Leafing our best life

Hounslow Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

With all the hot weather recently we have been accelerated into Autumn, and the result is leaves. Lots of leaves everywhere. This has proved a particular problem at a local school where the playground has been under assault from the sea of leaves dropping from their huge plane trees all over the playground, so local environmental charity Cultivate called us in to help tackle the problem.

After a warm run/bike over to the school we met the rest of the group and saw the scale of the issue. Luckily Divya had spent the previous evening clearing leaves at a local park so had the technique sorted, while the rest of us tried and tested a combination of approaches including raking, bucket scooping and the ever faithful but time consuming collection by hand.

As we worked, Beth and I discussed another pressing issue -the lack of new puns related to leaves for the run report. Beth came up with the excellent 'Don't stop be-leafing', but we both agreed the supply of leaf word play is well and truly exhausted...if anybody has any new suggestions then we'd love to hear them!

After 45 minutes of work we had swept, packed, bagged and piled, and after Romina tested the resilience and comfort of the pile with one flying leap into the middle of them, we did our final tally. I can reveal that...drum roll...we managed an epic 52 bags. I don't beleaf it!

Next week's group task is just being confirmed, so look out for that, but don't forget about the brilliant ongoing task set up by Michelle for the local food bank. happy GoodGyming one and all.

Rolling by the river

Hounslow Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

With Halloween coming up, we did our very own GoodGym trick last night - using just two rollers between 10 GoodGymers to turn a long bare wall and overgrown pathway into a sparkling freshly painted and welcoming area for local people.

During our warm up and run down to the task we discussed horror movies - it was a unanimous no thank you very much from us - and how we would all fare as a contestant on Squid Games. We agreed GoodGym sessions have been a very helpful grounding for it, and all that work on agility, balance and coordination, not to mention some of our more challenging tasks, has been excellent practice.

Arriving to find just two rollers and a massive expanse of wall, we were not deterred and while painting commenced, everybody else got busy pulling up weeds, pressure washing and litter picking. We were accompanied by the beautiful sound of Lucy's singing, as she magically converted every conversation into a song to keep us focussed and entertained as we worked.

Given the restrictions we had, I think the team did pretty well! The area is now plastic free, sparkling with fresh paint, with no weeds and swept clean - hopefully this will prevent people from throwing away litter which gets in to the waterways and help them keep the slipway by Kew Bridge clean and tidy!

For the 'treat' portion of the night, we alternated between running and strength exercises on our return leg, particularly enjoying the progressive squat pose. We finished off with a sprint and some stretches, before talking about next week's task at a local school. Please bring headtorches if you have them! Until then, have a spooky, treat-filled week of running GoodGym!

You’ve gotta roll with it

Hounslow Report written by Michelle

Luis, JP and Michelle made their way to St Luke's Mission Church to help local vicar and GG member Ellis with a paint job.

The church is preparing for the back room to be used as a clothes bank, to support the community in Hounslow.

Along with the lovely Denise, who made us tea and gave us possibly the best biscuit selection in GG history, we rollered and cut in three walls in no time.

Hammer time

Hounslow Report written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

We were back at Cultivate London last night - a wonderful charity which repurposes unused land in London to grow nurseries and train young people. Our job was to break down pallet boxes and remove nails so that they can be used to build raised beds and beautiful bug hotels.

We were soon hard at work, talking about the hills (or lack of them) in the area, epic cycle rides and singing Hammer related songs. we were only slightly perturbed by the alarming sounds of foxes - or were they frogs or squirrels? - screaming away in the background.

After 40 minutes of hard work we had a pile of de-nailed planks ready to be repurposed and all that was left to do was a group photo before heading back off into the chilly night. Next week we're back to Turnham Green, so bring along your headtorches if you have them. Until then, happy running!
