still have a variety of options to see them through the week. We always also send out several packs of nappies, baby formula, baby food and baby clothes in Wednesday's parcels.

These are a lifeline to people. It's about sharing what we have as a community, not charity.

We have a policy of not sending any GoodGymer out on a delivery on their own, so most pair up, with our largest group a team of 6 - making sure we adhere to the Tier 2 rules. It's an important bit of social interaction for all of us as we are missing the day-to-day camaraderie of our workplaces and socialising with family and friends.

Welcome Heather. We're so happy you came to join us today, but really sad about your bike being stolen.

Big round of applause to Rob for reaching 100 Good Deeds tonight - 50 of those done in Oxford (largely with Oxford Mutual Aid) since transfering to us from Bath in September! Thanks for the celebratory flapjacks Bethan, and thank you to all of you who brought donations tonight - they are very much appreciated.
