Getting stuck in at Reading Repair Cafe

Reading Report written by Jenni H

Sam, Jenni and Chris helped out at Reading Repair Cafe's monthly drop in session. The repair cafe helps people to repair their broken items, from sewing, to soldering!

Sam and Jenni were on the welcoming desk, getting people's items in the repair queue, while Chris got to work on fixing a vacuum cleaner he'd brought in. Sam had also brought a hairdryer and a blender in and was able to repair both!

Sion also joined us and helped out with some electrical testing of a carpet cleaner, with everyone learning how to PAT test electronic items too!

Throughout the afternoon, there was no end to people coming in with items and most of them were able to be repaired!

With recording everything that had come in, we were able to help save 46kg of items from being thrown away, reducing 202kg of CO2 emissions! Not bad for an afternoon of learning and helping!

Weed it and reap

Reading Report written by Jenni H

Chris and Jenni met with Jane, Yin, Elaine and Jeremy at Ardler Road allotment to help with maintaining their plot for food4families. It was great to see how much everything had grown since our first visit in March!

There were plenty of jobs to be done; pulling out the mares tail (a nasty weed), watering, planting and harvesting the fruit and veg that was ready.

Between the team we collected a huge bunch of onions, 250g of strawberries (the ones that weren't chomped by the slugs and woodlice!), a handful of gooseberries and a load of rosemary. All of this will be taken to the Weller Centre and New Beginnings to help feed the local community!

We'll be back again soon, as there will always be more jobs to do! Perhaps next time we'll be digging out potatoes or picking beans!

Join us next week for our monthly litter pick when we'll be heading to London Road/South Street

Delivering for Thames Hospice Superstore

Reading Report written by Jenni H

Four goodgymers met in Caversham to help raise awareness of Thames Hospice's Superstore in Richfield Avenue. We were joined by GoodGym superstar Louise for her 900th good deed! What an awesome achievement!

The shop has so many great things - furniture, children's toys, books and loads of lovely pre-loved clothes, and a cafe too!

We set off in pairs to deliver leaflets, managing to distribute 200 in just under 45 minutes, walking 2km and even spotted some cute cats along the way!

For the task next week, we'll be back in Caversham, and will be doing some weeding, watering and maybe some strawberry picking at Ardler Road allotments, supporting Food4families. See you there!

Kennet clean up

Reading Report written by Jenni H

3 GoodGymers went out on a lovely evening, for a stroll down the River Kennet to litter pick.

We were pleasantly surprised by how little we found on the initial stretch of the river, but somehow we still managed to fill 3 bags between us!

Our next task will be on Monday 2nd June, when we'll be supporting the Thames Hospice Superstore. Sign up here

A little less littery and a big milestone!

Reading Report written by Jenni H

On a lovely sunny evening, four GoodGymers set out to clear up some of the litter from Reading's streets.

Armed with pickers and bags, we took a route which led us passed where we had been cheering for the half marathon a few weeks earlier and down by the canal.

Both Jessica and Ganesh got stuck in on their first Monday evening session, and Chris has now reached the mega milestone of 50 good deeds! 🎉

With 3 bags full of litter, helped along by someone neatly leaving theirs on the statue by the Abbey Ruins, we certainly earned our good deeds on this task, and left Reading a little less littery!

Watch this space for the next session!
